9185sc AmperometricOzone Sensor
Features and Benefits
Few Interferences from Oxidants or pH over aWide Measurement RangeBromine, chloramines, chlorine, chlorine dioxide, hydrogenperoxide, and pH do not interfere with ozone measurementsusing the Hach 9185sc Amperometric Ozone Sensor whichcan measure from 0 to 2 mg/L ozone.
Ideal for Low-Conductivity SamplesThe 9185sc ozone system has a low minimum detectionlimit of 0.005 mg/L ozone. Because the amperometric cell isseparated from the sample by the membrane and isimmerged into an electrolytic medium, the 9185sc ozonesensor is suitable for use in water with low conductivity.
Reliable Amperometric MeasurementsThe sensor used the 9185sc system is a two-electrodeamperometric sensor (gold cathode and silver anode) with amembrane selective to ozone. Membranes are pre-mountedon retaining caps to simplify and reduce maintenance time.
Flexible OptionsOptions available for the 9185sc ozone system include:
Acidification Unit—It can be used intermittently orcontinuously for cleaning and is fully programmable.
Intermittent Flow Unit—This fully programmable unit savesresources while limiting excess flow to drain.
Easy Setup and MaintenanceThe all-inclusive 9185sc ozone system comes pre-assembled on a panel. The membrane system of the sensormeans there are no chemicals used for measurement.Maintenance is minimal and two years of typicalmaintenance items are included with the system.
Compatible with Hach Multi-Sensor, Multi-Parameter Digital ControllersThe Hach 9185sc Amperometric Ozone Sensor can beused with any of Hach’s Digital Controllers. The sc digitalcontrollers accept from two to eight sensors. Multiple sccontrollers can be networked to accommodate many moresensors and parameters, reducing the cost per measuringpoint. Just plug in any Hach “plug and play” digital sensorand it’s ready to use without software configuration. “Plugand play” connectivity means there’s no complicated wiringor set up. Network the 9185sc ozone sensor with any ofHach’s digital sensors for measuring dissolved oxygen, turbidity, ORP, conductivity, and many other parameters.
The Hach 9185sc Amperometric Ozone Sensor is free frominterference from oxidants such as bromine, chloramines,
chlorine, chlorine dioxide, and hydrogen peroxide as well as pHand low-conductivity water. This sensor was designed to meetthe specific needs of ozone measurements in drinking waterplants, pure water loops, and the bottled water industry

Principle of OperationOzone is highly soluble in water—up to 13 times more solublethan oxygen. Ozone is also highly unstable in water withstability decreasing with increasing temperature.Ozone reacts with hydroxide ions (OH–). As the concentrationof OH– increases (pH increases), reaction with ozoneincreases. OH– is a by-product of ozone breakdown in waterand the reaction between OH– and O3 can be sustained untilozone is completely removed.O3 is reduced at the gold working electrode (cathode).
O3 + H2O + 2e– O2 + 2OH–
The silver reference electrode (anode) is oxidized into Ag+ ionsthat precipitate with bromide ions.
2Br– + 2Ag 2AgBr + 2e–
The O3 reduction at the cathode generates a current directlyproportional to O3 concentration.
