As a result.. A way of life was established and
defended by the elite class whoprofited greatly from the use ofslaves.
Cotton production broughtprosperity to the state.
Although many South Caroliniansdid not own slaves, slavery becameaccepted by almost all SouthCarolinians as an integral part oflife in the state.
Slavery was defended by themiddle class, who aspired to oneday achieve the status of the elitesand also by lower class whites whofelt some measure of superiority to
the enslaved African Americans. Herndon Productions

During the antebellum period, theconcept of slavery became a topic of
national discussion. Some believed thepractice to be an immoral one. Some felt
it to be and integral part of the
agricultural way of life. Some agreedwith both.
Who would thinkslavery is an integral
part of theagricultural way of
life?

Abolish
A movement to abolishslavery throughout heUnited States began togrow.
Abolitionism was seen bySouth Carolinians as athreat to their way of life.
Abolitionists spoke outagainst slavery in speeches
and newspapers.
South Carolina refused toallow abolitionistnewspapers to be mailed
into the state.
The purpose of the abolitionist movementwas to outlaw slavery throughout theUnited States.
South Carolinians feared that theabolitionist would cause slave revolts anddid not welcome them in the state.
Abolish means: to get rid of something, todo away with it.

South Carolinians who spoke out against slavery wereoften vilified, talked very badly about, and notaccepted by society.
Some abolitionists, such as the Grimke sisters, wereforced to leave SC.
Abolitionists also provided resting places for escapingslaves along the Underground Railroad.

The Underground Railroad was not very effective in SCbecause the state was too far from the border with the Northand even farther from Canada.
Escaped slaves often continued their journey all the way toCanada because they were not safe from recapture in theNorth because most Northerners were not abolitionists.
The abolitionist movement was effective in SC making slaveowners more determined to defend the right to own slaves.

States Rights
The concept of states rights
was an idea that each statehad the right to decidewhether or not to obeynational laws.
This theory of state rightssupported the notion thatonly the SC legislature hadthe right to make decisionsabout slavery, or any other
issue, in the state and thatthe state could defy nationallaws with which it disagreedthus making them null and
void within that state.
John C. Calhoun a senator
from South Carolinasupported the states rights tomake their own laws.

When Lincoln won the electionof 1860, South Carolinians
believed that, despite hisclaims to not end slavery, hewould indeed seek to abolishthe practice of slavery freeingtheir slaves.
As a result, SC decided tosecede from the Union inorder to preserve their culturaland economic way of life.
The secession of SC and theother southern states was anattempt to hold on to the wayof life base upon slavery anddefended their action with the
argument of state rights.
