HEAD COACH: Buddy PoughOliver “Buddy” Pough is entering inhis 18th season as head footballcoach at South Carolina State, hisalma mater. During a 17-year tenureat the school where he earned a bach-elor’s and a master’s, as well as All-MEAC honors as an offensivelineman, Pough has compiled anoverall record of 125-71 and a 99-36MEAC worksheet. His teams havealso captured two MEAC titles (2008& 2009) outright, shared four others(2004, 2010, 2013 and 2014), andmade four trips to the prestigiousFCS playoffs (2008, 2009, 2010 and2013). His overall and conferencerecords at SC State trail only Jeffries,and needs just four (4) more wins tobecome the All-Time WinningestCoach In School History.

SC State had its best turnaroundin 2013 with a 9-4 overall, 7-1MEAC record after suffering theirfirst losing season under Pough at 5-6overall and 4-4 in the MEAC in 2012.In 2011, the Bulldogs compiled a 7-4overall worksheet and were 6-2 in theMEAC. During the 2010 season,Pough’s team finished 9-3 and was 7-1 in the MEAC to tie for the champi-onship after winning the title outrightin both 2009 and 2008. His squadalso earned its third straight berth tothe FCS playoffs and finished the2010 campaign ranked high in all ofthe HBCU and Football Champi-onship Subdivision (FCS) polls.

In 2009, SC State was namedNational Black Champion by theSheridan Broadcasting Network, the100 Percent Wrong Club of Atlanta,

the Washington (DC) Pigskin Cluband the Box-to-Row /BASN. In addi-tion, the Bulldogs finished numberseven in all three major FCS polls –The Sports Network, the FCSCoaches Poll and Any Given Satur-day.

Pough’s 2009 squad finished10-3 overall, captured its second con-secutive MEAC crown with an un-blemished 8-0 record and madeback-to-back appearances in the FCSplayoffs. The Orangeburg nativereaped Coach of the Year honors inthe MEAC -- his second in as manyseasons – and also earned the acco-lade from The (Columbia, SC) Statenewspaper, the Washington PigskinClub, the 100 Percent Wrong Club ofAtlanta and the Orangeburg Touch-down Club.

His 2008 squad was just asimpressive, finishing 10-2 and win-ning the MEAC title with an 8-0

mark, the team’s first outright title in14 seasons, and returning to the FCSplayoffs for the first time since the1982 campaign.

Pough became the 14th head foot-ball coach at South Carolina State,while posting a 7-5 overall record anda 4-4 mark in the MEAC in his inau-gural season in 2002. In 2003, heguided the Bulldogs to an 8-4 overallrecord and a 6-2 mark in MEAC play,losing only to Hampton and Bethune-Cookman.

The 2004 season can be consid-ered another one of the team’s bestunder Pough, as the Bulldogs pro-duced the first-of-two consecutive 9-2seasons. SC State was 6-2 in MEACplay that season, tying the HamptonPirates for the 2004 championship. In2005, Pough’s team duplicated the 9-2 record of the previous year and im-proved to 7-1 in the MEAC, with thelone league loss coming at the handsof eventual champion and nationally-ranked Hampton.

Follow by a couple of 7-4records in 2006 and 2007, the Bull-dogs had 10 win seasons in each ofthe next two campaigns -- 2008 (10-3) and 2009 (10-2). SC State was alsoa perfect 8-0 in the MEAC bothyears.

Pough has coached a numberof players who have gone on to playin the National Football League, in-cluding eight who are currently onNFL rosters – Joe Thomas (DallasCowboys), Raphael Bush (BuffaloBills),Javon Hargrave (PittsburghSteelers), Temarrick Hemingway

(Carolina Panthers), Antonio Hamil-ton (New York Giants), DariusLeonard (Indianapolis Colts), JustinEvans (Cincinnati Bengals) and AlexBrown (San Francisco 49ers).

Prior to taking the reins at SouthCarolina State, Pough spent five sea-sons as an assistant at the UniversityOf South Carolina (USC), the lastthree as a running backs coach underLou Holtz. During his stint at USC,he helped build the Gamecocks intoone of the top offensive teams in theSEC. USC made back-to-back ap-pearances in the Outback Bowl in2000 and 2001. Before going to USC,Pough was one of the top high school

coaches in the Palmetto State, leadingFairfield-Central to a perfect 15-0record in 1996 and claiming the ClassAAA state title. He earned South Car-olina High School League (SCHSL)Coach-of-the-Year honors for his ef-forts, the first of such three honors.Pough also had coaching stints atKeenan High in Columbia, where hebuilt the Raiders into one of the topClass AAA teams in the state.

In his final two seasons (1973 and1974) as a player for SC State, theOrangeburg native and former offen-sive lineman helped the Bulldogs to a15-7-1 record, a league crown andback-to-back postseason appearances

seasons. After graduating in 1975, hejoined the staff at nearby Orangeburg-Wilkinson High (1976-79), before re-turning to his alma mater as anassistant coach in 1979.The Bulldogsmade consecutive trips to the Div. 1-AA playoffs (1981 & 1982) duringhis tenure as an assistant.

Pough and his wife, Josie are theparents of two sons--Oliver “Bud” IVand Lee Judson and a daughter-in-law, Dr. Natalie Odom Pough.

Pough has two granddaughtersTaylor Michelle and Olivia Grace.

Pough is now in his 18th season is now the All-Time Winningest Coach in School History. The current record is held by Bulldog Legend Willie Jeffries with 128.
