operating speed provides sufficient moving-contactvelocity in the Alduti-Rupter Switch interrupters toensure full interrupting capability and long operatinglife.

The operators’ high operating speed also providesadequate closing velocity for 25/34.5-kv and 34.5-kv

Compatibility. This accessory permits use of the switchoperator-along with a second switch operator and anS&C Type AT-2 Source-Transfer Control in Weather-proof Enclosure-to provide automatic source transferfor primary-selective overhead distribution systems.

Shown below in Figure 1 are some of the importantfeatures of Type AS-IA Switch Operators. Thesefeatures are discussed in detail in the “CONSTRUCTIONAND OPERATION” section and apply to Type AS-10Switch Operators as well. Type AS-10 Switch Operators,

fitting arrangement, attached to this output shaft, isused to drive the reciprocating-action vertical operatingpipe. See Figure 2.

The EnclosureThe switch operator is housed in a weatherproof, dustproof enclosure of sturdy, 3/32-inch sheet aluminum. All seams are welded and enclosure openings are sealedwith gasketing or O-rings at all possible water-ingresspoints. A fused space heater is provided to maintainair circulation for condensation control. The spaceheater is factory-connected for 240-volt ac operationbut can be readily field-reconnected for 120-volt acoperation. Access to the interior components is by doorrather than by removal of the entire enclosure-anobvious advantage during foul weather. To ensure theutmost security against unauthorized entry, theenclosure includes such features as:

Cam-action latch . . . seals door in compressionagainst gasket

Two concealed hinges

Laminated safety-plate glass, gasket-mountedobservation window

Padlockable door handle, pushbutton protectivecover, manual operating handle, and selector handle

Key interlock (when specified).

Power TrainThe power train consists essentially of a reversiblemotor coupled to the output shaft. Motor direction iscontrolled by a supervisory switch which actuates theopen or closing contactor as appropriate to energizethe motor and to release the electromagnetic brake.Fingertip precision adjustment of output-shaft rotationis provided on Type AS-1A Switch Operators by meansof self-locking spring-biased cams. (On Type AS-10Switch Operators the cams are permanently set at thefactory and do not require field-adjustment). Antifric-tion bearings are used throughout; the gear-train shaftsfeature tapered roller bearings.

Manual OperationA built-in nonremovable, foldaway manual operatinghandle, for manually opening and closing the Alduti-Rupter Switch, is located on the front of the switch-operator enclosure. See Figure 3. By pulling the latchknob on the hub of the manual operating handle, thehandle can be pivoted from its storage position to thecranking position. As the handle is pivoted forward, the motor brake is mechanically released, both leadsof the control source are automatically disconnected, and both the opening and closing motor contactorsare mechanically blocked in the open position.

If desired, during manual operation, the switchoperator may also be disconnected from the controlsource by removing the motor-circuit two-pole pull-out

fuseholder, located on the right-hand inside wall of theenclosure.

On Type AS-1A Switch Operators, the position of theAlduti-Rupter Switch is shown on an indicator locatedon the output-shaft collar. See Figure 3. The positionof the switch operator is shown on an indicator visiblethrough the observation window. See Figure 4. Themanual operating handle may be disengaged from theswitch-operator mechanism at any position of thehandle and padlocked.

Externally Operable Internal DecouplingMechanismAn integral external selector handle, for operation ofthe built-in internal decoupling mechanism, is locatedon the right-hand side of the switch-operator enclosure.See Figure 3. By swinging this handle upright androtating it clockwise 50° – as shown in Figure 4–theswitch-operator mechanism is decoupled from theoutput shaft. When thus decoupled, the switch operatormay be manually or electrically operated withoutoperating the Alduti-Rupter Switch. Moreover, whendecoupled, the switch-operator output shaft isprevented from moving by a mechanical locking devicewithin the operator enclosure.

During the intermediate segment of the selectorhandle travel, which includes the position at whichactual disengagement (or engagement) of the internaldecoupling mechanism occurs, the motor-circuit sourceleads are momentarily disconnected and (except for12-volt dc models) both the opening and closing motorcontactors are mechanically blocked in the open

position. Visual inspection, through the observationwindow, will verify whether the internal decouplingmechanism is in the coupled or decoupled position.See Figure 4. The selector handle may be padlockedin either position.

Recoupling is foolproof. It is impossible to couple an“open” Alduti-Rupter Switch with the switch operatorin the “closed” position, or vice-versa. Coupling ispossible only if the switch-operator output shaft ismechanically synchronized with the switch-operatormechanism. This synchronization is readily achievedby manually or electrically operating the switchoperator to bring it to the same position (open orclosed) as the Alduti-Rupter Switch. The switch-operator position indicators, seen through the obser-vation window, will show when the approximate openor closed position has been attained. See Figure 4. Then,to move the switch operator to the exact position forcoupling, the manual operating handle is turned untilthe position-indexing drums are numerically aligned.

Travel-Limit AdjustmentOn Type AS-1A Switch Operators, a travel-limit switchcoupled to the motor governs the extent of output-shaft rotation in the opening and closing directions. It includes two contacts that are operated by cam-actuated rollers. See Figure 5.

Opening travel is precisely adjusted by raising andturning the opening-stroke travel-limit cam to therequired position. Similarly, closing travel is adjustedby lowering and turning the closing-stroke travel-limitcam to the required position.

Actuating the opening-stroke travel-limit camde-energizes the opening contactor, which thende-energizes the brake-release solenoid to halt motion

of the mechanism. Actuating the closing-stroke travel-limit cam de-energizes the closing contactor, which thenalso de-energizes the brake-release solenoid to haltmotion of the mechanism.

On Type AS-10 Switch Operators, a travel-limit switchcoupled to the motor is also used to govern the extentof output-shaft rotation in the opening and closingdirections. It too includes two contacts that areoperated by cam-actuated rollers. However, these camsare permanently set at the factory to produce anoutput-shaft rotation of 180 degrees and cannot befield-adjusted. Thus, no travel-limit adjustments arenecessary on Type AS-10 Switch Operators.

Auxiliary SwitchesAn eight-pole auxiliary switch coupled to the motoris furnished as a standard feature. It provides eightindividually adjustable contacts pre-wired to terminalblocks (six contacts are available if the switch operatoris furnished with optional position-indicating lamps,Catalog Number Suffix “-M”). These contacts arefurnished so that external circuits can be establishedto monitor switching operations.

Like the travel-limit cams, each auxiliary switchcontact has a self-locking spring-biased cam whichpermits precise adjustment of cam-roller engagementat the desired point in the operating cycle. Cam positionis adjusted by raising (or lowering) the cam toward

its adjacent spring and rotating it to the desiredposition. See Figure 6. An extra four-pole auxiliaryswitch coupled to the motor and utilizing the sameconstruction is available as an option (Catalog Numbersuffix “-Q”).

An extra auxiliary switch coupled to the Alduti-Rupter Switch is also available as an option, and canbe provided so that external contacts can be establishedto monitor Alduti-Rupter Switch operations. Thisauxiliary switch also utilizes self-locking spring-biasedcams. It can be furnished in an eight-pole version(Catalog Number Suffix “-W”) or in a twelve-pole version(Catalog Number Suffix “-Z”).
