Adaptations

By: Glover Bullock IGIT

Teacher: Introduce the new concept adaptation to students. Understand that there are many standards that SC.5.L.17.1 encompasses (SC.3.L.17.1, SC.4.L.16.2, SC.4.L.16.3, SC.4.L.17.1, SC.4.L.17.4, SC.5.L.15.1). Please see the test specifications for further information. 1

Common Board configurationBenchmark: SC.5.L.17.1 Compare and contrast adaptations displayed by animals and plants that enable them to survive in different environments such as life cycle variations, animal behaviors, and physical characteristics.

Objective: Students will explain, compare, and/or contrast how adaptations displayed by animals or plants enable them to survive in different environments.

Essential Question:What adaptations displayed by animals and plants enable them to survive in different environments such as life cycle variations, animal behaviors, and physical characteristics?

Home Learning:

Teacher: Review the common board configurations with students. Tell students that by the end of the lesson they will be able to answer the essential question. Please fill in the home learning as you deem appropriate.

***Please see Item Bank Specifications p. 89 for further Benchmark Clarifications and Content Limits as well as Science Test Item Specifications p. 71 for additional information. Keep in mind that this is the annually assessed benchmark and the also assessed benchmarks students are responsible for knowing are SC.3.L.17.1, SC.4.L.16.2, SC.4.L.16.3, SC.4.L.17.1, SC.4.L.17.4, and SC.5.L.15.1.

Benchmark Clarifications Students will describe how, when the environment changes, differences between organisms allow some plants and animals to survive and reproduce while others die or move to new locations. Content Limits Items referring to the adaptation of organisms to different environments may address but will not assess the different stages of the organisms life cycle. Items may require knowledge of how animals living in a particular environment are adapted to survive the seasonal changes in that environment. Items will not assess renewable or nonrenewable resources. Stimulus Attribute The term characteristic should be used rather than the term trait.

Cummings, Amanda C. (CAC) - Words need to be angled Structural Adaptations in Animals Adaptation is a special structure or behavior that helps an organism survive in its environment.

All animals have adapted to have special structures that help them survive. These adaptations are ways that the animal can find food, find shelter, survive certain weather conditions, or protect themselves

Catching & Taking in Food

Without food, animals cannot survive. All animals have adapted to have structures that allow them to get food and take that food into their bodies.

Pelicans have enormous, pouched bills that they can expand to scoop fish up out of the ocean or other body of water.

.Giraffes have long necks that allow them to reach high into trees and get food.

MovingMost animals can move from place to place. This allows them to look for food and water and to avoid being eaten by other animals. All animals have special structural adaptations that help them move.

For example, ducks have webbed feet that allow them to be able to swim in the water and catch insects and small fish there.

Cheetahs and kangaroos have powerful legs, which they use for running jumping.

Surviving the WeatherAdaptations also help plants and animals to survive weather conditions in their environment.

For example, polar bears have thickfur and padded paws to helpthem survive the extreme weather of the Arctic.

Walruses have thick layers of blubber that help to keep them warm in cold areas.

Protection from PredatorsAdaptations also help plants and animals to protect themselves. One method of protection is camouflage, which is when the animal's appearance helps it to blend into its environment.

KingsnakeCoralsnakeSome animals protect themselves by mimicking, or looking similar, to other animals. This is called mimicry. One example of mimicry is coral snake that is not poisonous is similar in appearance to a King snake that is poisonous.

Behavioral Adaptations in Animals

Animals have adapted to have behaviors that help them survive in their environments. Defense Against PredatorsMany animals are predators. That means that they hunt and eat other kinds of animals for food. But many predators are also prey, because they are eaten by other kinds of animals

Animals that are prey have behavioral adaptations that help them to survive.

For example, when opossums threatened by a predator, they roll over onto their backs and appear to be dead. Predators usually attack only live animals, so they leave the "dead" opossums alone.

Teacher: Play the video discussing animal adaptations. There is also a quiz at the end that you can use either as guided practice or independent practice.

Structural Adaptations in Plants All plants have special structures that help them survive in their environments.

Leaf AdaptationsSmooth, waxy leaves or stems can help a plant keep water inside during very hot, dry weather

Leaves can be large on plants that live in very dim light. This is so that there is a lot of leaf surface to catch as much sunlight as possible

Root AdaptationsLong roots can help keep a tree or plant from being blown over by the wind. If the roots are close to the surface, they can also help the plant quickly take in water from strong rain. If the roots are deep, they can help a tree or plant reach water buried deep under ground.

Response of Plants to Seasonal ChangesPlants have the ability to go into an inactive state when temperatures go outside the range that the plants need in order to survive. This inactive state is called dormancy. Many plants become dormant during the winter when it is very cold.

Plants that are dormant are alive inside, but might look dead on the outside.

The water hydrilla is a water plant that grows quickly in subtropical environments. Amy bought a water hydrilla plant at a pet store for her aquarium. In a few weeks, the plant outgrew the tank. Amy threw the water hydrilla in the pond behind her house. What will most likely happen in the pond? The water hydrilla will grow but will not affect the other plants in the pond. The water hydrilla will grow and consume resources used by other plants in the pond. The water hydrilla will die.The water hydrilla will grow only if there are no other plants in the pond.

Checks for Understanding

The Arctic rabbit is a small mammal that lives in the coldest areas of North America. In the summer, the rabbit is brown or dark gray. In the winter, it changes color to pure white. How does the ability to change the color of its fur help the Arctic rabbit? It helps it to find water. It helps it to protect its young. It helps it to stay warm.It allows it to hide from predators

Plants compete for many different resources, including sunlight and water. Which of the following adaptations of a plant is most likely to help the plant be successful in competing for water?a broad, deep root systema tall stem or trunkthe ability to produce fruit with seedscolorful flowers

Share and WriteAccountable Talk

Have students turn and talk and answer the question What is rigor?Have teachers to chart it. They will come back to it later and revamp based on training module.21
