    Important Notice: Variety Use Agreement

The Canadian seed industry has been exploring means of increasing returns to plant breeders and has determined the most viable model to be collection of royalties on farm-saved seed through a "Variety Use Agreement" (VUA). SeCan is joining several other Canadian seed distributors to implement a pilot project launching an industry-wide VUA platform. This project

  • will encompass a cross-section of varieties, crop types, breeding programs, and distributors in each of the next two years. The start of the VUA pilot is an important step to ensure the long term sustainability of plant breeding in Canada.

Several new varieties may be subject to this VUA provision, including SC4317N.

Neither the royalty structure or rate has been determined at this time, but if applicable will be communicated to members prior to first commercial sale. SeCan is committed to keeping members informed of any changes as soon as they occur.

Please contact your SeCan marketing representative or visit seedvaluecreation.ca for more information.
