SCADAvantage core systems offer fullfeatured performance

ABB has been a global supplier ofautomation to the oil and gas industry

for decades. ABB knows that the oiland gas markets are demanding, andwere dedicated to offering solutions thatmeet our customers needs. Uniquelydesigned for challenging oil and gasoperations, ABBs SCADAvantagewas conceived for a dynamic industrythat requires safe and reliable control ofdistributed assets, as well as a

    bi-directional interface with corporatesystems.

A Powerful coreSCADAvantage is built on a reliable, high performance, relational database that is ten times faster than typical SQL

databases and is truly unique in the market. Traditional SCADA systems depend upon memory linked lists.SCADAvantage uses a real-time relational DatabaseManagement System, referential integrity and active queriesto enhance data retrieval, data integrity and the speed of dataupdates. Even with all these capabilities, SCADAvantageconsumes less computer memory than traditional systems.

The Database Management Syst em combines standard SQLtechnology with powerful features that improve memoryefficiency, performance, data quality and connectivity toexternal corporate relational databases.Data consistency is enforced t hrough referential integrity.

An easi ly configurable polling engine makes data acquisitionsmooth on low speed networks or over noisy communicationlines. Data polled from remote devices is collected andstored in an embedded historian included in the base licensepackage.Redundancy and database updates by exception providesuperior performance and reliability.Performance is crucial in todays control room environment;SCADAvantage 64bit operating system support removesthe memory limitation of 32 bit operating systems. Inaddition, SCADAvantage speeds up data interchange bylowering data transfer between servers and clients through

a unique feature called active queries. The servers pushengine updates the clients only when values have changedwhich significantly reduces network traffic. Last but not leastSCADAvantage is the most cost effective high end SCADAin the market, characterized by simple, low cost maintenance.

Features are always safe, robust andreliable, under SCADAvantage control

ReplicationScalability is a SCADA system key requirement of oil andgas companies in order to cope with very large areas.SCADAvantage supports distribution thoroughly through itsreplication engine.Live data, databases and operator interface configurationsare replicated to other servers in real time. Transfer isbidirectional and commands as well as set points can beissued at the local facility or remotely at the regional center, with appropriate interlocking if required (e.g. after hours).Supervision and consolidation of local and regional data

provide extensive flexibility in system deployment andmaintenance.Replication occurs in two models:

    - Hierarchical (local, regional and corporate levels)- Peer-to-peer (offsite backup control center for immediate

disaster recovery)Replication allows automatic configuration to be:

    - Centralized (remote non-intrusive)- De-centralized (local to the server)- Both

    Online Disaster Recovery

SCADAvantage supports an on-line Disaster Recoveryserver that allows backing up the system automatically in real-time. The Disaster Recovery server can be part of the systemupgrade to offer seamless upgrades with no downtime forcritical operations that require permanent control.Disaster Recovery main features are:- Complete binary copy of Real-Time Relational Database

(RTRDB) and Log Files. Copy can be sent to up to 3machines

    - Up to triple redundancy available also for system upgradeswith no downtime

    - Journal transactions enable fast failover

Business object templatesPre-engineered templates allow the user to create multipleinstances of objects in the system with the push of a button.Specific templates permit the creation of:

    - RTUs and PLCs- Flow measurement devices (for liquids and gas)- Pump-off controllers for rod pumps- VSDs for PCP and ESP pumps- Pumping and compressor stations- Flow stations

The enhanced flex ibil ity required by o il and gas SCADA in

order to meet the changing needs of the field is a primeconsideration and the result is a remarkable simplification ofsystem maintenance.

SecuritySecurity is offered through a fully configurable authoritysystem that prevents unauthorized persons from gaining

access and activating commands. The multi-level securitysystem conforms to any corporate standard criteria andmaintains the history of each users access to objectsattributes, data, displays, production areas and controls.SCADAvantage can be implemented on any security level. From the simple schema of firewall protection to the mostsophisticated architecture in the market according to thecustomers requirements:

    - Re-routing of alarms for unattended areas- Zones and zone groups access control- Encryption and VPN support- Inactivity logout

    - Active directory support for centralized security with apassword policy featuring:

    - Strong passwords- Automatic password expiration- Password re-use- Account lockout on repeat violations- Password length- Login auditing

In active drilling areas, customers are drilling 20- 30wells per month. SCADAvantage automates andsimplifies addition of wells to the system for significantlifecycle cost savings.

    SCADAvantage adapts to industrydemands

RedundancyUp to triple real-time server redundancy allows the systemto run with an active/standby configuration. Of courseredundancy is also supported for communications (network, serial, satellite, radio, leased lines, GPRS, etc.) and throughthe levels of replication. Unlike many competitors systems(which monitor hardware only), SCADAvantage fullymonitors both hardware and software operations to provideadvanced protection against failure.

Enterprise Systems InterfaceSCADAvantage supports open and real-time internationalstandards of connectivity such as: ODBC, OLEDB, OPCDA, AE and HDA. These same standards are supported bymost of corporate databases and systems such as SAP,Pi, PVR, FieldView, Maximo and Schlumberger Epinet. Thiscommonality lets external relational databases communicatewith SCADAvantage real-time database, allowing remoteprocedure calls for easy bi-directional data transfer meetingany connectivity standard.

A direct interface to Flow-Cal software for edit ing andanalyzing measurement data is available as an add-onapplication.

ReportsSCADAvantage provides comprehensive data reporting toproduction, operations, maintenance, engineering, accountingand management.Database system and communication function logs areavailable. Reports are provided through Active Reports:an integrated up-to-the-minute package, one of the leadingreporting systems in the market.

Historical dataSCADAvantage has two types of historians. The first

historian is based on internal logs for polled real-time dataand calculated points. As part of the core system, thishistorian does not require a separate license. The databaseconsists of raw, hourly and daily values, limited only by thesize of the disk. This data is used to supply trend valuesand also supports automatic archiving and de-archiving.

The second historian, based on Microsoft SQL, is calledProduction Data History. This historian holds regulatory data, such as gas measurement data in compliance with API 21.1and ERCB Directive 17. With this historian, production datacan be uploaded daily.

    Upstream applicationsFull-featured daily production package

Production Data History (PDH)Daily production reporting is at the heartof upstream production operations.

In upstream, Production Data History (PDH) provides fullyregulatory compliant daily production reporting. PDH is basedon Microsoft SQL server, using an object-oriented model t hatgives users the flexibility to add or modify entities.

Data and configuration are date sensitive, allowing quick

reconfiguration and accurate reporting even when changesoccur in the middle of t he reporting period.

Unlike other databases, PDH also stores relationshipsbetween entities, including:

    - Facilities, wells, meters, etc.- Operating areas, business units, operator runs, gathering

systems- Product Ownership interest (working interest) records

The entity relat ionships in SCADAvantage help operatorsunderstand the particular equipment and system design of a

location or facility. By understanding this layout, operators cantroubleshoot issues more effectively and validate the accuracyof measurement data.

A comprehensive audi t t rail is available for:- Entities (meters, wells, etc.)- Gas composition and meter parameters- Measured values- Edits

PDH meets the requirements of API, government regulationsand joint venture partners for maintaining the history of

metered, tested, flared and injected volumes.

Upstream applicationsBringing operational efficiency to well test

Automated well test applicationWhen well production is measured at a

group meter rather than at the individualwells, such wells must be testedat intervals. This is needed to meetgovernment regulations, partnershipagreements or to determine theprotability of each well.

Each well is flowed through a test separation facility for aspecified period that typically includes a purge time plus up to24 hours of stable test time. The test results are used to pro-rate monthly production from the group measurement pointback to individual wells and to determine production from aformation or pool.

An automatic well t est algorithm, running in a ProgrammableLogic Controller (PLC) located at the satellite facility, automates well testing steps.

The PLC allows a choice of three well test methods that differaccording to level of automation:

    - Semi-automatic valve changes requiring manualintervention.

    - Fully automatic valve changes put new wells on test usingan ordered list configured in the PLC.

    - Statistical well testing which controls valve changes basedon a calculated appropriate purge time plus a designatedstable flow time.

All test data is stored for viewing in the Production DataHistory database of SCADAvantage.

Any authorized user can accept or reject a completedwell test. Both accepted and rejected values remain in thedatabase. The application allows users to filter which well iscurrently being tested and to review results by specifying adevice or a unique well identifier or a range of dates.

A user can view or edit automatic well test information for aspecified time range and for one or more wells. The integralaudit trail and security functions ensure any change to awell test value is accompanied with the reason for change. In some circumstances, certain test values are derived bycalculation rather than measurement. In these cases, if anedit is performed, the well test history editor automatically

    recalculates the derived values.

Well test results can be used to quickly and accuratelyallocate the volumemeasured at a group meter to the associated wells.SCADAvantage can automatically calculate the monthlyproduction on a well-by-well basis to meet contractrequirements and government regulations.

    Upstream applications Artificial lift optimization

Rod pump optimizationProduction engineers are constantly

looking for ways to optimize pump jackson oil wells with minimum site travel. A dynocard is an important analysistool for measuring down hole pumpefciency. A series of measurementsfrom the load cell and position indicatorover each full pumping cycle arerecorded by a pump off controllerinstalled at the well.

The SCADAvantage Pump-Off Control (POC) applicationassists operations personnel to:

    - Quickly monitor remote wells

    - Focus on problem wells- Reduce driving time- Reduce damage to well head equipment- Detect abnormalities- Reduce power consumption- Plan and extend maintenance cycles

The SCADAvantage Pump-Off Control (POC) applicationinterfaces to the most popular pump off controllers. Theapplication reads and graphically displays the results of themeasurements as a dynocard. This plot or graph represents afull pumping cycle by displaying measurements of rod position

on the X-axis and rod load on the Y-axis.

By using external applications, the downhole card can becalculated or uploaded, if the controller supports it.

    Gathering and processing applicationsCompressor Optimization

Reciprocating Compressor EfciencyapplicationProduction and sales of upstream oiland gas depend greatly on availablecompressor capacity. Accuratelymonitored and optimized compressorsare important in alleviating productionbottlenecks.

The Compressor Effic iency applications can be developedto provide a diagrammatic view of reciprocating compressorefficiency. The diagram can be for a single compressor,or several parallel compressors. Various compressorcharacteristics are displayed including current net flow, maximum capacity and potential maximum capacity thatmight be expected from the compressor(s).

Engineers use these diagrams to quickly assess acompressors production capacity and determine what pocketsettings or speed changes could optimize production.Zooming to any diagram section reveals additional details. In the case of a parallel compressor efficiency diagram, acomposite capacity curve is calculated and displayed.

Current operating conditions, maximum speed conditions andthe ultimate maximum curves for all contributing compressorsare displayed. If a compressor shuts down, the applicationautomatically re-calculates a composite curve for theremaining compressors.

Midstream and distribution applications A solid foundation for pipeline operators

Efcient pipeline management isthe basis for improving throughput

and information management.SCADAvantage provides internal andexternal applications that are integratedwith the real-time system to facilitatethe collection, management, processingand (optionally) validation of gas owmeasurements from a variety of datasources.SCADAvantage meets the information

needs of gas transmission, distributionand production systems.

In many cases the distance to pumping or compressorstations and to isolation valves requires local control andbuffering of data to cope with possible communicationinterruption. With other systems interruptions may cause datacorruption or data loss. SCADAvantage uses configurabledata integrity checks and local data storage to ensure dataquality and prevent data loss.

Pipeline scalabilitySCADAvantage can be deployed as a local HMI,monitoring and controlling block valves as well as pumping or

    compressor stations.

All stat ions and va lves can be automatically consolida ted intoa control room system using replication. The control roomtypically runs the operational and commercial applicationsthat result in efficient pipeline management.Back up control rooms are easily configured using peer-to-peer replication, which keeps them synchronized with themain control room.

Since SCADAvantage supports all standards of connectivity, customers have the freedom to choose ABB or any third-party

application that supports such standards as OPC, OLEDBor ODBC in real-time. This becomes especially important forsystem replacement when a pipeline company already hasworking applications in place.

On major gas pipelines, customers are addingapproximately 2-3 metering stations per week.

ABBs competi tors typically take 2-3 days tointegrate a metering station into their system. UsingSCADAvantage, this task can be completed in 2-3hours, contributing to significant lifecycle cost savings.

Linepack Linepack calculations are performed by the system tomaintain an estimated inventory quantity. The system also

tracks current pack and change in pack at hourly and dailyintervals. Linepack calculation results are processed by thesystem against customer-definable parameters, allowingoperations personnel to define alert levels. Graphicalinterfaces show Linepack changes over time in the form oftrends and colored pipeline segments.

Schedule trackingGas schedule tracking calculations are performed periodicallyto establish the forecast end-of-day (EOD) contract quantity

and the required flow rate to meet the quantity required byeach contract.

The forecast EOD cont ract quantity ca lculation uses real- timeinput analog points to specify t he accumulated volume andcurrent daily flow rate for the current gas day at a particularreceipt or delivery point in a pipeline network. It thenextrapolates the anticipated total volume or energy.

The state delay feature in alarms reduces nuisance alarms and keeps controllersfrom being inundated. Gas schedule tracking prevents missed nominationsbecause of auto-correct where it estimates missing data until communications arerestored.Large Natural Gas LDC Utility
