Young Explorer ProgramKids of all ages love our Young Explorer program, where they’re grouped with trav-elers their own age for fun and educational activities while adults attend lectures. They’ll enjoy thought-provoking discussions and mind-bending games that fuel creativity, all while building new friendships. Our Young Explorer leaders are all recent Stanford grads and former Stanford Sierra Camp counselors and are pros at understanding and adapting to the personalities and inter-ests of each young explorer—which means that everyone has a great time.

Faculty LeaderCaroline Winterer has been a professor in Stanford’s department of history since 2004, where she studies the exchange of ideas between Europe and America. She was director of the Stanford Humanities Center from 2013 to 2019. Raised in Europe and the U.S., she’s a native speaker of both English and French. She has authored or co-authored five books, won many awards for teaching and research, taught in the Bing Overseas Studies Program in Paris and frequently lectures for the Stanford Alumni Association.

On this program, she will discuss the ancient people and cultures of Scandinavia, including the Vikings, the Bog people and the Sámi people. She will also lecture on modern Scandinavian-related topics, including considering Lego as a utopian toy and why “Scandinavian modern” design took the world by storm (think Ikea).

“Scandinavia is rich in history while also being

at the cutting edge of modern trends (who hasn’t heard of hygge by now?)—there’s really something

for everyone, whether you’re a child or an adult.”

The Stanford Differencefor Young ExplorersYou’re taking your family on the trip of a lifetime and, of course, you want to be right beside your kids to witness their wonder and amazement. Rest assured you’ll spend most of the trip together as a family. On occasion, kids-only adventures, tours and meals allow the adults time for more in-depth touring and discussions. Our professional tour manager and team of Young Explorer leaders (at least one for every 10 kids) join you every step of the way to make your family trip a breeze.

Dedicated Young Explorer leadersOur savvy Young Explorer leaders are razor-sharp recent Stanford grads and former Stanford Sierra Camp counselors. They’ll captivate the children with hands-on educational activities while the adults attend lectures. And they bring the whole family together for activities such as Family Olympics, Trivia Night or Disco Bingo.

Access to Stanford scholars Have a child or grandchild who is keenly interested in the faculty leader’s area of expertise? He or she is welcome to attend the lectures with you. On most trips, our faculty leaders design and deliver a lecture specifically for young explorers.

Daily excursions involve one to two miles of walking, and cover a variety of terrain, from modern museums to uneven, cobblestoned streets, as well as both concrete and packed dirt paths through parks and historic sites. Tours may involve one to three flights of stairs. Many sites and buildings don’t have elevators and do not allow buses to pull up in front, thus requiring a walk of several minutes, sometimes uphill, to reach the entrance. Our journey requires travel by motor coach. Most drives are 30 to 60 minutes, with a couple drives of 90 minutes. A variety of boat transportation will be used, from small speedboats and canal boats in Stockholm and Copen-hagen to the replica Viking boats we’ll row ourselves at Roskilde and the large overnight ferry from Copenhagen to Oslo. With the exception of the overnight ferry, the boat journeys are typically one hour or less in duration. Come prepared for potentially hot weather. Although all of the hotels and motor coaches used in this program are air-conditioned, some of the museums and other sites we visit are not. Participants must be physically fit, active and in good health. We welcome travelers 6 years of age and older on this program.
