What is Partition ? In personal computers, a partition is a

logical division of a hard disk created so that you can have different operating systems on the same hard disk or to create the appearance of having separate hard drives for file management, multiple users, or other purposes.

How to partitions your HDD ?

• Open the Disk Management tool by selecting Control Panel> Administrative Tools >Computer Management

• Click Disk Management>and you should see a list of your existing drives and partitions (if applicable). To create a new partition, choose a disk that has free storage space, right-click it, and select Shrink Volume. Bear in mind that you can safely shrink only basic disks and set it to format with the NTFS file system.

• Type in the amount of space you want to shrink the disk by. The number you choose depends on what you want to use the other partition for.

Formatting HDD

Page 7: Scan,format,partition hdd,defragmentation

Format actually means to prepare a storage medium, usually a hard drive, for reading and writing. When you format hard drive, the operating system erases all bookkeeping information on the disk, tests the disk to make sure all sectors are reliable, marks bad sectors, and creates internal address tables that it later uses to locate information.

Scanning a virus scan is a program which will go through the memory and every file on your computer and scan the contents to identify malicious code. This often can detect virus’s which have manifested themselves into existing files on your computer or viruses’ which have been downloaded and are housed within their own files. Viruses tend to attach themselves to or hide within other programs and program executables and this is what a Virus Scan looks for.

DefragmentDefragmentation is like cleaning house for your PC, it picks up all of the pieces of data that are spread across your hard drive and puts them back together again. Why is defragmentation important? Because every computer suffers from the constant growth of fragmentation and if you don’t clean house, your PC suffers.

Page 14: Scan,format,partition hdd,defragmentation

Disk fragmentation occurs when a file is broken up into pieces to fit on the disk. Because files are constantly being written, deleted and resized, fragmentation is a natural occurrence. When a file is spread out over several locations, it takes longer to read and write. But the effects of fragmentation are far more widespread: Slow PC performance, long boot-times, random crashes and freeze-ups – even a complete inability to boot up at all. Many users blame these problems on the operating system or simply think their computer is “old”, when hard disk fragmentation is most often the real culprit.

•It can defragment only local volumes.•It can defragment only one volume at a time.•It cannot defragment one volume while it is scanning another.•It cannot be scheduled. If you need to schedule disk defragmentation, use the Defrag.exe command line tool. For additional information about using the command line Defrag.exe tool,
