The Scarlet Letter Final Project: BINGO
Directions: You must choose one project under each letter category so that you spell out B-I-N-G-O. Each letter provides a “Free Space” however only one “Free Space” can be used. Therefore, you must complete a minimum of four projects. If you choose however, not to use a “Free Space” you will receive 20 points extra credit on your project. Each Project is worth 50 points; thus the project is worth a total of 200 points. You will have the opportunity to work on these in class; however, if the time is not used wisely you will be asked to complete these at home. This assignment will be due at the beginning of class on Finals. As a major project, no component can be turned in late, including absence. With your projects you must complete a cover sheet with a MLA header that lists each project you completed, and if you chose a group project list who was in you your group. All projects should be turned-in in a pocket folder with the cover letter in front, with the exception to group projects and/or projects that may not fit (e.g. painting, 3D map, Graphic novel, etc). Projects that are haphazardly thrown together will have points deducted. Additionally, all writing projects must also be turned in on turnitin.com as one document titled final project. If any writing portion is not submitted that portion will receive “0”.

Create a detailed guide one would
use to tour Governor
Bellingham’s mansion,based on
Hawthorne’s vivid descriptions.
Create a eulogy for Arthur
Dimmesdale. Refer to scenes where he
appears in the book
to gather your prewriting ideas.
Imagine you could interview his
surviving acquaintancesfrom the novel;
what would they tell you about him?
Decide on a tone and make sure you
don’t merely list facts. Break up
your serious information with
some light-hearted thoughts. Use
precise language, sensory details,
action verbs, active voice. 300 word minimum, typed double spaced.
This task requires your group to
write, shoot, direct, and edit a video of
one of the scenes in the novel. This may be an exact copy of
a scene, a modernized
version of a scene, or a parody of one of the main scenes
in thenovel. Your scene
should be carefully scripted and edited – and costumes are a must! It needs to be 3-5 minutes in
length and PG. Students must turn
in a typed script with video. Videos
must be burned onto a dvd,
emailed, or posted on youtube and
provide me with a link. (no more than
6 in a group)
Create an elaborate book jacket for the
novel using as many of the
symbols fromthe story as
possible (minimum of 3) The book jacket will also
include a summary of the book in your
own words. Symbols include the scarlet letter
“A”, the colorblack, the forest,
the brook, the roses, Indians,
Hester’s clothing (particularly her
formal cap), Pearl’s clothing, Pearl’s
name, the meteor, the gold
embroidery of the “A”.
For this option you will write letters
back and forth between Hester and Dimmesdale
that may have been written throughout
the time of the novel. What would
they say to each other? Your letters should be accurate to the time period. You must write at least 6 letters (3
from each character) and
each letter should be about a page in
length.
I“Free Space”
One of Hawthorne’s main ideas in The Scarlet Letter is the nature of sin. As readers we are presented
with different characters who
have all committed various sins:
Hester, Arthur Dimmesdale, Roger Chillingworth, and
Puritan Society. Using the text as
evidence, compose a multi-paragraph essay where you
make your case for which character committed the
worst sin. Specific passages from Hawthorne’s narration and
dialogue will be necessary for

a graphic novel-version of 3 scenes from the novel. The
scenes shouldrelate in some way and include most of
the main characters. The
pictures should be neat, detailed, and

in-text citations for specific references. Must be minimum 500 words, typed, and MLA format.

following ideas: How would an adult Pearl feel

characters in her life: her mother, her father, Roger
Chillingworth, and the Puritan
community? What kind of
influence did her

Be sure your choices have a
basis in the story (aka be sure you can back up your
claims!) Your profile page should be presented in a way that can be hung up in Mrs. Wallin’s room.

changes in the character’s
acceptance in the community, the physical and/or
mental condition of your character, and
his/her relationship with
the other characters.
The main characters who will
appear in your journal will be Hester Prynne,
Pearl, Rev. Arthur Dimmesdale, and
Roger Chillingworth. You may choose any of
these as your “journal writer,”
but all of them will appear in your
journal. Each entry must incorporate at least one brief passage from the
novel. Your character may have
said it, may have heard it, or may
simply be responding to
something spoken by another
character or the narrator.
The focus for each entry should be on reaction to events,
characters, and situations;
summary should be kept to a minimum.

day talk show, as a group create a pre-recorded talk show where students portraying the main characters of The Scarlet Letter come together for either joint or individual interviews to be conducted by another student playing the role of talk show host. The host should be sure to ask questions that will draw out the major plot points of the novel. The characters should dress in costume and use props as necessary. Talk show should be a minimum of 4-5 minutes, PG, and should include one commercial interruption. Students must turn in a typed script with video. Videos must be burned onto a dvd, emailed, or posted on youtube and provide me with a link. (no more than 6 in a group).
