B“Free Space”

Create a detailed guide one would

use to tour Governor

Bellingham’s mansion,based on

Hawthorne’s vivid descriptions.

Create a eulogy for Arthur

Dimmesdale. Refer to scenes where he

appears in the book

to gather your prewriting ideas.

Imagine you could interview his

surviving acquaintancesfrom the novel;

what would they tell you about him?

Decide on a tone and make sure you

don’t merely list facts. Break up

your serious information with

some light-hearted thoughts. Use

precise language, sensory details,

action verbs, active voice. 300 word minimum, typed double spaced.

This task requires your group to

write, shoot, direct, and edit a video of

one of the scenes in the novel. This may be an exact copy of

a scene, a modernized

version of a scene, or a parody of one of the main scenes

in thenovel. Your scene

should be carefully scripted and edited – and costumes are a must! It needs to be 3-5 minutes in

length and PG. Students must turn

in a typed script with video. Videos

must be burned onto a dvd,

emailed, or posted on youtube and

provide me with a link. (no more than

6 in a group)

Create an elaborate book jacket for the

novel using as many of the

symbols fromthe story as

possible (minimum of 3) The book jacket will also

include a summary of the book in your

own words. Symbols include the scarlet letter

“A”, the colorblack, the forest,

the brook, the roses, Indians,

Hester’s clothing (particularly her

formal cap), Pearl’s clothing, Pearl’s

name, the meteor, the gold

embroidery of the “A”.

For this option you will write letters

back and forth between Hester and Dimmesdale

that may have been written throughout

the time of the novel. What would

they say to each other? Your letters should be accurate to the time period. You must write at least 6 letters (3

from each character) and

each letter should be about a page in

length.

I“Free Space”

One of Hawthorne’s main ideas in The Scarlet Letter is the nature of sin. As readers we are presented

with different characters who

have all committed various sins:

Hester, Arthur Dimmesdale, Roger Chillingworth, and

Puritan Society. Using the text as

evidence, compose a multi-paragraph essay where you

make your case for which character committed the

worst sin. Specific passages from Hawthorne’s narration and

dialogue will be necessary for

Your group’s task will be to complete

a graphic novel-version of 3 scenes from the novel. The

scenes shouldrelate in some way and include most of

the main characters. The

pictures should be neat, detailed, and

presentthe reader with a

clear understanding of

what is happening. Each of the 3 “pages” of the

novel must include at

least 6 pictures. You may take the dialogue from the novel or you may write your own

updated dialogue

successful completion of this

option. You will need to weigh the sins committed by your choice against other nominees as

part of your discussion.

Conclude by discussing whether or not your choice is consistent with

Hawthorne’s. Hawthorne’s

narrator does draw a conclusion on the

issue, and makes specific comments

about who deserves pardon

and who deserves punishment. Use

in-text citations for specific references. Must be minimum 500 words, typed, and MLA format.

Also must conform to formal writing conventions. See

me for more specific details.

(no more than 6 in a group).

Write four poems. In one poem, select

a theme from the novel and

personify it inthe poem (showing me you understand the meaning of the theme) The other

threepoems are bio

poems (one poem for each three main characters) These

are seriouspoems and your grade will reflect

your understanding of the depth of each

character.See me for a more detailed handout.

Draw or build a map (one or three

dimensional) of the colony of Salem

and surrounding areas. Be sure to

include both natural and manmade landmarks

important to the story.

As a group, create an alphabet book with each letter of

the alphabet having its own page. It may be

rhyming or non-rhyming. Each letter will be

associated with the novel in some way.

Giveyour book a cover

and illustrate it. Your booklet

should demonstrate that

you have anunderstanding of the major events

and themes of the novel as well as

relationships between

the characters.Be sure to

Write a different ending. Typed, 300

word minimum.

represent themes, symbols , tone, and

other literary devices utilized in

the novel (EXAMPLES: A is

for the letter Hester wears upon

her bosom as a punishment

for adultery. F is for framed

narrative in which the Custom House

Introduction utilizes in order to

create a story within a story.) Alphabet books

should resemble a children’s alphabet

books where the letter is larger than

the rest of the sentence and is

creatively presented. (Groups should be no more

than 5)For this option you

will create (on paper –not on the

website!) a facebook profile for

each of the four main

characters in the novel. This profile must be detailed and show your

understanding of the novel. You must

include their names and some “about me” info

that sounds like the particular

character would have written it.

You may use your best judgment as to

what else to include. The

purpose is to adapt these characters to

a 21st century understanding –

what kind of music would they listen to? What would

Based on Hawthorne’s vivid descriptions, paint or draw a detailed

scene from TheScarlet Letter and explain in a type-written document

(50-100 words) why you chose that

particular scene.

Create a journal/diary for one of the three

main characters. In that character’s

voice (first person), you will create at least eight dated entries based on

what’s happening at the time. This will allow you to comment on the

major events of the plot. You MUST comment on the

following:The first

appearance of the character in the

story Any meeting that your character has with another of the

characters Any important

event that occurs in the story

Any physical/psychological changes in the

Using the clues given throughout

the text, especially those in chapter

24, write the story of Pearl’s life. Write

her story in first person as if you

were Pearl reflecting on the

events of her childhood and

what has happened to her since. Consider the

following ideas: How would an adult Pearl feel

about the events of her youth?

How would she feel about the main

characters in her life: her mother, her father, Roger

Chillingworth, and the Puritan

community? What kind of

influence did her

they read? What would they watch?

Be sure your choices have a

basis in the story (aka be sure you can back up your

claims!) Your profile page should be presented in a way that can be hung up in Mrs. Wallin’s room.

characterWhere the

character leaves the story

The story covers seven years in the character’s life so you will observe

changes in the character’s

acceptance in the community, the physical and/or

mental condition of your character, and

his/her relationship with

the other characters.

The main characters who will

appear in your journal will be Hester Prynne,

Pearl, Rev. Arthur Dimmesdale, and

Roger Chillingworth. You may choose any of

these as your “journal writer,”

but all of them will appear in your

journal. Each entry must incorporate at least one brief passage from the

novel. Your character may have

said it, may have heard it, or may

simply be responding to

something spoken by another

character or the narrator.

The focus for each entry should be on reaction to events,

characters, and situations;

summary should be kept to a minimum.

What kind of person has she

turned out to be? Where does she

live?

What do we know about her family

now? What kind of

contact did/does she have with her

mother?

Your ideas must refer to specific

events in the novel and discuss their

significance to Pearl. The adult

Pearl must show an understanding of major characters and their actions

and motivations in the novel, major

events in the plot, the influence of the

setting on the characters in the

novel, and at least one key theme.

Your interpretation of Pearl’s point of

view must be consistent with the details of the novel

and the time period.
