LETTER FROM OUR BOARD CHAIR

Everything changes and nothing stands still.

-Heraclitus

As I wrap up a year-and-a-half as Chair of the Sister Carmen Board of Directors, I remain awed by the accomplishments of this organization. Now in our third year as the official Family Resource Center for our area, we not only provide life essentials, but innovative family—and health—centered programming that strengthens families and, ultimately, our community. Our holistic strengths-based advocacy empowers individuals and families and encourages self-directed planning and solutions during a time of crisis. While our participants face many obstacles, they show that, with support, they can take charge of their lives and thrive.

My time with Sister Carmen has seen a lot of change, not just for the organization, but in the everyday lives of those around us. New economies, changing employment structures, divergent wage growth and stagnation, rising housing costs—the exact numbers may be a matter of debate, but what is clear is that we are experiencing profound uncertainty in the post-recession world, and many of our friends and neighbors are now struggling, every day, at the margins. It has been a remarkable experience to see the compassionate response of our community to these challenges. I have witnessed firsthand how we can unite together and demonstrate resilience, determination, and a shared sense of purpose as we work together to address the critical needs of those who are low-income and struggling in our area. As we move forward in 2015 and beyond, I am proud of what Sister Carmen has accomplished in 2014 and excited about the future. As you read through this report you will see the positive impact of our services last year. Our community—staff, volunteers, supporters, and friends—is strong and vibrant, and has enabled us to be a trusted lifeline for the most vulnerable among us. And that will never change.

INDIVIDUAL & FAMILY ADVOCACY connects participants to comprehensive and

coordinated services to develop a focused, self-directed

plan to regain self-sufficiency. Advocates encourage

and provide resources to increase knowledge on

financial planning, budgeting, parenting, job

coaching, resume assistance,

and help enrolling in public benefits.

THRIVE

A major barrier to overcoming poverty is the ability to earn a livable wage. SCCC provides job coaching, career counseling, resume help and interview preparation assistance to participants as they take steps toward employment. Our program utilizes tools to help participants prepare to successfully return to work, go to work for the first time, and increase wages.

SCCC is now partnering with Flatirons Community Church in a program called THRIVE – Transformation at Work. The goal of this program is to help individuals overcome barriers to advancement in their jobs, or to develop a career path leading to economic self-sufficiency.

SCCC referred seven participants to THRIVE who are currently enrolled at Front Range Community College in certification courses that upon graduation will help lead them to a living wage position. The certificate programs are in pharmacy technician, automotive technology, and paralegal studies. These areas of study have been identified as some of the more likely occupational areas in which a living wage could be earned by graduates.

In addition to our partnership with Flatirons Community Church, SCCC is seeking funding to develop a formal Job Skills and Training program. Once funding is secured, we will offer job training/certificate programs for certain qualified participants. After successfully completing the program, a participant’s earning potential will likely increase to a livable wage, thus promoting economic stability and long term self-sufficiency.

to assisting in the office with

administrative work. They are the

heart and soul that keep our doors

open every day.

Our thrift store is one of the cornerstones for

funding our programs. Last year, $216,150 in

revenue from the store supported SCCC

programming. In addition, the store provided

$17,933 of free essential items to participants in a

time of crisis. With strong community support the

Thrift Store diverted 455,400 lbs. of unwanted

items from the landfill.
