Staff Submission Christine Poeckes’ granddaughter, Kaia, is the Honorary Youth Ambassador for Race for Hope this year. She will be in the 6th grade at East Middle this year. Her role is to spread the word about the importance of exercise for youth. Attached is an article she wrote for a local running newsletter.

Race for Hope By: Kaia Downs

Hello, my name is Kaia Downs. I am 11 years old and I come from a running family. I ran my very first race when I was 13 months old. I am the Honorary Youth Ambassador for the Race for Hope, and my role is to get other kids to join the race and teach about the importance of running.

First of all, running helps keep kids out of trouble. When kids run they have something to do with their free time, instead of things like drugs. Also in running, there are many great role models to look up to. It teaches kids motivation and focus to accomplish healthy goals. It gives kids a place to fit in instead of places they could get in trouble, like gangs.

Second, running benefits all other sports! In basketball you run, in football you run, and in baseball you run. If you are not that great of a runner in the sport you play, RUNNING HELPS THAT! Everyone can run no matter what their size is. If you need to start out walking you're still moving. You don't have to be fast or go long distances, you just have to move.

Finally, running makes everyone healthier. The Center for Disease Control says over one third of American children and teenagers are obese. They have higher chances of high blood pressure, prediabetes, bone and joint problems, and feel bad about themselves. Running uses almost all of your body parts. It is also just a good thing to do if you want to lose weight. Running is a good and beneficial thing to do.

Please join me, my family, and my friends in the Race for Hope on September 19 at Adams Nature Preserve. I would be honored to have you show support for youth running by joining my team at www.siouxlandraceforhope.com or forming your own team to support someone fighting cancer.

My team name is: Kids on the Run. Make sure you pick that team when registering. This year kids cost only $15 for 5k and $10 for Kid's Race. This includes a shirt and good food and company afterwards.

Bike to Work Week I want to thank Larry Leigh, Linda Mize, Kyle Lewis, Jennie Stevenson, Katherine Angerman, Kevin Clark, Kimberly Keilman, Ray Nanek, Lora Kraemer, Gary Sitzmann, Christopher Engel, Michelle Pick, Kari Webb, and Sara Berntson for participating in the Bike to work week. Sara Bertson was the big winner! She won the donated bike from Siouxland Cyclists, and actually upgraded to the awesome bike you see to the right. Way to go Sara!

Get Your Bib On

People who go to the dentist at least once a year are more likely to feel better about their lives. The Healthiest State Initiative is devoted to making Iowa the healthiest state in the nation. One way they are focused on improving Iowa’s well-being ranking is by encouraging you to visit the dentist and “Get Your Bib On.”

As part of your health benefits package, you may be receiving dental coverage. Are you taking full advantage of your dental benefits?

Most dental plans cover preventive check-ups and cleanings. You may not even have to meet your deductible before taking advantage of these benefits. That means you can save your smile with little or no out-of-pocket cost.

Not only could preventive check-ups save your smile, they could also help you avoid a costly procedure in the future. Regular visits to the dentist can help stop problems from developing into more serious ones, saving you from more complicated dental treatment.

Plus, your dentist can screen for oral cancer at you exam and can also detect signs of other health issues such as diabetes and heart disease. And adults who report good dental health are also more likely to report good or better overall well-being.

So what are you waiting for? Don’t miss out on a healthy smile. Take advantage of your dental benefits today. Visit GetYourBibOn.com for tips on improving your dental health. The “Get Your Bib On” campaign is sponsored by Delta Dental of Iowa and The Meyocks Group.
