Margaret Oy, I’ve just polished that! Edmund Looks like it was made for a gorilla. (He jumps around it like a

gorilla and makes noises.) Peter And there’s a harp in the corner. SFX Sound of harp playing. Betty Or that! Susan It’s playing all by itself. Ivy That’s just the wind blowing through a broken window. Nora Why don’t you go off and explore upstairs? Plly Then we can get on with our work! The Four run around the space. The maids exit. The Ensemble create the shape of corridors and lots of rooms with their bodies. Susan Room after room after room! Lucy And all of them lined with books. The Ensemble create a line with each of them holding a book as if it is on a shelf. As the children walk along looking at the shelves the person at the end of each line moves to the front of the line, so the shelves carry on and on…. Edmund Mostly very old books. One of the ensemble passes him a book.

(He looks at it and blows dust off it into Lucy’s face. She sneezes.)

Susan Look, they’ve got The Secret Garden! Peter Treasure Island! Lucy The Railway Children! They move along a maze of corridors. Lucy What's in here?

They look towards the rostra. Four of the ensemble become the wardrobe holding four fur coats. The rest of the ensemble melt into the edges of the stage and sit. Susan It's empty. Lucy Except for the wardrobe. Peter, Susan and Edmund leave. But Lucy stays. She approaches the wardrobe. Lucy It's probably locked.

(She opens the wardrobe door and reaches inside.) Oh! What's this? Fur coats. Hundreds of them! (She steps into the wardrobe and rubs her face against a coat.) Leave the door open. (Mimicking a grown –up.) ‘It’s very foolish to shut yourself in a strange wardrobe.’ (Going further in.) It goes on and on. It must be a simply enormous wardrobe.

She pushes her way through the coats, (part of the ensemble merge with the wardrobe to make Christmas trees), pushing her way through the trees she steps off of the rostra, the ensemble set Mr Tumnus's house - table & two chairs.

Oh! Something crunching underneath my feet. Soft, powdery and

very cold. Snow.

Very odd.

And the fur rubbing my face – it’s gone all rough... tree branches?

Christmas tree branches.

And there's a light ahead of me, glowing......

Why put a lamp-post in the middle of a wood?

Lucy I’m very pleased to meet you Mr Tumnus, and all of you. Mr Tumnus And may I ask, O Lucy Daughter of Eve, how you have come

to Narnia? Lucy I came through the wardrobe in the spare room. Mr Tumnus (In a rather melancholy voice.) Ah, if only I had worked

harder at Geography when I was a little Faun, I should know all about these strange countries. Too late now. …….. Daughter of Eve, from the far land of Spare Oom and the city of War Drobe, will you come and take tea with us?

Lucy Well, thanks you all kindly. But I can’t stay too long. Mr Tumnus Take my arm, Daughter of Eve. This way to my humble

home… They all walk to Mr Tumnus’s house. All Creatures Welcome, welcome! Creature WILL Do take a seat. Lucy I’d rather explore, if you don’t mind. Mr Tumnus Explore, explode or stand on your head – it’s all the same to

Mr Tumnus produces a flute and plays it and the Creatures sing a song, led by their two leaders. Some of the group may sing solo lines. Mr Tumnus and the Creatures LEX & TABITHA: Once it was Midnight dancing

With Dryads who live in the trees And Nymphs who hide in the forest pools And Mermaids who swim in the seas

All: Once it was fun and feasting

With macaroons, melons and mirth And wild red dwarfs dug for emeralds In the caverns deep under the earth

And the sun rode high In a bluebell sky And blossoms shone on every bough In the long ago Long before the snow But it’s always winter now

Once it was peace and plenty For animals, insects and fish And all the forest-folk went in search of the Milk-White Stag who grants every wish

(Lucy dances and joins in the chorus)

And the sun rode high In a bluebell sky And blossoms shone on every bough In the long ago Long before the snow But it’s always winter now Always winter now

Mr Tumnus sinks down and starts sobbing. Lucy (Rather frightened) Mr Tumnus! Whatever’s the matter?

Mr Tumnus sobs even louder. Mr Tumnus I’m a terrible Faun! I don't suppose there's ever been a worse Faun since the beginning of the world.

Lucy What have you done? Mr Tumnus I’m in the pay of the White Witch! Lucy The White Witch? Who's she? Mr Tumnus She's the one who has the whole of Narnia under her spell. She makes it always winter. Always winter and never

Christmas; think of that! The White Witch told me that if I ever saw a human child I was to catch them. I’m a human kidnapper. Would you believe that I’m the sort of Faun to meet a poor innocent child in the wood and invite it home to my cave for tea so that I could hand it over to the White Witch?

Lucy Well that was pretty bad. But I’m sure you’ll never do it

again. Here have a hankie.

Mr Tumnus blows his nose loudly.

saw any human children, I was to catch them for her. And you’re the first one I’ve ever met. So I pretended to be your friend. And all the time I’ve been waiting for you to fall asleep so I can go and tell Her!

Lucy Oh but you won’t will you Mr Tumnus? Please let me go

home now. Mr Tumnus I didn’t realise what humans were like. But now I know you, I can’t hand you over to the Witch. Of course I’ll let you go home….. I’ll show you the way back to the lamp-post… Creature LILY Quietly does it.

Creature WILL The whole wood is full of her spies.

Creatures PHOEBE & MOSES Even some of the trees are on her side.

Creatures LAURIE & LUCA You never know who is watching….

Mr Tumnus and the Creatures lead Lucy off.

Tell you what is written on the Stone Table you stand upon? Cruel 2 You at least know the Magic which the Emperor put into Narnia at the

very beginning. Cruel 3 You know that every traitor belongs to the White Witch. Cruel 4 For every treachery she has a right to kill. Cruel 5 So that human creature is hers.

Cruel 8 He knows the Deep Magic better than that. Cruel 9 He knows the law. Cruel 10 That unless the Queen has blood, all Narnia will be overturned… Cruel 11 And it will perish in fire & water. Aslan It is true. I do not deny it. Come. (To the Witch) We will talk alone. (Aslan & the Witch walk across stage to have a private conversation) Aslan (Turning back) The matter is settled. The Cruels Senior Dance group enter and surround Aslan, the rest of the Cruels surround him further away. They all start to move in towards him. The Witch appears. Witch The Fool! The Fool has come. Bind him fast. Senior dance Group - Sacrifice Dance – very Pagan Witch Muzzle him! Senior Dance - As part of the dance. Aslan is muzzled and then tied up onto the Stone Table – rostra. The dance ends with all the Cruels moving in towards Aslan. They part for the Witch to enter the rabble. We cannot see the sacrifice but after a lot of frenetic movement they all step back slowly as if in a trance and we see Aslan lying dead on the Stone Table. The Witch laughs cruelly and they all melt away. There is a long still pause with nothing else happening for a while. Susan (Trying not to cry.) Come on, help me untie him. Lucy I'm so cold my fingers won't work. There is the SFX of an enormous crack, the Stone Table cracks apart & Aslan rises from the dead. Susan What does this mean? Is it more magic? Aslan Yes, it's more magic! S&L Oh Aslan! Lucy Aren't you dead then, dear Aslan? Aslan I am not dead. Not now. Lucy But what does it all mean?

45

Aslan It means that though the Witch knew the Deep Magic, there is a magic deeper still which she did not know. Her knowledge only goes back to the dawn of time.

But if she could have looked a little further back, into the stillness & darkness before Time dawned she would have read there a different incantation.

She would have known that when a willing victim who had committed no treachery was killed in a Traitor's stead, the Table itself would crack and Death itself would start working backwards.

And now – Oh children I can feel my strength coming back to me. We now have a great journey ahead of us. You must ride on me.

Susan, Lucy & Aslan freeze as if galloping and flying away. The Youth Theatre Ensemble enter speaking the following dialogue over music underscoring it. They physicalize each part of the verse and remove the stone table. At the end they take up statue positions in the Witches Palace. Ensemble Have you ever had a gallop on a lion's back?

Well, imagine the padding of great paws.

The soft roughness of golden fur

And the mane, flying in the wind.

And you're travelling faster than a train on a mount that never grows tired.

He rushes on and on,

Never missing his footing,

Threading his way between tree trunks -

Jumping over bush & briar

And rocks & streams,

Wading & swimming over the rivers.

And you're not riding down a road,

Or through a park,

But right across Narnia in Spring.

Down solemn avenues of beech,

Across sunny glades of oak -

Through wild orchards of snow-white cherry trees.

Past roaring waterfalls & echoing caverns.

Up Windy slopes alight with gorse bushes.

Over the shoulders of heather mountains.

Along giddy ridges and -

Down, down, down again -

Into wild valleys & out into acres of blue flowers -

Blue flowers -

Blue flowers -

Look below you.

A toy castle. Aslan No - that is the Witch's house! Now children - hold tight - shut your eyes!

We're going to land in the Witch's courtyard. The ensemble freeze as Aslan, Susan & Lucy unfreeze. Lucy What an extraordinary place? All those stone animals! It's like a

Aslan Our day's work isn't over yet, if the Witch is to be defeated we must find

the Battlefield at once.

All foulness was all stamped out.

And they made good laws and kept the peace.

They themselves grew and changed as the years passed over them.

And lived in great joy and if they ever remembered their life in this world-

It was only as one remembers a dream.

And then one year the White Stag appeared again.

The Four set off on horseback to find him -

And as they followed the stag deeper & deeper into the woods.

They came across a lamp post that was familiar -

Although they could not remember from where.

They pushed through the trees

The trees became - Coats! The four go through the wardrobe once again and tumble out into the room. They stand and stare at each other. The Professor is sat writing a large book. They all tell him what happened speaking at the same time, over the top of each other in excited voices. Professor I believe you. I believe you! But I don’t think it will be any good trying to go

back through the wardrobe door any more. You won’t get into Narnia again by that route. Indeed, don’t try to get there at all. It’ll happen when you’re not looking for it.

Lucy Will we really go back to Narnia again some day? Professor Yes, of course. Once a King of Narnia, always a King of Narnia. Lucy gives him a look.

Professor Once a Queen of Narnia, always a Queen of Narnia. The children all look at each other, smile and run off together laughing, leaving the Professor, who smiles to himself. He carries on writing for a while then he gets up and opens the book he is writing. We can see the cover clearly. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
