Principal’s Welcome Message

Welcome to Ashlawn School, a warm and forward thinking school community that combines high quality education with traditional values and high expectations. Building on a legacy spanning almost 70 years, we are proud to provide an outstanding educational experience for our students. We strive for academic excellence for all, knowing that all students have great potential and should be given every opportunity to fulfil it. Ashlawn combines the best aspects of traditional learning with skilled and creative teaching, based on the latest research, to provide a rich environment for all to make progress. Our Teaching School supports us to stay at the crest of the latest educational innovations and our wonderful teachers deliver a broad and balanced education through a well-designed, contemporary curriculum that caters for all students. At Ashlawn we promote a holistic approach to education with a focus on the development of the whole child, not just their academic results; therefore students are also encouraged to develop skills and expertise outside of the classroom through our extensive enrichment programme and an effective personal development curriculum. This approach allows us to nurture all students’ talents while supporting their wellbeing. I am determined that every student will be able to reflect on their time at Ashlawn as happy and fulfilling, and having provided the foundations needed for long term future success. I hope that this prospectus provides you with a flavour of life at our successful school and look forward to welcoming you to Ashlawn and working in partnership with you to achieve the best possible outcomes for your child.

Transition Arrangements: Starting in Year 7

Transition from primary to secondary education is an exciting prospect and a significant landmark in a young person’s educational journey. However, the idea of starting secondary school can be both a daunting and a challenging process for both pupils and parents. At Ashlawn School, we are aware of the importance of getting transition right. As a result, our transition arrangements are meticulously planned to ensure that a smooth, enjoyable and successful start to secondary education is experienced by our students. The transition process comprises of a comprehensive programme of events and strategic interactions which start in earnest during Year 5 and culminates in an action packed induction day during the summer term of Year 6. Visits to feeder schools and, for some, enhanced transitions are an integral part of our transition process which supports students to feel confident about starting secondary school. Crucially, our transition programme allows your child to engage with our staff, meet their peers and begin to form lasting friendships ahead of arriving in September.

Prospective students and their parents are encouraged to attend school open days and Prospective Parents’ Evenings. These events provide opportunities to get to know our school site as well as to ask any number of questions that you might have. During Prospective Parents’ Evenings you will be able to meet our caring and hardworking team of staff as well as some of our students who can provide a unique insight into school life and provide additional reassurance to those who are nervous about starting at secondary school. We are confident that having visited our school that you too will see why Ashlawn School is the first choice for so many students from a wide range of primary schools.

Our approach to transition ensures that our prospective students are welcomed as part of the Ashlawn School community long before they officially step through our doors as new Year 7 students. We welcome visits to the school from prospective parents and students. If you would like to arrange a visit or if you have any questions, please contact the school by phone or email. We look forward to welcoming you and your child to Ashlawn School.

Teaching and Learning

Ashlawn School places the highest value on the quality of teaching so we can ensure bright futures for all of our students. We believe that in order to continually improve the education we provide, we should seek to establish through research and other forms of evidence the most effective methods to teach and to learn. For our students to have the best life chances we believe that education must provide durable and flexible understanding to equip them for adult life.

Lessons at Ashlawn are structured around an agreed set of principles for effective learning with routines and high expectations which support these. Lessons at Ashlawn are welcoming, teachers meet and greet their students at the classroom doors, ensuring a calm and orderly start to our lessons. Typically, Ashlawn lessons and subjects will use questioning and dialogue with an emphasis on making connections with prior learning built around a sequence of lessons over a period of time. Teachers support students to become independent learners who are able to demonstrate critical thinking skills and to respond to the challenges of learning in a variety of ways.

We offer a broad and progressive curriculum. To be able to grow and make progress students and teachers will chunk knowledge into important and easier to assimilate “building blocks” to help learners become independent, creative, and fluent in their understanding over time. We see learning as a life-long journey where our school provides the best possible start.

As an organisation we have high expectations for our students and for ourselves. As an Ofsted “outstanding” school, we operate a Teaching School where we design professional development across a range of subjects for trainees and are proud to be the founding school of the nationally recognised Rugby researchED held each summer where we look at how evidence can continually improve our school and ensure that we are a learning community for all.

Achieve

Ashlawn School students learn exceptionally well. Throughout their learning journey they enjoy a full range of subjects and experiences, both in and beyond the school environment. The curriculum at Ashlawn fulfils the values and vision of the school by providing a range of opportunities for students to learn, achieve and realise their full potential. Students are offered an academic curriculum which prepares them for the challenges, opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life in ways which are rigorous and are rooted in intellectual challenge and pace. The curriculum has been designed to provide continuity and progression between and within key stages by a sharp focus on transition, and the transfer and development of knowledge and skills to be applied and creatively extended in both familiar and different contexts.

This rigorous and academic curriculum promotes progress, success and achievement as well as developing students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural appreciation which leads to engaging students in a commitment to lifelong learning.

Students’ achievement has been impressive over a number of years. Ofsted

ASHLAWN SCHOOLTRANSFORMING LIVES THROUGHLEARNING AND LEADERSHIP

Ashlawn Sixth Form Welcome to Ashlawn Sixth Form As a large Sixth Form we pride ourselves in ensuring all students feel part of the Ashlawn community. We offer an inclusive curriculum which has a wide range of academic and enrichment opportunities enabling our students to excel. Our dedicated, friendly staff are committed to achieving happy and successful learners who are empowered to embrace life after Ashlawn. We offer a personalised curriculum which places the learner at the centre of our Sixth Form. A learning pathway provides a unique, outstanding learning experience. Our Sixth Form Team will challenge, support and develop you in all aspects of life to ensure success in university application, apprenticeships or the next step you choose to embrace. Exciting learning experiences in a brand new Sixth Form Centre are an everyday part of Sixth Form life here. If you would like to join a supportive, friendly and aspirational Sixth Form, we look forward to receiving your application. Enrichment Activities In Sixth Form there is a range of opportunities extending way beyond the academic curriculum including the Sixth Form Leadership Team and Council, volunteering in a range of ways both in school and in our local community, educational visits which have included trips to Russia and Vienna as well many across the UK. We also offer the chance to take part in both the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme and World Challenge as well as offering an ongoing in-school enrichment programme which has a range of activities from cooking on a budget to changing tyres and windscreen wipers! Jayne Delves Assistant Principal "The teachers here are endlessly supportive to all of their students and during my GCSE years, this contributed massively to my results which I am incredibly proud of. The main reason I stayed at Ashlawn for Sixth Form in particular though is the Music Department. The extra-curricular activities such as Ashlawn Singers and the orchestra and wind band ensembles are incredibly important to me and the members of staff ensure that I dedicate my time to achieving my goal of progressing as a musician. These groups also massively enhance confidence and social skills which is reflected in all areas of day to day life.” Jacob

"Ashlawn is filled with incredible teachers that lend unwavering amounts of support to our students whether it be emotional, academic or moral. Each course is run and taught by teachers who share the love and excitement students have for the subject. Moving to Rugby, the summer before the start of Year 12, meant that I knew absolutely no one, which could be very daunting. However teachers, form tutors, administration and heads of year make it their mission to ensure no one feels like an outsider or ostracised". Chloe

I have been at Ashlawn for the last 5 years and have enjoyed every minute of my time here. Year 11 has been the most challenging year, but with all the support and encouragement from my teachers, I was able to revise and learn without feeling stressed or worried. The teachers also took time out of their day and offered me extra support during breaks, lunches and after school. All the teachers and support staff are so supportive and only want the best for every individual. From September I am hoping to study Criminology, Sociology and English Language and Literature at Ashlawn Sixth Form. I chose to stay at Ashlawn because I know I will achieve my potential and will be fully supported on the next part of my educational journey.

Olivia, Year 11

Going into a new school can be quite scary. You will have new responsibilities, people to meet, things to learn and new goals you want to achieve. Ashlawn is a massive school with lots of different rooms and buildings to find your way around. However, after a few weeks you quickly become used to the different places you have to go. From my experience at Ashlawn, having joined in Year 7 myself, I have learnt that the teachers and other students quickly become friendly faces who want what is best for you. If you have a goal you want to achieve, then the teachers will always do their best to help you achieve it. I am sure you will enjoy your time at Ashlawn and unlock your full potential whilst being here and I hope to see you around the school in the near future.

Liam, Head Boy.

Throughout my time here at Ashlawn, I was given endless support and encouragement within my subjects, from both the staff and peers surrounding me. I have to admit, I never imagined to be in this position of Head Girl, but I believe that anything is possible when you put your mind to it. Of course you may have worries and doubts about joining Ashlawn School, but I encourage each of you to get involved with every opportunity which heads your way, to make sure that you capture the full experience here at Ashlawn. When you arrive at Ashlawn in the near future, members of the Student Leadership Team and I will be sure to offer our help and support and be friendly faces in the corridor! I hope to see you all very soon!

Lucy, Head Girl.

The first day I arrived I was anxious and excited at the same time as I had just started a new path in my life. I had several friends from my primary school who also went to Ashlawn which helped because at least I knew someone. Only 6 weeks before, I was in the oldest year group of a school, now I was in the youngest. At the start I was uneasy about school because it was a big change for me but that was expected. After a few weeks it felt like I had been there for years. I had made friends, roughly knew my way around the huge school, and got to know all my teachers. The teachers were very welcoming and that helped as my relationship with them instantly started growing. Throughout my time at Ashlawn, from Year 7 to now, I have never regretted one bit of joining this school. The school as a whole is amazing, the environment is good, the people are brilliant and the facilities are great. My favourite subject is Psychology. It is so interesting and every lesson, you learn something new. I love it! In addition, if you have any struggles you can talk to any teacher about the issues you may have. Overall, my time at Ashlawn has been amazing. This place has made me the person I am today and I am very, very pleased. Year 9 student

.

When I first joined Ashlawn I was quite excited to meet new people and try new subjects. You have more independence moving around the school. It is quite big but you quickly get used to it and before you know it you remember where each of your classes are. My favourite lesson is P.E and I have played for the girl’s football team which I really love as it has enabled me to get to

know more people. I also play the guitar and have weekly lessons. My guitar teacher is great! I have a lot of subject teachers, which is a change from primary school, but they are all really nice and supportive. If I need to, I know I can talk to any of them. This year I got to go on the school ski trip which was amazing. I really enjoy Ashlawn.

Nia, Year 8.

My experience at Ashlawn has been such a journey! I remember on induction day that I was really nervous to start secondary school because it’s a really big step from primary. I thought that I was going to get lost in the school so many times because it was enormous! Luckily, the staff are really kind and helpful and even the older students are willing to help you, which I think is really nice. Yes, you will get lost at least once but you’ll get to know the school within no time, so don’t panic! Also, the lessons at Ashlawn are so interesting; you get to do Chemistry, Physics and even Biology. You even get to do practical lessons. If there is ever something that you don’t understand in class, you can ask the teachers and they will help you (all of my teachers are so kind). If you ever have any issues with anything at school, there are so many people you can talk to: Mr Ellis (Head of Year 7), your Form Tutor or any of your teachers. Overall, I have had an amazing time so far at Ashlawn and have made so many friends. You don’t need to worry about making friends because it’s such a big school there will be so many people that will want to be your friend. Good luck!

The Learning Development Department

Our aim at Ashlawn is to enable all students to achieve their potential academically and personally, regardless of ability or disability. We are a school in which the teaching and learning, achievements, attitudes and wellbeing of every young person matter. All of our students are entitled to a varied education and should be provided with the support and opportunities to enable them to become lifelong learners. The ethos of the LDD and Ashlawn supports the requirements set out in the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice 2015 that ‘every teacher is a teacher of every pupil’. All students are entitled to an education which provides high quality teaching and learning through a differentiated and personalised curriculum.

The strong LDD is led by a Head of Department and a SENDCo, with a successful team of teaching assistants, learning mentors and an autism specialist teacher. Our large team supports students with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCP), those that need special educational needs (SEN) support and teachers across departments and the age range ensuring strong links and consistency throughout the school. Excellent links with external agencies and Warwickshire County Council ensures that all students' needs are identified and met. We pride ourselves on developing a relationship with parents/carers based on mutual trust and respect and

encourage regular contact via phone calls, letters, emails and face to face meetings. Parents/carers have vital and unique knowledge about their child’s needs and we strive to recognise the importance of the wishes, views and feelings young people and their parents/carers have. We actively promote their participation in decision-making and acknowledge the importance of information and support.

Pastoral Care The well-being of every child is the most important aspect of any school and a child who feels supported, confident, happy and safe is likely to thrive. Ashlawn School has an outstanding pastoral team who offer care, guidance and support to all students. The team, supports students, closely monitors academic progress and acts swiftly to implement necessary intervention. The pastoral systems are led by Heads of School (Lower, Upper and Sixth Form). Each year group is led by a Head of Year and they are supported by pastoral assistants and a tutor team. The Head of Year has responsibility for their year group on a day-to-day basis, monitoring all aspects of a student’s experience including attendance, behaviour and academic progress. Tutors meet their tutor group every day and are the first and key providers of student support. In addition and working in conjunction with the pastoral team, the school provides extra support with the SENCO, Inclusion Team and learning mentors. We also work with a number of external agencies to ensure the pastoral support is effective and takes into account the needs of every young person. Successful pastoral care is a partnership between the school and home. Ashlawn School is committed to developing and maintaining these strong links. Regular formal contact is made through revision seminars, parent consultation events, our assessment system and through reports. Concerns are discussed either by letter, telephone or individual appointments at school. Parents and carers are always welcome and are encouraged to contact their child’s tutor, Head of Year or subject teacher.

Wellbeing at Ashlawn At Ashlawn we understand the importance of young people's emotional wellbeing and how it relates to their ability to learn. We know that good mental health is fundamental to be able to thrive in life. Research shows that high levels of good mental health lead to increased learning, creativity and productivity along with more pro-social behaviour and positive social relationships. This in turn leads to improved physical health and life expectancy. Wellbeing Wednesdays Many mental health issues begin during the school years, so it is logical that mental health education should be a part of the curriculum. At times, we all experience personal difficulties that may cause disruption and confusion in our lives. It’s important that, in times of high stress, we have strategies in place to protect our mental health. Every student at Ashlawn receives a weekly wellbeing session focusing on tools and strategies for managing their own mental health as well as raising awareness of mental health in general. “I like wellbeing Wednesdays as it starts my day off in a positive way and gives me ways to help my mental health” “Wellbeing Wednesday sessions give us a chance to learn about things like positive thinking and how to deal with stress” Mental Health Professionals We believe that access to talking therapies gives young people the chance to explore their thoughts and feelings and the effect they have on their behaviour and mood. At Ashlawn we work with external providers like CAMHS, local GP’s, the School Nursing Service and Compass to work with students to offer them the best support strategies to use in school. We work with a professional counsellor to provide bespoke programmes of support for some students and also provide small group work sessions, focussing on issues such as exam stress, anxiety and

bereavement. We have a dedicated Wellbeing Centre. Peer Supporters At Ashlawn we understand that young people often prefer to talk about their wellbeing to their peers as they feel able to identify with them. That is why we created the Peer Supporters Programme. Every year a cohort of between 15 and 20, Year 12 students take part in a 6 week training programme to prepare them to become a peer supporter. They are trained in active listening, safeguarding and equipped with general self-care strategies before being partnered

with a younger student who is in need of support with their wellbeing. “I found having a peer supporter really helpful as when I was having friendship problems they listened to me and helped me decide on the right thing to do.” Year 8 Peer Mentee “I really enjoyed being a peer supporter as I want to go in to one of the caring professions when I leave school and it gave me good experience in communicating non-judgmentally and with empathy.” Year 12 Peer Supporter

Mental Health First Aid Key figures in a young person’s life – parents, family members, teachers, tutors, carers, youth workers can often spot when a young person is struggling but may not know how best to help. At Ashlawn we currently have 15 members of staff who are mental health first aid trained with the aim of increasing that number over time. They have been given the skills and confidence to spot the signs of mental health difficulties in a young person, offer first aid and guide them towards the support they need. In doing so, they can speed up a young person’s recovery and prevent mental health difficulties from escalating. By training staff in Mental Health First Aid we aim to provide the information and skills for staff to look after their mental health so that they can set an example for our young people. By giving staff the tools to have these conversations, we empower them to create a mentally healthy and supportive environment at Ashlawn.

"Since receiving the Mental Health First Aid training, I feel more confident when I encounter a student in crisis, as I can support them not only in that very moment, but also by signposting them to services and organisations that can help them in the future. The training taught me that the smallest nuances in communication, such as subtly adjusting a turn of phrase or even being aware of your instinctive reaction to a disclosure, can make the greatest difference when approaching mental health.” “Having the Mental Health First Aid training enables me to support those who struggle in a better way and show them they are not alone.” “Having the Mental Health First Aid training enables me to spot signs that a young person may be struggling so we can act early and get them the right support.” Wellbeing Mentors As part of our commitment to supporting vulnerable students we have a team of Wellbeing Learning Mentors who are all Mental Health First Aid trained. The mentors work individually with students who are experiencing poor emotional wellbeing or are at risk of developing poor mental health to support them with strategies. Learning Mentors provide an additional layer of targeted support to help identified students overcome barriers to learning, whatever they may be. They support Ashlawn students in a variety of different ways, such as running small group interventions or providing a programme of bespoke sessions.

During these sessions, the students are encouraged to work towards regular, achievable targets which ultimately serve to help them reach their personal goal, set in the initial mentoring session. The Wellbeing Centre At the heart of Ashlawn’s commitment to the wellbeing of students and staff is the Wellbeing Centre. This room is home to the Wellbeing Team. Students are able to access support via the wellbeing centre through a combination of drop in sessions, referral by Heads of Year or on request via email. All staff working from the Wellbeing Centre are Mental Health First Aid trained. It is also home to groups such as the Headstart Breakfast Club, Skittles LGBTQ Club and support groups targeting anxiety, low mood and self-esteem.

Transforming Lives Educational Trust

The Transforming Lives Educational Trust (TLET) was established in October 2016 and grew out of a partnership between Ashlawn School and Henry Hinde Infant School. The desire to work together arose from the continuing population growth in the local community, our belief that we can shape and influence practice wider than our current schools, and the

desire to provide the community with more high quality school places. TLET currently comprises of a mix of secondary and primary phased schools in Rugby, including Houlton School due to open in 2021. Our Vision Learning Today for the World of Tomorrow TLET believe in the transformative power of learning and its singular ability to broaden horizons, deepen perspectives and extend potential. We want our family of academies to provide a springboard for our children, young people and staff so that they become exemplary citizens who strive to stretch their potential and become transformers in a diverse and ever-changing world. Our Values To help us fulfil our vision, we have a number of core values that drive all that we do. Our values are built around 5 key beliefs that we believe make us trustworthy by everyone within, or considering joining, the TLET. We believe that trusted relationships should underpin all that we do and achieve. Put simply, we aim for others to have trust in the Trust. Tend the team: listening to, sharing with and learning from others so that we nurture the potential of all (loyalty) Reach for excellence: only comparing ourselves to the best – seeking to match and then surpass it (excellence) Utilise innovation: seeking forefront thinking and creativity, and leading the change (courage) Seize success: holding onto our mission and building on our achievements (tenacity) Thank as you go: recognising the contribution of others to the Trust’s successes (kindness)
