The course explores how anthropologists study and compare human cultures. Cultural anthropologists seek to understand the broad arc of human experience f ocusing on a set of central issues: how people around the world make their liv ing (subsistence patterns); how they organize themselv es socially , politically and economically ; how they communicate; how they relate to each other through f amily and kinship ties; what they believ e about the world (belief sy stems); how they express themselv es creativ ely (expressiv e culture); how they make distinction among themselv es such as through apply ing gender, racial and ethnic labels; how they hav e shaped and been shaped by social inequalities such as colonialism; and how they nav igate culture change and processes of globalization that af f ect us all.
