hallowed be Thy name,

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven;

give us this day our daily bread;

ORGAN RECITAL

Good Music I (Probably) Wouldn’t Play for Church

Kevin Hildebrand Kantor

Prelude from Sonata in c minor, No. 3, Op. 56 Alexandre Guilmant

1837–1911

The opening movement of Guilmant’s sonata contrasts smashing chords and

cascading scale passages with mellow and reflective phrases. The quieter phrases

explore some soaring melodies and lead the piece into a key change before returning

to an even louder conclusion!

Fantasie in E Flat Major Camille Saint-Saëns

1835–1921

The Fantasie by French composer Saint-Saëns (pronounced san-SAWN) was his first

major organ composition, published in 1857. For historical comparison, the United

States was still four years away from the Civil War and Concordia Theological

Seminary was in its twelfth year of existence. The music of this piece is a bubbly

exploration that bounces between all three manuals (keyboards) of the organ. In fact,

no consecutive note is played on the same manual in succession in this piece. One

commentator has described this music as “listening to an organist juggling.”

Two Movements from Suite Gothique Léon Boëllmann

Menuet gothique 1862–1897

Priére

Boëllmann’s organ suite is best known for its spooky-sounding concluding toccata,

but these two internal movements are delightful, brief pieces that are seldom heard.

The Minuet, modeled after the baroque dance form with three beats per measure,

alternates between loud and soft phrases. The ethereal Prayer is meditative and

unashamedly explores some colorful and chromatic harmonies in all its Romantic-era

glory.

Andante sostenuto Jerry Bilik

b. 1933

My organ teacher at the University of Michigan, Dr. Marilyn Mason, died this April

at the age of 93. In addition to being one of the foremost organists of the twentieth

century, Dr. Mason (or Madame, as her students called her) was a leading proponent

of new music for the organ. The result was dozens of organ compositions that she

commissioned from colleagues and former students and then premiered at her own

recitals. Among them is this quiet and plaintive Andante. Jerry Bilik composes for

various genres, including TV and film scores, and you can hear allusions to that style

in this organ composition.

Nimrod, from Enigma Variations Edward Elgar

1857–1934

Transcription by Pierre Gouin

Edward Elgar is probably best known by one of his “Pomp and Circumstance”

marches that is used as the processional music for countless graduation ceremonies

(although not tonight at CTSFW). He wrote his Enigma Variations for orchestra, so

named for its meandering, mysterious musical theme. One of the most beloved of

these variations is the one named Nimrod, which Elgar dedicated to his friend Arthur

Jaeger. (The title is really a degrees-of-separation association by Elgar, as Jaeger

means “hunter” in German, and Nimrod was the great-grandson of Noah and is

described in Genesis 10:9 as a mighty hunter.) The soaring motive and rising and

falling dynamic levels make this music distinctive and beautiful.

Toccata and Fugue in d minor, BWV 565 Johann Sebastian Bach

1685–1750

With one of the most famous opening lines in organ music, Bach’s Toccata and

Fugue in d minor has sadly been associated more often than not with The Phantom of

the Opera and other so-called spooky organ music. Perhaps we need to redeem this

piece since it really is a marvelous example of Bach’s organ writing. The toccata

(literally meaning “to touch”) explores flashy scale passages, deep and rich chords,

and chromatic patterns. The fugue theme is explored in various keys in the manuals

and pedal, with interlude material that echoes back and forth between different

divisions of the organ.

Recessional “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” (LSB 656)

1 A mighty Fortress is our God,

A trusty Shield and Weapon;

He helps us free from ev’ry need

That hath us now o’ertaken.

The old evil Foe

Now means deadly woe;

Deep guile and great might

Are his dread arms in fight;

On earth is not his equal.

2 With might of ours can naught be done,

Soon were our loss effected;

But for us fights the Valiant One,

Whom God Himself elected.

Ask ye, Who is this?

Jesus Christ it is,

Of Sabaoth Lord,

And there’s none other God;

He holds the field forever.

3 Though devils all the world should fill,

All eager to devour us,

We tremble not, we fear no ill,

They shall not overpow’r us.

This world’s prince may still

Scowl fierce as he will,

He can harm us none.

He’s judged; the deed is done;

One little word can fell him.

4 The Word they still shall let remain

Nor any thanks have for it;

He’s by our side upon the plain

With His good gifts and Spirit.

And take they our life,

Goods, fame, child, and wife,

Though these all be gone,

Our vict’ry has been won;

The Kingdom ours remaineth.

Candidates for the Doctor of Divinity Degree Honoris Causa

Degrees Conferred May 17, 2019

Dean M. Bell

The Reverend Dean M. Bell is being honored for his decades of faithful service to the church.

Raised in northern Minnesota, Pastor Bell attended Moorhead State University in Moorhead,

Minnesota, graduating with a teaching degree. After several years of teaching, he received

certification in lay ministry from Concordia University Wisconsin. Additional study ensued at

Dr. Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minnesota. After nearly two decades as a lay

minister in various congregations in northern Minnesota, he was ordained into the

ministerium of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod via the colloquy program and served

as a parish pastor for another two decades until his retirement in 2017. A strong proponent of

continuing education, Pastor Bell has been very active in attending this seminary’s annual

symposia and continuing education classes.

During his four decades of service in various congregations, Pastor Bell has demonstrated a

long-standing and strong commitment of service to the wider church. He has served as a cir-

cuit visitor and a trained Synod reconciler. His membership on various boards is

wide-ranging, including the Board of Directors of both the Northern Minnesota District and

the Synod, the Board of Regents of both Concordia University Wisconsin and this seminary,

and the Board of Directors of the Confessional Lutheran Educational Fund and the Lutheran

Heritage Foundation.

Pastor Bell’s life has been richly blessed for the past forty-eight years through his marriage to

MaryAnn Bell. Their marriage has been blessed with five children and eleven grandchildren.

Jan Bygstad

The Reverend Jan Bygstad is being honored for his courageous leadership in confessional

Lutheran circles throughout Scandinavia.

A thoughtful and evangelical churchman, a deep student of the Holy Scriptures, and a

courageous confessor, Pastor Bygstad has demonstrated a constant readiness to step into the

public square at a time when Christianity has been severely tested in his native Norway. He is

widely published in both Christian and secular newspapers in Norway on topics related to

church life, music and worship, Lutheran identity, and marital law. He was active in the

Norsk Bibel 88 translation and has authored numerous textual studies for the Sunday

lectionary readings. He has lectured widely in Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and the

United States.

In 2002, Pastor Bystad’s conscience led him to leave the Church of Norway because of its

failure to proclaim the Gospel and administer the sacraments rightly. Issues he opposed

included the acceptance of homosexual practice, various ecumenical agreements, and the

ordination of women. He is currently pastor of the Bergen congregation of the Evangelical-

Lutheran Church (DELK), Norway’s oldest Lutheran free church. More recently, a compar-

atively large number of immigrants have sought baptism in his congregation, drawing him

into ministry and court cases in this regard. He has been active in working for the

establishment of biblical marriage practices. In the past, he received a prize from the Bergen

Municipality for his work in youth ministry.

The Lord has richly blessed Pastor Bygstad’s life through his long marriage to Kjersti, his

beloved wife, who died in Christ in 2018. Their marriage was favored with two children.
