With Winning In MindThe season of 2015… this would be my 9th year of racing. I remember when I was a shiny new racer. Well, my
spray can painted race bike wasn’t really all that shiny back then. Sometimes, it feels like that was just yester-day and other times it feels like it was centuries ago. Reflecting back, it is amazing how my racing goals have
changed over the years and how they still continue to morph in ways that I never expected.
I was a pretty inexperienced asphalt rider when I started racing with only a few hundred street miles under my belt. In my first couple of race weekends, my goals were simple, at least they seem simple
now, 1) make it through the Clubman Race on Saturday without crashing, and 2) at a pace fast enough to qualify for Sunday’s races. That constituted a win. By the end of my first season I had graduated out of Clubman.
The next year my goals progressed, as I had been told they would by the seasoned racers; finish not last, improve your personal best lap time, finish top 30, then top 20, then top 15…we had grids of 70 plus back then. I followed “the program”, each year getting a little bit faster and finishing a little higher up the order.
In my 4th season, I made the transition from the 650 to a 600 and had to take a step back in order to take two steps forward. I was in a different class of racers now. The 600 classes were known for the crazy fast young guns, more aggres-sive racing, and at a faster pace than the 650’s. Even though I took to the 600 immediately and improved on my 650 lap times, I found myself at the back of the pack once more. Prior to making the jump to the 600 I was working towards my top 10 goal in 650 Twins, but on the new bike I was suddenly shooting for top 25 once again. As frustrating as that was, it was time for me to take a fresh look at my riding skills, my understanding of my bike, and my ability to set goals yet keep an open mind. I developed a new plan centered around learning to ride the 600 and go faster, but with less risk. Coaching and bike set-up were major factors, yet the biggest difference was a change in my own personal belief in myself and my skills; the mental side of racing. If you think you are beaten…you are!If you think you dare not…you don’t!If you like to win, but think you can’t, it’s almost certain you won’t.If you think you will lose, you’ve lost. For out in the world you find…success begins with the knowledge that it is all in your state of mind!
I raced that entire season and the next 2 seasons without one crash, while I improved my personal lap times by 6-8 seconds at each track. I moved through “the program” in the 600 class, top 20, top 15, AMA racing, top 10, by 2014, I was aiming for top 5 and I was close, so close I could taste it. I was really beginning to push myself and find my limits.
“On a given day, a given circumstance, you think you have a limit. And you then go for this limit and you touch this limit, and you think, ‘Okay, this is the limit’. And so you touch this limit, something happens and you suddenly can go a little bit further. With your mind power, your determination, your instinct, and the experience as well, you can fly very high.” – Ayrton Senna
And then my luck ran out, I crossed the limits and found myself on the ground. Injury is a wicked side-effect of racing at times. Now, as I work through recovery and getting back to racing I have discovered that I have new goals; giving back to the sport I love, helping others find their way into the sport and achieving their goals. It is impossible to accu-rately convey all the great things that being a part of the AFM has filled my life with. Promoting and keeping this AFM club that I love thriving is should be a goal for us all. I dream of the “soon to come” days of having 70 bike grids once more and holding my own in the madness. That is victory! (Of course a few more plastic trophies along the way would be nice.)
