IONA 91, MON 86

Monmouth has won three of the last six in the series, and six of 10 against the Gaels.

Iona 91, Monmouth 86February 19, 2021

Monmouth staged a second-half comeback that saw MU with the ball and a chance to tie in the final seconds, but came up just short as Iona escaped with a 91-86 victory Friday night. Melik Martin posted his third double-double in four games

and Myles Ruth netted a career-high 13 points in the contest.MU opened the half with an 11-2 run to trim the Iona lead to 11, but an evenly played next few minutes saw the Gaels

back up 18 before the MU run. Deion Hammond netted three triples in a little over two minutes, and MU got it to eight with under two minutes to go. A Nikkei Rutty dunk preceded four

Hammond foul shots cut it to four, and after a pair of Iona free throws, MU trimmed it to three and got it back with a

chance to tie after the Gaels missed the front end of a one-and-one. MU had the ball with a chance to tie but were unable to convert, falling in the weekend opener. Monmouth jumped

to an early 8-7 lead on a pair of Ruth buckets, forcing an Iona timeout less than four minutes in. Iona responded with an 18-2 run to widen their lead before McClary knocked in a late three

to send it to the break at 54-34 Iona.

2020-21 MONMOUTH BASKETBALL GAME NOTES 5

MONMOUTHNOTESRUTH WITH A CAREER BEST Freshman point guard Myles Ruth continued to impress, posting his first career double-figure scoring effort on 2/19 at Iona with 13 points, a career best. He hit a big three in Monmouth’s second-half run, and also grabbed five rebounds, tying a career best.

MELIK MARTIN PLAYING HIS BEST BALLMelik Martin is averaging a double-double in the last four games, and posted his third in four games last night. He was named the MAAC Player of the Week following the Manhattan series in which he was a half rebound shy of averaging a double-double for the two games. He posted a double-double in the second game with 14 and 10 after going for 18 and nine the prior night. He is coming off his first career double-double on 1/30 against Niagara with 14 points and 11 rebounds. In the last nine games, he has scored in double figures seven times (and netted nine points in the one he fell short of doubles vs. Quinnipiac), and is averaging 15.7 points, 7.6 rebounds, has 13 steals and is shooting 50% from the field. Martin has made a whopping 53 field goals in the last nine contests, including 14 triples, and has blocked three shots while dishing out 16 assists.

HAMMOND BREAKS THE THREE-POINT RECORD Deion Hammond set the Monmouth career record for made three pointers on February 6 at Manhattan, when he knocked in a three as the shot clock expired at the 6:01 mark of the second half. His 261st three moved him past Dave Calloway on the all-time list, with Calloway as the only player to hold the record previously as he was part of the program right at the introduction of the three-point line. Calloway held the record for 30 years before Hammond moved past him.

THESE SENIORSIn the February 6 win over Manhattan, all four Monmouth seniors scored in double-figures and accounted for 52 of the 71 points in the victory. For the season, Monmouth’s four seniors (Hammond, Papas, Martin, McClary) have scored 727 of MU’s 1,168 total points. All three Hawks averaging double digits are seniors, while McClary is the teams leading rebounder.

BIG MAN NIKKEINikkei Rutty blocked a career high four shots in the win over Manhattan on February 6, the most in a game by a Hawk since the final game of the 2018-19 regular season, when Mustapha Traore had four rejections at Manhattan. Rutty also grabbed 11 rebounds in the game, tied for the most boards in a single game by a Hawk so far this year.

THE MAAC STANDINGSIn this unique season, it does not appear every MAAC team will play in 20 conference games, meaning the tiebreaker rules set forth preseason as a possibility will be placed into effect. Such rules place emphasis on total wins, placing the Hawks in first place by virtue of their 10 league wins, two more than second-place Siena/Saint Peter’s eight.

WE PLAY FASTAccording to basketball analytics website KenPom.com, Monmouth plays at the third fastest pace in the nation. Mon-mouth posts 75.4 possessions per game, scoring the Hawks in the top-three nationally based on an estimate of the tempo (possessions per 40 minutes) a team would have against the team that wants to play at an average D-I tempo. The next fastest team in the league ranks as Quinnipiac, who is 43rd in tempo at 71.4 possessions per contest. There are only four MAAC teams in the top 200, with Canisius at 100 and Rider at 172 joining MU and QU.

100 STARTS FOR #3 Deion Hammond became the 10th player in program history to start 100 games when he got the nod at Niagara on 1/30. Hammond has started 50 games in a row for the Hawks and 83 of the last 84, only missing the start in the 2019 MAAC quarterfinal win over Quinnipiac in which he played 29 minutes off the bench.

ASSIST-TURNOVER RATIOThe Hawks this season are plus in the assist-turnover category, dishing out 236 assists next to 221 turnovers. MU ranks second in the MAAC in the category at +1.08. Monmouth posted 23 assists to just nine turnovers in a win over Niagara on 1/29, marking a pair of milestones. The plus-14 is the best in a single game for MU under King Rice, while the 23 assists is the most since Rice’s second season, when the Hawks opened the season with 25 helpers in a win over Hofstra on November 9, 2012. Point guard Samuel Chaput is by far the league leader in assist-turnover, posting 53 assists-26 turnovers, a +2.38 marker.

FIVE IN A ROW With the 1/29 win at Niagara, Monmouth won its fifth in a row for the first time since the program record 17-game winning streak that concluded the regular season and continued into the MAAC Tournament in 2017. The Hawks had previously won four straight, the sixth four-game winning streak MU has had in the last two seasons.

MAAC WEEKEND UPDATE Through seven-plus weekends of MAAC play, Monmouth has picked up four sweeps and won the opening game six times in eight tries. The Blue and White have only dropped a pair of games once, doing so just after the New Year at Siena.

During that time McNeil has been a collegiate athlete, coached at the collegiate level, served has an administrator and has spent the last 28 years as Monmouth’s Director of Athletics. During her tenure, the Hawks have won 119 regular season conference championships while making 38 team appearances in various NCAA Tournaments. The Hawks have claimed 11 overall commissioner’s cups in the Northeast Conference and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and have finished lower than second just once (third in 1998-99) during her time in West Long Branch. On a national scale, McNeil’s contributions to Title IX cannot be understated. The Hawks have added seven sports during McNeil’s tenure, five of which have added collegiate opportunities for women.

DEION AMONG NCAA ACTIVE CAREER LEADERSDeion Hammond is 16th in the NCAA in made three-pointers among active players at 261, and 13th among active players in three-pointers attempted with 724. His 1,536 total points is also 40th among active players.

MYLES THE POINT GUARDFreshman point guard Myles Ruth has impressed early, with Monmouth ripping off seven of eight wins since he was in-serted as the starter. In nine of 15 contests this year, he has grabbed multiple steals. He has contributed in all facets of the game, scoring a career-best eight points and grabbing a career-high four steals in two of the last four games. He is shooting 50% from the field from the point guard spot, and 45.5% from beyond the arc.

HAWKS, PAPAS LIST ATOP NATIONAL THREE-POINT RANKINGSMonmouth is 19th in the country in three-point percentage at 38.5%, having made 124 of 322 attempts. This is the best mark in the MAAC, and sits behind undefeated Baylor. Individually, George Papas is 10th in the country in three-point shooting at 44.8%, shooting 39-87 from deep. His numbers also lead the MAAC, and he is one of just eight players in the top 10 to have played in more than six games. Papas’ 37 makes are also 58th in the country and tops in the MAAC, and he is one of 10 players nationally to make 9 or more threes in a game, doing so on opening night against Hofstra. Two players have made 10 in a game, with eight others tying Papas’ nine.

1,000 WINS AS A PROGRAMMonmouth won it’s 1,000th game as a program on Sunday, 1/10 against Marist, 72-62. The milestone win came in the programs 65th season dating back to 1956, when the Hawks debuted with a 51-47 win over Jersey City State behind 17 points from Jack Perri on 12/1/56 at the Long Branch YMCA. In that time, remarkably, the program has had just five full-time head coaches and all coached at least 10 seasons for the Blue and White. This excludes longtime Monmouth assistant Ron Krayl, a 35-year MU assistant, who won seven games as the interim head coach in 1986-87.

HAMMOND’S CLIMB OF THE ALL-TIME SCORING LISTHammond is currently in sixth place on the all-time Division I scoring list with 1,561 points, which puts him 182 points behind John Giraldo and Alex Blackwell, who are knotted for second. Last week vs. Manhattan, Hammond moved into sixth place all-time on the program’s scoring list. Hammond is the seventh player at the MU DI level to reach 1,500. Next in his sights is Corey Albano’s 1,599 points, which Hammond is 38 shy of.

NEVER EVER TRAILEDIn the two-game sweep of Marist, Monmouth not only led for 78:19 of the 80 minutes, the Blue and White did not trail for one second on the weekend. In Saturday’s game, a Hammond jumper put MU up 25 seconds in, and on Sunday, Melik Martin netted a runner 36 seconds in.

KING GETS 150Head Coach King Rice became the fourth coach in Monmouth history to win 150 games on 12/18 against Saint Peter’s, with all of them coming at the helm of the Hawks. Rice’s first win came on 12/6/11 at Navy, with win #50 coming over Siena on 3/1/15. His 100th win took place at Manhattan, when a late Micah Seaborn triple propelled his Hawks over the Jaspers on 2/10/17. Rice joins three other MU coaches at the 150 win mark (Bill Boylan, Wayne Szoke, Dave Calloway), and just two that have done it at the Division I level (Szoke, Calloway). There are currently 173 active DI head coaches with 150+ wins, with Rice recently joining that group. Of those 173, only 34 of them have won 150+ games at only one school. Rice is the only coach currently in the MAAC to post 150 wins at their current institution.

ALL THE NOTES ON PAPAS TYING SINGLE-GAME THREE-POINT RECORD-In the season opener, George Papas tied the program record for made three-pointers in a single game with nine. His outburst tied Monmouth Hall of Famer and former head coach Dave Calloway’s mark, set on January 2, 1990 in a win at Pepperdine. The record stood for more than 30 years before Papas tied it. -Papas is one of four players in school history to record 7+ threes in a game on two different occasions, joining Justin Robinson, Dejan Delic and Dave Calloway.

ICE IN HIS VEINSMarcus McClary hit arguably the two biggest shots in the 1/15 win over Quinnipiac. The senior knocked down a baseline jumper with 0.6 seconds left to cap a monster comeback, and then drilled a three in OT to ice the contest for MU.

2020-21 MONMOUTH BASKETBALL GAME NOTES 7

King Rice has been on the Monmouth sideline for nine seasons and enters his 10th in 2020-21. He has a pair of MAAC Coach of the Year honors to his credit. He has set Monmouth records for wins in a season with 28 and consecutive victories with 17. Rice also set a MAAC Record in 2016-17 by winning 18 league games for the first time ever. He has also won the JohnMc-Lendon National Coach of the Year honor, while being named a finalist for the Ben Jobe Award.

The 2019-20 season saw Rice lead the Hawks to an 18-win campaign, tied for the third most in a season in his tenure. He had his third player ever named to the All-MAAC First Team in junior guard Deion Hammond, who finished second in the league in scoring, while backcourt mate Ray Salnave was a Second Team selection. Hammond and Salnave both reached the 1,000 career point plateau in their third seasons. MU finished non-league play over .500 in a slate that included wins over Princeton, Albany, Lehigh and eventual Big South regular season champion Radford, and eventually tied for third in the conference and secured a first-round tournament bye for the fourth time in six seasons.

Rice orchestrated a momentous turnaround in 2018-19, leading the Hawks to the confer-ence finals while beating three teams in the MAAC Tournament that MU had not yet topped

during the regular season. He tutored senior big man Diago Quinn into All-MAAC Third Team honors, while the New York City native graduated as the program’s all-time games played leader.

Rice coached a pair of players to All-Conference honors in 2017-18, including four-year guard Austin Tilghman, who was named to the Third Team and also became the first guard in school history to register a triple-double, doing so at Yale on December 22. He also mentored Deion Hammond to unanimous All-Rookie Team accolades, with the guard averaging 12 points per contest.

In eight years in West Long Branch, Rice has now graduated 23 seniors. Following the 2016-17 year, Monmouth men’s basketball was one of 35 programs recognized across the nation in men’s hoops for its multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR) and received the NCAA’s APR Public Recognition Award. Monmouth was the only school in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference as well as one of just three teams in the state of New Jersey. Rice’s team has earned this recognition in three straight seasons.

With his second straight conference Coach of the Year honor in 2016-17, Rice became just the third coach in MAAC history to repeat and the second to do it outright, joining former Iona coach Tim Welsh and ex-LaSalle head man Speedy Morris. Rice secured a second consecutive regular season title and the top seed in the MAAC Tournament, coaching the Hawks to a National Invitation Tournament for the second time. He also earned his second straight NABC District I Coach of the Year accolade, the first MU coach to do so.

Rice mentored Justin Robinson to a second straight MAAC Player of the Year and third All-MAAC First Team, as well as being named the Lou Henson National Mid-Major Player of the Year. Robinson graduated as the school’s all-time leading scorer at the Division I level and became the second 2,000-point scorer in MU history. He also coached his second MAAC Sixth Man of the Year in three years in guard Austin Tilghman, and a second straight all-league selection for Micah Seaborn, who was named First Team. MU won 17 straight games, including 16 straight to end the regular season, not losing after January 2. He secured a comeback win at Memphis in December, as well as a win over eventual Ivy champion Princeton at home.

In 2015-16, leading the Hawks to a program best 28 wins and a top seed in the National Invitation Tournament, as well as wins over five high-major programs. He coached the Hawks to the MAAC regular season title with a 17-3 league mark, collecting MAAC Coach of the Year honors in addition to being named John McLendon National Coach of the Year. Rice picked up ECAC and NABC District I Coach of the Year accolades as well, while being named a finalist for the Ben Jobe Award.

Rice posted 17 league victories, including an 11-2 mark at home and a nation-leading 13 road tallies and 17 wins away from home, including neutral site wins. He secured Monmouth’s first regular season title in 11 years and the top seed in the conference tournament while knocking off the program’s first-ever ranked opponent in No. 17 Notre Dame on Thanksgiving night as well as wins at UCLA, Georgetown and Rutgers and a neutral site victory over Southern California. The Blue and White also notched its first national postseason win since 2006 and the first ever at home, topping Bucknell in the opening round of the NIT.

In his fifth season in West Long Branch, Rice mentored MAAC Player of the Year Justin Robinson and league Rookie of the Year Micah Seaborn, both of whom were all-conference selections along with senior Deon Jones. Robinson earned multiple national awards while setting the single-season scoring record under Rice’s tutelage.

Following the 2015-16 campaign, Rice was rewarded with a contract extension, which extended his contract to 2020-21.Rice, who was named a finalist for the 2015 Ben Jobe National Coach of the Year Award, led the Hawks to an 18-15 overall record

in 2014-15 and a 13-7 mark in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action, which resulted in the No. 4 seed in the league postseason. The Hawks, who advanced to the conference semifinals in just their second season in the league, put a pair of guards on all-conference teams and held 26 of their opponents to 70 points or less.

In 2014-15, the Hawks placed guard Justin Robinson on the All-MAAC First Team and the NABC All-District Second Team and guard Deon Jones on the All-MAAC Third Team, while senior guard Andrew Nicholas was honored as the league’s Sixth Man of the Year.

Rice, whose roster featured nine first-year players and no seniors in 2013-14, guided the Hawks into their first season in the MAAC, where the Blue & White claimed the No. 9 seed in the league’s postseason. In his first two seasons in the league, Monmouth outperformed its preseason coaches poll prognostication, as the Hawks were selected sixth prior to 2014-15 and finished the regular season in a tie for third place, with eventual tournament champion Manhattan.

In 2013-14, paced by one of the highest scoring duos in program history in Jones and Nicholas, the Hawks posted an 11-21 overall record, which included the championship trophy in the regional pod of the Barclays Center Classic, and the team’s highest scoring average in 13 years.

The Hawks started the 2012-13 campaign with a 5-3 record before finishing their final season in the Northeast Conference with an overall mark of 10-21 and 5-13 in league play. Monmouth, which ranked near the top of the league in steals and turnover margin, capped its season with forward Ed Waite scoring his 1,000th career point and guard Jesse Steele writing his name all over the record books in just two and a half seasons.

In his first season with the Blue and White, Rice made an immediate impact on the program, leading the Hawks to a fifth place tie in the league standings. The Hawks finished 12-20 overall, but finished the year winners of nine of their last 12 games to claim a 10-8 league mark and grab the No. 6 seed in the conference postseason.

Prior to the 2016-17 season, the arena formerly known as The MAC was renamed the OceanFirst Bank Center thanks to a naming rights deal with OceanFirst Bank. MU Basketball enters its eighth season in the building af-ter playing previously in Boylan Gymnasium. Monmouth University ushered in a new era in the school’s history with the completion and opening of the long anticipated arena in the Fall of 2009. It not only serves the school’s 23 Division I Athletics programs, but is also a key asset for the entire University community. The facility features classroom and seminar space and a confer-ence center that can be used for meetings, or be partitioned and used for study hall, clinics or workshops. The gym, which features a state-of-the-art fitness center, is also the location of the Leon Hess Champions' Hall, Mon-mouth Athletics Hall of Fame and Varsity Club, which will be used for hospi-tality for Blue/White Club members. Student lounges and study areas with complete wireless Internet access are also available.

The OceanFirst Bank Center, which is connected to Boylan Gym and the Steadman Natatorium, is 153,200 square feet of space for students and the community to utilize in many different capacities. It’s most prominent fea-ture is the 4,000 seat arena, which is the nest for the Monmouth men’s and women’s basketball programs. The arena also features a six-lane, 200-meter indoor track, which can be used for training and competition all year long. A fitness center with state-of-the-art strength and cardiovascular equipment is also housed here.

The arena provides varsity athletes & coaches with meeting facilities, locker rooms, practice and competition facilities & expanded and upgraded ame-nities. The University Bookstore was also relocated from the Stafford Stu-dent Center, which will improve accessibility for commuting students, and the additional square footage will enable the stocking of a greater variety of merchandise.

In the summer of 2011, with funds raised through private donations, Mon-mouth’s varsity athletics weight room was given a $200,000 overhaul.

Renovations, which began in June and were funded entirely by the gener-ous donations of Monmouth supporters, included a brand new Mondo floor, replaced HVAC system, new lights and a fresh paint job. The aesthetics of the room were improved with MU branded wall decorations.
