Schip Happens is produced by Red & White Unite, the Melbourne Heart F.C.Supporters Association. It is a wholly independent fanzine and does not have any afliationwith Melbourne Heart F.C. or The FFA. All views, opinions, rants, raves etc. expressedon the pages of this fanzine are those of the authors and are not representative of RWU,MHFCSA, our sponsors, Melbourne Heart F.C. or The FFA. Our articles are personal opinionpieces and not designed to be fully factual in all cases and we would advise that any offeringbe taken with a pinch of salt. ell, well, well. Eight matches to go, and Heart is sitting in fth place. If you told uswed be there in round ve, we would have laughed. If you told us wed be there inround thirteen, we would have cried. But all in all, it seems about right for the season

weve had.Our awful stretch at the start is long behind us, and the boys look unlikely to hit such

a patch again, but our winning streak also looks a long time in the past. Injury to Fredhas taken some of our mideld sting, and the departure of Adrian Madaschi has left us alittle disorganised at the back - the results have borne this out - and now we are withouteverybodys favourite future Socceroo Aziz Behich, as well as Mate Dugandzic and JasonHoffman, who are on Olyroos duty.

Tonight will be Hearts toughest derby yet, and despite our recent results, the team must take condence from the Visitors poor run of form and ongoing backroom drama. Expect things to get very edgy out there.

Onwards and upwards. In edition 4 we have some cracking stuff for you. Another realproper writer, Tony Wilson, lends Schip Happens! his pen on page 6, and opens up aboutHearts devastating impact on his wifes love for him. On page 13, Mate talks about his lovefor KFC and Mountain Dew, and we nd out just what his favourite literary work is. And wehave yet another special centrefold for the derby - this time dedicated to the thirdmost-famous Costa Rican (behind luminaries Francisco Amighetti and Claudia Poll),Carlos Juan Tonne Hernandez.

Remember, if you have a tale to tell, a review to write, or a picture to paint, send it tous at [email protected].

    Uncanny

I was watching an episode of the Irish comedyseries Father Ted and it occurred to me thatthe Father Jack character had an uncannyresemblance to Visitors manager Jim Magilton. Was Jim an actor before he went into footballmanagement?

    Ardol

    Hi Ardol,

We are not sure ifJim was an actor, but we know he isdoing a poor renditionof a football managerat present. Ed

    Bitter litterer

I was at the derby game on 23 Dec and asI collected my issue of Schip Happens!, aMelbourne Visitors supporter also took one. When he got to the top of the steps I saw himrip up the magazine and throw it on the oor. What do you think upset him A. The front page saying that there are twoteams in Melbourne; both redB. The Losers logo on page 2C. He realised that it was not a picture bookand had far too many words with more than 5 letters?Anyway, congratulations on a ne read and alsofor being able to upset Visitors fans so quickly.

Match PreviewHeart v Visitorsby Aaron Petrucci

espite the Hearts season stalling after an incredible run of seven wins in eight games, the team and John van t Schip still have many positives to take into todays derby.

Heart keeper Clint Bolton, who recently moved into second place for all-time national

league appearances, is in career-best form, and wing-backs Behich and Marrone haverevelled in their mideld roles under JVS 3-4-3 formation, pushing forward to shoot and

    support the strikers.

A demanding schedule, injuries to Fred, Srhoj and Germano, and Madaschis departure

to Korea have given youngsters Sarkies, Hoffman and Williams the opportunity to establishthemselves in the starting line-up, and all three have impressed despite the dip in results.

Credit must lie with coach JVS, who persisted with the Hearts attacking formations, and

his faith in the players nearly paid off with an outstanding performance against the league

leaders Central Coast before a late goal robbed the team of a deserved victory. This was

followed up with another quality performance against defending champions Bri sbane Roar.Bolton, four time NSL/A-league winner, recently felt that Heart was losing intensity and

letting opposition players have a sniff that youre letting up on them.Victory in particular needs no more than a sniff of weakness to take the initiative on derby

day. Armed with new coach Jim Magilton who claims to play an attractive brand of passing

football, navy-blue supporters demand revenge after feeling like the turkey over Christmas.

While Heart can play well and lose, Victory can play very badly and win.

So just who is Jim Magilton?

Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Magilton was known as a talented midelder who

spent over 15 years and played 580 games in the English football leagues, most notably

alongside English international Matt LeTissier at Southampton in the Premier League from1994-97. A natural box-to-box ball fetcher and carrier, he also made 52 appearances for

Northern Ireland and scored ve goals.

His rst managerial role was at Ipswich Town, a club he played for from 1999-2006. He

lifted the Tractor Boys to eighth position in his second season, narrowly missing the 2008play-offs for the Premier League. The following season he was sacked, but was quickly

picked up by Queens Park Rangers. He left that position within six months after reportedly

head-butting a player in a d ressing room. After treading water as assistant manager at Irelands Shamrock Rovers, he was signed

as Victory caretaker coach for the remainder of this season.

He has shown passion for the Victory cause by celebrating their goals like a fan, and hishalf-time thrashing of the players in Perth shows his determination for the team to improve.

    Sleeping with the enemy

I was intrigued by the Change of Heart photosof Melbourne Visitors fans attending Heartgames in the last issue of Schip Happens!. Atthe last three home games v Perth, CCM andBrisbane, I have noticed Visitors fans sittingwith the away fans. How puzzling to see themcelebrating when the away team scored. Dothey not realise that they are actually celebratingteams moving above their team on the ladder? It would be like Liverpool fans sitting with ManUtd supporters in the away end at Man Cityand celebrating a United goal against the blues.Unbelievable.

    HEARTRUINEDMY WIFE

    76

Author, tv and radio presenter andVictory fan Tony Wilson gives hisview from the other side.

She said that shepreferred the Heartcolours, that she likedthe Hearts name.

one-minute pieces for the SBS comedyshow Santo, Sam and Eds Cup Fever.

Tam and the kids picked me up from theairport, and after the tearful reunion, Iwaited a diplomatic 45 seconds beforeasking which of my segments shed likedthe best.

The one in which I was dressed up asthe pirate Barbarossa? I proffered.

That one was okay. The one where we chanted Wheresyour Montenegro to the Serbian fans?

Yes ... although ... What about the one with the South

American commentators competingto see who could summon the longestgoooooooooal.

She nodded distractedly. We were aboutto move off topic when Tam inexplicablydragged it back. You know what segmentI didenjoy. Their interview with the newHeart coach John van something-or-other. He seemed very ... nice. And hehad a cute accent.

Van t Schip, I told her curtly. HesDutch. You know if you marry himyour surname will have a bewilderingapostrophe and lower case v in it.

Im not going tomarryhim, Tam saidreassuringly, before following up less

reassuringly with, As if hed want to marryme, as though that was the real stumblingblock to the negotiation.

Nevertheless, she did startbarrackingfor the Heart. She said that she preferredthe Heart colours, that she liked theHearts name. But I saw through these littlered and white lies. I took to approachingher with pin-ups of Ernie Merrick. Lookat the bone structure, Id say. Howcan you not admire that blotchy Scottishcomplexion? But my wife was van tSchipwrecked in a delusional world ofcute mispronunciations and preternaturallytanned skin.

The ght now is for the allegiance of thekids. Im so far holding the day by plyingthem with blue and white merchandiseand playing Victory the Brave on repeatduring every car trip. Its been a headycocktail, and every screamed requestfor Victory Song! is taken as just that,a victory. Ive been dragging them tomatches, investing twenty-odd dollarsin decidedly average half-time sh andchips, all in the hope of consolidatingtheir enthusiasm for Archie and Harry andeveryones favourite chicken impresario,Roddy Vargas. Its been moderatelysuccessful, although my two-year-oldHarry is terried by the noise when wescore (picture inset).

Which, by the way, HARDLY EVERHAPPENS! Its been such a disappointingseason. I remember watching theDecember derby, the one in which we

dominated for twenty minutes, butthen Carlos missed the penalty, Archie

missed, Harry missed and the gameswung so comprehensively your way thatby the thirty-minute mark it was almostembarrassing. Theres Only One Team inMelbourne, the Brigadiers sang hopefullybelow me, even as the wrong Thompsonkept burying chances. I admired oursupporters pluck, I admired their choralcohesion, but this time I didnt share the

sentiment. For game-plan, work-rate,intensity, nish and results, we were beingblown off the park. Only one team inMelbourne? That night, we were doingyour heckling for you.

Tonight, though, its a new match, afresh derby, and every football fan in thecity will be rejoicing for the fact that thereare two teams in Melbourne. Theres us- the establishment, with our bluebloodplaying roster and overblown sense ofentitlement. And you - the upstarts, withyour younger sibling insecurity and ourFred! Give us back our Fred!

And while youre at it, give me backmy wife!

If theres one thing I admire about myfootball tribe, the one which darentspeak its name aloud in this esteemed

red and white publication, it is our abilityto sing. Were North End, were NorthEnd, were North End over here! Wevesung that since year one of the A-League,beckoning our South End brethren toanswer, relocating the chant from Olympic

Park to Etihad Stadium to AAMI Parkwithout fear nor favour as to whether theNorth End is actually in the north, or theSouth End is actually in the south.

Weve sung Oh Melbourne is! Wevesung the minimalistArchie Thompson, dede de de, and lately, the Blue and WhiteBrigade has even been dabbling withthe Triumphal March from Aida, whichis classy and operatic, and quite frankly, considerably better than anything youscumbags have pumped out on thesong front.

Damn. Its only paragraph two andIve already accidentally called youscumbags. I dont really mean it.

Although you do have to admit Victory theBrave is better than Underneath the City, which resembles the sort of melancholydirge you might belt out after nine hourson the booze when last drinks have been

called at the Irish theme pub, and yourwife has just telephoned through to saythat shes leaving you.

Okay, thats a bit harsh. But I am feelingnone too charitable towards the Heart. It actually has a bit to do with my wife.

You see, I think she might be in love with... no, its too terrible to admit ... at thevery least she has a crush on ... should Igo public with this? Okay, Ill be out withit. I think my wife, Tamsin Wilson, has thehots for John van t Schip.

My suspicions were rst raised whenI returned from the World Cup in South

Africa, where I had been lming

IIs Harry upset by the noise, Dads hat or thecolours? No, he just wants his Mummys team.

    Book

    Australia Unitedby Tony Wilson

In Australia United, Tony Wilson recountshis month-long trip of a lifetime to followthe Socceroos at the 2006 World Cupnals in Germany.

    He begins with Aloisis priceless

penalty against Uruguay, shares theagony and the ectasy of the three groupgames, the dejection of the Italy defeatand concludes with his experience as aneutral at the nal in Berlin.

But its not just a book about footballor being a football fan. There are plenty ofdiversions and distractions both culturaland comical along the way. Think BillBryson (Neither Here nor There) meetsNick Hornby (Fever Pitch): part-diary, parttravelogue by a football-obsessive witha self-deprecating sense of humour butwith a knack of telling it from a unique,Australian perspective.

He explains the quest to deliver a packof Cherry Ripes to Harry Kewell, meetingan indifferent Shane Warne and LesMurray and the punch-up between SamNewman and a Socceroo fan in a beerhall. And theres the chants like Yourshirt is a tablecloth and Youre s__t butyour chicks are hot to the Croatian fans.

Most of all, for those of us that willprobably never experience a World Cupat rst hand, Australia United explainsvividly what it was like to be in the thick ofthe Worlds greatest sporting, cultural andsocial carnival.

    3RD KITSA WINNER

The ALeagues firstfan-designed kit inspiresthe supporters, but theplayers have a grey day.By Robinho

eferring to football strips, Martin Tyleronce said if you look great, you feel greatand if you feel great y ou are more likelyto play great, or words to that effect.

The Heart players certainly looked great andplayed great(ly) in their new charcoal-colouredkit, but could not nish in front of goal and onedefensive lapse in concentration in the 89thminute gifted the league leaders an undeservedwin. Not the kits fault, surely?

Remember when Manchester United playedSouthampton in the grey kit they couldntsee? It was April 1996, and Southamptonblitzed the Red Devils 3-0 by half-time. Left-winger Lee Sharpe recalled his gaffers reaction, saying: The manager just stormed in and saidGet that kit off, youre getting changed. Thosewere the rst words he said at half-time.

Our results had been poor whenever wewore it, and we certainly never played in itagain.

Heart will never play in their grey kit againeither. But not because they failed to see eachother on the eld, or for superstitious reasons,or that they eventually lost. More importantly, unlike the United kit, Heart looked magnicentin their grey shirts, white shorts and grey sockswith red and white turn-downs.

Third kits have always been questionable.More recently they have been a way for clubsto leverage merchandising sales. The Heartthird kit is the culmination of a club initiativein conjunction with new apparel partner ISC,which offered supporters the chance to be partof the on-eld team and submit their designfor a Third Jersey. The winning design wouldbe worn by Heart during the Central CoastMariners home game only, and a limited numberof shirts would be available for fans to buy fromHeart merchandising outlets.

After the announcement of the competitionlast year, both the Yarraside and Red andWhite Unite forums* were peppered with fansshirts ideas, with charcoal grey - the Yarrasideadopted colour - featuring in many solutions. The club Facebook page displayed dozens ofthe entrants and three shirts, by Heart membersSteve Forbes, Sam Adra and Maxim Shevchuk, were eventually chosen by the club as nalists. The nal showcase was then judged by a panelincluding then captain Simon Colosimo andSocceroo legend John Aloisi, I suspect with theapproval of ISC.

Forbes was the winner and had been anearly front-runner on the Heart social mediapages. He had been designing shirts before thecompetition was announced.

Forbes explains: My shirt design started 12months before the clubs announcement, on asupporters forum discussion around potentialsponsors for the club, throwing around ideasabout who the future sponsor would be after amove from Reebok. During this conversation Imade up around 12 to 15 examples of what eachshirt would look like - whether it was Adidas, Nike,Reebok, Puma, or even Errea. One of them in

particular was very popular from the start, and sowhen the competition was announced I already

had a shirt available and ready for submission.Originally, it was to replace the away strip to

provide more contrast to the home strip by usinggrey and red instead of white and red. I alsothought that using a red and white dual sash was

respectful to the original away shirt, and alsomade reference to the red and white stripes of thehome shirt.

When the third strip competition wasannounced, I decided to make a few tweaks tosuit the ISC template. I changed the collar, as wellas changing the Westpac logo to their traditionalred and white colours. My design was one ofthree nalist designs - both of which would have

been deserving winners - but in the end I waslucky enough to win the competition and have myshirt worn against the Central Coast in January.

The produced shirt looks amazing - I was quiteimpressed how well ISC have kept to my design.Often these kinds of things need a few tweaks,

but theyve done a really good job to stay true tothe design. Im really excited to see it used in the

game. Hopefully it has good luck! The shirt did not prove to be lucky on the

eld in that single game, but the kit has inspiredthe fans, with the rst 150 limited edition shirtsselling in 36 hours online, and a further 100being made available for the CCM game. ScottMunn explained that the small manufacturingrun of 250 (plus 50 for the players) meant that itcame with the hefty price tag of $130. He alsoindicated that the competition may run againnext year, so be inspired and s tart designingearly.

    * Yarraside and Red and White Unite forumsare now united under one banner atmhfcsupporters.com
