What is schizophrenia ?

The word schizophrenia comes from the

Greek word skhizein meaning "to split"

and the Greek word Phrenos (phren)

meaning "diaphragm, heart or mind"

Definition of schizophrenia ?

Schizophrenia is “split mind,” referring

to a split from reality that shows itself in

disorganized thinking, disturbed

perceptions, and inappropriate emotions

and actions.

Symptoms of schizophrenia :

Positive Symptoms

1. Hallucinations: when you see things is not really

2. Delusions: when someone believes something that

is not true.

3. Thought disorders: it is unusual way of thinking.

4. Movement disorders: A person with a movement

disorder may repeat certain motions over and over.

Negative symptoms

1. "Flat affect" (a person's face does not move

or he or she talks in a dull or monotonous

voice).

2. Lack of pleasure in everyday life.

3. Lack of ability to begin and sustain planned

activities.

4. Speaking little, even when forced to

interact.

Cognitive symptoms

1. Poor "executive functioning" (the ability to

understand information and use it to make

decisions).

2. Trouble in focusing or paying attention.

3. Problems with "working memory" (the

ability to use information immediately

after learning it).

Medication for the treatment of schizophrenia

Although there is no cure for schizophrenia, it is successfully treatable with a combination of antipsychotic medications and supportive counseling.

Studies show that while approximately 70% of patients improve on these drugs, about 25% show only minimal improvement

and about 5% actually deteriorate.

schizophrenia, including paranoid,

catatonic, undifferentiated, and residual.

Schizophrenia usually strikes young

people as they are maturing into

adulthood.
