    dewpoint

Thermal bridges are a requent cause o increased heat and energy loss, dampness and mould ormation.

The problem arises particularly on cantilevered elements such as balconies. The Schck Isokorb provides construction

experts with an eective countermeasure, not only by thermally separating element rom one another, but also acting

as a structural component. This is why it is reerred to as a load-bearing thermal insulation element. I the Schck

Isokorb didnt already exist it would have to be invented!

    What is a thermal bridge?

Thermal bridges are areas in the external envelope

where, due to material and/or design, a greater

outward fow o heat occurs than in adjacent areas. A

distinction is made between geometrical thermal

bridges (the principle o increased surace area with

cooling n eect) and material thermal bridges

    (coupled components with diering thermal

conduction). In practice there is oten a mix o both

eects. The classic example o this is the balcony slab.

    The dangers o thermal bridges

In the area o the thermal bridge the temperature o

inside suraces drops to such a degree that during the

cold months there is a serious risk that the

temperature will all below the dewpoint. This leads

to condensation and mould growth, which is one o

the major sources o respiratory allergies such as

    asthma.

    Expensive side eects

Due to the increased outward fow o heat around the

thermal bridge more heating energy has to be used in

order to maintain a constant room temperature.

Thermal bridges can be responsible or up to a third

    higher energy requirements.

The Schck Isokorb is a noticeable actor in energy savings.

Thermal imaging dramatically demonstrates the increased outfow o heat.

A dramatic temperature decrease will result in condensation and mould

    growth.

    MODULE

The leader in thermal and sound insulation. The new Schck Isokorb XT with HTE Module.

    Optimised HTE module

Schck has once again improved the time-tested HTE

(High Thermal Eciency) module that has been used

or many years: A new recipe or the heavy-duty

micro-steel ber concrete with the aggregate

Kronolith2) increases the thermal insulation o the HTE

module by more than 40% with a same cross section.

The new HTE module also keeps its impressive load

capacity and its time-tested saety eatures. The result

is a excellent combination o high load capacity and

optimized thermal insulation. This innovative solution

is one o the keys to the low thermal conductivity o

    the Schck Isokorb XT.

    Optimised shear orce rods

Compared to the Isokorb with an insulation thickness

o 80 mm, the angle o inclination o the shear rods is

less but with equal load bearing capacity. For

    improved impact sound insulation.

    MODULE

The Schck Isokorb, with an insulation thickness o 80 mm or 120 mm and HTE modules, oers guaranteed saety

and eciency. With its perected and detailed solutions, there are many engineering, design and handling advantages

    or the construction site.

    Installation-optimised

Whether it's on the building site or at the precaster:

No more snags when installing into the reinorcement.

This is ensured by particular product components in

the Isokorb. With Schck Isokorb, the xing o the

tension rods is not done by welding distributor, as

beore, but is instead released with a plastic bars

prole, which also shields the re protection plates.

A clever clip technology in the HTE module contained

with in the insulating material ensures proper xing

o the shear rods and compression modules. The

special orm o the shear rods and the fush

arrangement o the HTE compression modules with

in the insulation saves additional time and costs in

installation in any situation. This has also been

    veried in case studies.

Thermal break or timber beam foors.

In many old buildings the intermediate foor is a timber

beam structure. To produce a thermally separated

balcony connection the foor structure is partially

exposed in the connection area. A steel prole with a

aceplate is then xed to the wooden beams. The

Schck Isokorb KST is connected to the aceplate at the

point where the acade is penetrated. The steel

structure or the new balcony is mounted rom outside.

The vertical loads in the connection area are passed

into the wall through new supports realised by cast

concrete. This ensures an optimal thermal break

between the balcony and the slab.

85% o existing buildings are poorly insulated or not insulated at all. It is thereore necessary to upgrade older

buildings using extensive thermal insulation measures. Preventing thermal bridges at the balcony connection is

critical, i the solution is to meet ull compliance with the Building Regulations. Incorporating the Isokorb at the

balcony connection means that it is possible to guarantee the same high standard o thermal perormance or balcony

renovation work as was previously only available or new buildings. Experienced structural engineers rom our Design

Support Department are on hand to provide any help you may require in developing specic proposals or

    reurbishment projects.

Thermal break between steel balcony and reinorced concrete inner slab.

Simple solution or reinorced concrete slabs.

When dealing with an existing load bearing RC slab,

the rst step is to cut the concrete back where the

balcony has to be connected, exposing the

reinorcement. Ater that a steel angle plate (see

illustration) is xed on site. Concrete is poured into

the cut-back area to complete and strengthen the

bond between the steel components and the existing

slab, creating a load bearing connection. The thermal

break is ormed by tting the type KST Isokorb to the

steel angle plate. This creates two options or the

external connection a steel balcony using a ront

plate, or a concrete balcony, using a ront plate with

    pre-welded tension bars.

Argument in avour o high quality

    construction

    Dampness is inevitable on construction

sites, not least because o rain.

Normal porous bricks/blocks soak up this

    moisture and store it.

Ater the plaster is on the walls and the

    temperature inside rises, the dampness

    then starts to seep out.

The building then takes, on average, up to

three years to nally dry out

    (see illustration).

    Results: Damp building materials, poor

What's on the outside has to reect what'son the inside.

    During installation, every detail counts.

    Subject: Warranty obligation

"I a contractor wishes to avoid any resulting restrictions o use or damages - and thus any warranty

obligation - he or she must explain to the client the risks associated with the concerned materials or

methods, including any limits to what is known, and ensure the cleint's consent. This is all the more

advisable considering that when there is uncertainty concerning the risks o use, it must be announced

    as a structural deect."

    OLG Munich, BauR 1981, 577

They're the same! Or maybe not?

A look at practical practice reveals the ollowing:

Planners careully choose building components in

accordance with the objective , and based on

knowledge and calculations. And then? When the

time comes to begin construction, in many cases

other products which were not specied in the contract

end up being used. This way o doing things is

problematic, however, as is clearly indicated by the

OLG Munich judgment of July 9, 1983:

"I the likelihood o damage arising rom an installed

product that does not conorm to the technical

specications is even one percent, then equivalence

    shall no longer be present".

Specied materials and products should thereore

also be used or this reason as well. A substitution is

only permissible in cases where the alternate product isat least equivalent or better, or i the client provides

    written consent to the change.

For decades steel has played an important role as reinorcement in concrete. There are, however, applications which cry

out or an alternative. This is where Schck ComBAR, a glass-bre reinorced polymer, comes into its own. Its unique

material properties are similar to those o steel, but Schck ComBAR is resistant to chemicals and is neither

magnetically nor electrically conductive. In addition, it is easily machined. As a result, Schck ComBAR is not only well

suited or long-term application, but also or temporary installation. It is a building material with entirely new

capabilities: a new world or engineers and planners.

    thermal conductivity o 0.5 W/mK (by comparison:

    Steel = 60 W/mK, stainless steel = 17 W/mK) and

has double the characteristic tensile strength.

    The better solution

A thermal anchor replaces the stainless steel lattice

girder reinorcement in core-insulated sandwich and

double walls, and optimizes the entire production

process. Thanks to its special characteristics, Schck

ComBAR Thermo-Anchor not only acts as a connect-
