County College of Morris Foundation


At County College of Morris, we are proud of your mission to offer our students an outstanding educa-tion at an affordable price. Our faculty provides the teaching and experience that positively affect lives forever. Our students gain the quality education necessary to realize their dreams. And our college con-tinues to evolve to meet the changing needs of our community.

Over the past year, we enacted more than 20 new articulation agreements to make it easier for CCM stu-dents to transfer to four-year colleges or universities. We were selected as one of only 10 colleges nation-wide to take part in the Bridging Cultures program to better incorporate diversity and democratic think-ing into teaching and learning. This past fall, we launched the Northern New Jersey Health Professions Pathway to provide qualified low-income individuals with a tuition-free education to take advantage of job growth opportunities in health care.

The face of our campus has also seen many major improvements. In September, we cut the ribbon on our new LEED Gold Certified Landscape and Horticulture Technology building, our first environmen-tally sustainable facility. We purchased a building in Randolph 675 Route 10 East that will serve as our temporary library while the Masten Learning Resource Center undergoes a two-year renovation. Eventually, the Route 10 facility will serve other academic needs and will give CCM a presence on a major area highway. With funding from the County of Morris Improvement Authority, solar panels were placed over five of our parking lots to meet about 45 percent of our annual energy needs. And, thanks to the passage of the Building Our Future bond act, CCM will be able to begin construction of an exten-sion to our existing Music Technology Building as well as an upgrade to our electrical- and mechanical-engineering laboratories.

These are just some of the ways in which CCM is growing to meet the demands and take advantage of the opportunities of the 21st Century assuring that our facilities are second to none as we continue to expand and improve our academic courses and programs.

Gala Chairs Welcome

Welcome to the 2013 County College of Morris Foundation Scholarship Gala. We thank you for supporting this event. Each year, our Gala affords the opportunity to gather together, enjoy great dining, music, dancing and camaraderie. But it is also critically important in raising funds for our scholarship program a program that enables more than 200 students each year to start right at CCM. With the cost of college tuition rising each year even at community colleges your support is critical in enabling many of our students to achieve their dream of a college education and a productive future.

County College of Morris is much more than just a college. It is an integral part of the life, culture and economy of Morris County. While providing outstanding, affordable education, CCM continues to serve as a hub for professional train-ing and business outreach, a home for the performing arts, and a facility that is often utilized by the countys political and non-profit community. One could not imagine Morris County without CCM.

Our annual Gala is an opportunity to celebrate and showcase the best of our college. Tonight, youll hear from Lina Maria Alfonso 13, who will represent our scholarship award stu-dents. Lina will transfer to Rutgers after she graduates next month and her ambition is to eventually become a physi-cian. In addition to Lina, youll enjoy a selection from Legally Blonde (our spring 2013 musical) by our Performing Arts students, and many of those students will also help display tonights silent auction items.

We congratulate tonights Leadership Award winner, Dr. Ralph Izzo, as well as our Alumni Award recipients, and we extend our thanks to the 2013 Gala Committee for its hard work in putting this event together.

Ralph IzzoChairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Public Service Enterprise Group Incorporated

Ralph Izzo is a nationally recognized leader within the utility industry as well as the public policy arena. He is frequently asked to testify before Congress and speak to organizations on matters pertaining to national energy policy.

Mr. Izzos career began as a research scientist at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory and he has published or presented over 35 papers on magnetohydrodynamic modeling. He received his B.S. and M.S. in mechanical engineering and his Ph.D. in applied physics from Columbia University. He also received an MBA from the Rutgers Graduate School of Management. He is listed in numerous editions of Whos Who and has been the recipient of many national fellow-ships, awards and honorary degrees.

Mr. Izzo serves as chair of Rutgers University Board of Governors and on the board of directors for the N.J Chamber of Commerce, the N.J. Utilities Association, the Edison Electric Institute, the Nuclear Energy Institute, the Institute for Nuclear Power Operations, the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, and The Center for Energy Workforce Development. He is also a member of the Columbia University School of Engineering Board of Visitors and Princeton Universitys Adlinger Center for Energy and the Environment Advisory Council, as well as a member of the Visiting Committee for the Department of Nuclear Engineering at MIT.

This past fall, he provided outstanding volunteer leadership in the successful effort to pass the Building Our Future Bond Act an initiative that will make available $750 million to our states colleges for critically-needed facilities upgrades.

2013 Alumni StarsThe County College of Morris Foundation, along with the CCM Alumni Association, inaugurated its annual Alumni Awards in 2003. Since then, more than 65 outstanding graduates have been added to the Alumni Hall of Fame. Tonight, we celebrate five more awardees for their achievements.

The Alumni Award Recognition Program acknowledges those who meet specific criteria, including personal achievement, dedi-cation to serving the public good, service to a segment of the college, and finally, for exceptional overall achievement in their professions, the Alumnus/a of the Year Award.

The Alumni Association Hall of Fame salutes this tenth class of distinguished inductees. Their achievements, service and dedi-cation to their professional lives and to the community make all of us at the County College of Morris proud.

AWARD CRITERIA

Alumni Achievement Award Specific, outstanding achievements and/or accomplishments in their profession. Have received honors from associations

or employers, or whose work has proven beneficial to a pronounced segment of society.

Alumni Service Award Recognition of outstanding service to the County College of Morris Alumni Association or some other segment of the

College.

Alumni Humanitarian Award Dedication to humanitarianism and serving the public good. Unique contribution to society or the community. Lengthy

volunteer service to community.

Alumnus/a of the Year Award Highest honor given by the Alumni Association that recognizes the exceptional achievements of graduates of the College.

ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR AWARD

With more than twenty years of experience in the telecom-munications industry, Anthony Leggio, Jr. 77, Regional Sales Vice President and Corporate Director, is responsible for lead-ing a team of sales, engineering and consulting professionals in addressing the global communications networking needs of

AT&Ts largest multi-national customers in the Northeast.

Anthony began his career with AT&T in April, 2002 as a Sales Center Vice President for the financial segment in the New York City market.

Three years later, he was promoted and assumed his current responsibilities. During his tenure at AT&T, his expertise in sales leadership, network operations, business strategy, equity and debt funding, and start-up business development has led to the companys growth and development. In recognition of his contributions and status as one of the companys top 1% of Directors, he was selected to join the Officer Candidate Program.

Prior to joining AT&T, Anthony was President of Field and Sales Operations for Focal Communications where he identified, recruited and trained a nationwide sales organization and customer care team that grew revenues from $0 to $400 million in less than four years.

Still earlier in his career, Anthony was with the Global Accounts Division of Sprint Business, rising to the position of Sales Vice President for the eastern region national accounts at Sprint PCS.

After graduating from CCM with an AAS in Computer Information Systems, Anthony earned a BS degree from New Jerseys Rowan University and an MBA from Saint Josephs University in Philadelphia. He is a Board Member of the Liberty USO and the Villanova School of Business CIO Council. He is also active in supporting the American Cancer Society in the South Jersey/Philadelphia area.

Anthony, his wife Theresa, and their two daughters live in Lumberton Township, New Jersey.


ALUMNI ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Erin Fowler 97, RN, MS, works in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response and Predecessor Organizations for the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). In her role as Senior Policy Advisor, she is responsible for the development and enhancement of activities to

improve public health preparedness and emergency response. This includes bioterrorism preparedness, medical countermeasure distri-

bution, all-hazard preparedness and response, medical surge capacity, and emergency policy and procedures.

Erin monitors healthcare policy trends and conditions regarding public health and medical pre-paredness, and recommends and executes policy and program changes necessary to keep pace with international, national, State, regional, and local developments. She also develops strategies for identifying and resolving complex preparedness and response issues by recommending courses of action and facilitating communications to move policy positions forward.

In recognition of her leadership and talent, in 2012, Erin was selected to serve for six months as the chief of staff to the Interim Deputy Assistant Secretary during a transition in leadership.

Erin first joined the Office of the Secretary in June 2002 as a Presidential Management Fellow per-forming a number of planning, preparedness and response activities. Part of her duties through the 11 years with the organization included leading a staff of 35 employees and administering a $5.6 million annual operating budget. Earlier in her career, she worked as a Critical Care Registered Nurse in several hospitals and medical centers.

Erin, who was on the waiting list for admission to CCM, found out just a day before classes started that a place had opened up. She didnt think she was ready, but moved forward anyway and was glad she did. I found the nursing program incredibly rewarding and challenging. The instructors were attentive and patient, and my fellow students were helpful, supportive and engaging. Ill always remember the lessons I was taught about respect and compassion for patients and for people in gen-eral, and its is because of the people at CCM I learned those lessons, she commented.

After completing her CCM AAS degree in Nursing, Erin attended the College of St. Elizabeth, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. She earned a Master of Science degree in Healthcare Policy from University of Maryland at Baltimore.


ALUMNI HUMANITARIAN AWARD

Scott Kansky 97 is currently employed by Atlantic Ambulance Corporation (AAC) as a Flight Paramedic. In this role, he provides emergency care and transportation to the critically sick and injured in a Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) setting. He is experienced in the startup and development of all AAC HEMS

bases. Earlier in his career, from 1992 2006, Scott served as a Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic with the AAC.

Scott retired as a Lieutenant from the Denville Township Police Department in July 2011, with 21 years of service. During his career with the

Police Department, he supervised the Patrol and Administrative Divisions. Among his many accom-plishments, he is credited for expanding the Administrative Division, coordinating the transition of the division within the department, and managing its budget.

Scott also was responsible for overseeing the police computer network, and for procuring depart-mental equipment through the approved quote/bid process. Scott served as the Deputy Coordinator of the Office of Emergency Management for the Township and as the Department Open Public Records Act Officer.

His role as a Fleet Marine Force Corpsman providing emergency and routine healthcare for the US Marine Corp helped to lay the foundation for his career.

Scott is also a 30-year volunteer with Morris Minute Men Emergency Medical Services, currently serv-ing as the nonprofits President. In recognition of his service to the community, he was recognized with the Knights of Columbus Emergency Services Award for 2008/2009.

After receiving his Associate of Science Degree from CCM, Scott went on to earn a BS degree in crim-inal justice from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.

Scott spoke highly of his employer and CCM. I was fortunate enough to work for the Denville Township Police, an employer that recognized the importance of higher education. Thanks to a tuition reimbursement program and the requirement of a bachelors degree for advancement to lieutenant, pursuing a college degree became part of my career plan. CCM was the first step on this path. My experiences and the knowledge I gained at CCM, particularly within the Criminal Justice Department, prepared me for Rutgers, and proved to be invaluable to my professional develop-ment.


ALUMNI SERVICE AWARD

The Linne Family has made its commitment to CCM a family affair. Christopher Linne 84, his wife Jan, and daughter Jennifer 02 established the Linne Family Scholarship through the CCM Foundation. The Linne Family Scholarship supports a full-time out-of-county/state student majoring in Business Administration or Criminal Justice who demonstrates

need and is planning to transfer to a bachelors degree program upon graduation.

Chris and his family choose to give back to CCM because of the solid education they received. Chris attended CCM

as a part-time student, earned an AS in Criminal Justice, and then went on to earn his B.A. in Sociology/Criminal Justice and a

Masters in Leadership and Public Administration at Centenary College. He is currently enrolled in the Medical Humanities Doctoral Program at Drew University.

Chris is a retired police officer who now teaches Criminal Justice at Centenary College in Hackettstown, New Jersey. He began his law enforcement career in 1977 as a municipal police officer and detective with the Washington Township Police Department. In 1985, he moved to the Morris County Prosecutors Office, from which he retired in 2002 as Captain of Investigations.

In 2002, Chris was appointed by Bishop Rodimer and Bishop Serratelli to the Diocese of Patersons Diocesan Review Board, where he was responsible for reviewing allegations against religious and lay persons within the Diocese. In addition to teaching at Centenary, he also serves as Secretary of the Board of Trustees for the Center for Evaluation and Counseling, a nonprofit mental health agency.

Jan worked at home to raise their daughter Jennifer. Once Jennifer entered school Jan took a posi-tion in retail at Reynolds Brothers and later worked in human resources at Hackettstown Regional Medical Center.

Jennifer Linne graduated from CCM with an ASdegree in Business Administration. She was a recipi-ent of three scholarships and honored as a Star at the CCM Foundations Reaching for the Stars Scholarship Gala in 2002. Jennifer earned both a BS in Business Administration with high honors and an MS in Management/Human Resources Management from the College of St. Elizabeth.

She joined the CCM Alumni Board in 2010, volunteering for many events including commence-ment, the Foundation Scholarship Gala, and the Morristown Festival on the Green. She also served on the Alumni Scholarship Committee.

Jennifer worked as an administrative assistant for the Alumnae/I Association of the College of St. Elizabeth. Earlier in her career she worked in Human Resources for Safilo USA and Drew University. She was also an adjunct instructor at Centenary College. Her volunteer endeavors include the Alumnae/I Association of the College of St. Elizabeth and the Society for Human Resource Management, Morris County Chapter.

Message FromThanks to the generous support of hundreds of donors, and the dedicated work of the CCM Foundation staff, our Board of Directors and the Trustees of the college, the Foundation enjoyed its second most-successful year in its history in 2011-12. Gifts totaled $1,035,706, surpassed only by the $1.1 million realized in 2005-2006. The total raised represents nearly double what was raised last year. Individual giving (from friends, board members, retirees and the CCM staff) totaled $263,427 a 26% increase over last year. This years special focus was the Visioning the Future cam-paign to create a new Media Center (broadcasting studio) at CCM. At years end, the campaign stood at $250,000 toward our $1 million goal. The majority of the $115,286 raised for programs were dedicated to that facility. As always, our scholarship program remains the primary beneficiary of our fundraising. In 2011-12, $735,322 was raised to provide financial support for more than 200 students in disciplines ranging from nursing to criminal justice to the performing arts.

This past year, through the efforts of the Foundation, $538,089 was raised in government and pri-vate foundation grants. The beneficiaries included our Summer Academy, the Teen Arts Festival, CCM Celebrates Seniors and the Center for Teaching Excellence. A special thank you to the cur-rent and former members of our Foundation board and college Board of Trustees who contributed $44,530 this year, setting an example for giving by the entire CCM community.

This coming year, well be embarking on a number of important initiatives to support the college, including our Visioning the Future campaign as well as our Plant a Tree at CCM program that will give donors an opportunity to name a new tree on campus for themselves, their family or a loved one.

On behalf of all of at the Foundation, we thank you for your support over the past year. The strong commitment of our alumni, area corporations and the community at large allows us to continue to provide an outstanding educational experience for all of our students.
