    Editor’s NotesRoxi Ko

Hey everyone! Hope everyone has been having a great year so far, I’m so excited for summer! I recently went on a

backpacking trip and it got me so ready for more adventures in the Pacific Northwest. I can’t wait to see what the rest of this year will bring!

President’s Message By Sally Villaluz Ghormley ’79

    Hello Grizzlies!

We’re half way through 2019— it’s been a great one so far.

Our recent QA Annual Meeting & Luncheon in April was a great hit. It included QAHS’s 110th Anniversary/ Birthday celebration. Read the details on p. 8 – Go Grizzlies!

We held the election of board members in which all board members whose terms were up were unanimously re-elected. I want to thank all of the board for continuing to volunteer.

The raffle baskets were a hit. Thank you to all who donate the gift baskets and thank you to everyone who took part in our luncheon. At our events we sell QA memorabilia, the proceeds from these sales go toward funding our Scholarship Program as well as KUAY costs and other operating expenses.

In May we re-elected our association officers, except for Secretary, where Mary Cooke ’79 is taking over for Maggie Birch ’64. My thanks to Maggie for her great service.

Save the date for our upcoming annual picnic on Sunday, August 25th at Gasworks Park.

The Event Committee is planning our first new fall event, an all class Alumni Homecoming Dance on

October 12, 2019 at the Ballard Elks on Shilshole, with the DJ Ron Bolin. See the story on page 11.

    Acknowledgments

Every year we thank our alumni board and other volunteers who keep us going. None of our alums are paid for what they do. All Grizzlies owe these people many thanks. Without them there is no alumni association. We also acknowledge the following supporters. We need all of you. Please join in!

We urge every classmate to consider attending at least one of these events, and hopefully all three. Long-time friends and memories we share are especially valued at this time in our lives. For further information, contact, [email protected] or 206-232-8096.

55 Years for Class of ’64By Helena (Butterfield) Rowse ’64

The ’64 Class Reunion Team is looking forward to catching up with classmates after 5 years, at the Annual QAHSAA picnic on August 25th at Gas Works and on September 7th for the 55th Grizzly Cheer at Channel Marker Pub in Edmonds. Please come and visit.

Golden Anniversary for Class of ’69

The Class of 1969 50th anniversary reunion will be held Saturday, Sept. 21, 2019 at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel in Seattle. Details are in the Reunion Calendar on page 13. The full story was in the last issue of the KUAY, where we failed to correctly attribute the story to Tracy (Poe)

Rowher ’69 who was the actual author. Our apologies. This golden reunion will be held where the class held their 1969 senior prom.

Spring Luncheon and Annual MeetingBy Claudia (Kettles) Lovgren ’65

The QAHS spring luncheon and annual meeting was held on April 27th at the Seattle Yacht Club on a Seattle spring weather day (sun/rain/sun/rain). All the tables were filled by Grizzly alums and teachers, soon to be well-fed.

Teachers attending were Bob Brubaker, with his daughter Shawna (Brubaker ) Davis ’79 and Dr. Dan Walther, with his wife Ann.

Following the social hour of chat and memorabilia viewing, board President Sally Villaluz Ghormley ’79 led the singing of “Happy 110th Birthday QAHS”.

Treasurer Claudia (Kettles) Lovgren ’65 opened the annual meeting, asking all to note the treasurer’s report in the programs.Board members up for re-election were: Sally Villauz Ghormley ’79, Jeanne (Hayes)Warren ’61, Jim LePenske ’62, and Kim Turner ’61. Claudia asked for nominations from the floor, of which there were none. All were re-elected by unanimous vote.

Kim Turner ’61 spoke of QAHS notable 1913 grad Emily Lindsay Squier, (1892 -1941) writer and author. She later

changed her name, for writing purposes, to Emma-Lindsay Squier. She was in the first four year graduating class of QAHS, 1909-1913. Kim owns one of her books, “The Bride of the Sacred Well and Other Tales From Mexico” by Squier. The bookplate for that copy was designed by Northwest artist Kenneth Callahan for previous owners James and Teresa Stevens and signed by Emma. James Stevens was a noted writer of folklore, including his work on Paul Bunyan. One of Squier’s stories was the basis for the 1936 film “The Dancing Pirate”.

Raffle basket winners were: Gary Christopher ’67, Tim Moody ’66, Joanne (Drost) Ells ’51, Bob Maurer ’66, Patty( Wilson) Faller ’58, Maggie (Nichols) Birch ’64, Shirley( Niebuhr) Kankelfritz ’61 , Claudia (Kettles) Lovgren ’65 and teacher Dan Walther.

Farewell with Grizzlies singing (yes bears can sing) the Queen Anne Fight Song along with the Alma Mater.

Hope to see you there next year!

From the ArchivesBy John Hennes ’51

Before today’s High School Memorial Stadium was opened in 1947, Queen Anne and the other Seattle high schools played their football games at Civic Field. The field, located in the same place as today’s stadium, was part of a complex of Civic Auditorium, Civic Ice Arena and Civic Field.

Civic Field was opened in 1928 and ten years later the KUAY Weekly, in October 1938, noted in the story below that the opening needed some student labor.

    Boys Picked Rocks

Just 10 years ago last week the Civic stadium was opened. But did you know that the field was paved with doughnuts?

It seems that the city funds at that time did not include the final surfacing of the field. Volunteers from each of the nine high schools swarmed down to the stadium one Saturday and cleared the field free of rocks and sticks. The motive for this activity was in the fact that Marston “Put” Turner, a Queen Anne 1916 grad, drove his truck laden with bakery goods down into the scene of action and fed the laboring boys.

Spring Q.A. Invitational GolfOn April 28, 2019 the Whitehorse Golf Club in Kingston, WA hosted nearly two dozen KUAY alumni and friends. Thanks to Doug Knight ’53 and the Lorentz brothers, Don ’60 and Doug ’72, we had lots of competition. As usual, everybody won a “great” prize, courtesy of Roger Jensen’s ’61 “Golf Garage.” The closest to the pin contest was won by either Karl Kollen ’59 or Roy Koval ’59, but since they didn’t stick around, Alden Graebner ’63 pocketed their prize.

A New Day for Alumni Scholarshipscontinued from page 1

For this reason, beginning in 2020 the alumni board has voted to raise the individual scholarship amount to $1000. This means we will be giving fewer total awards. The number of awards will be decided each year by the alumni association board, but each student will get a little bigger boost. Our goal has always been to help as many descendants of alums as possible. That is still our goal.

In the long term, the scholarship donations that are not used each year accumulate in a QA Scholarship Endowment Fund that is intended to provide ongoing scholarships commemorating our school, even after the alumni association has faded away. That task is left for the future alums to decide, but today we declare a new day.

Grizzlies Out After Five Monthscontinued from page 1

We appreciate donations to offset our costs. We will provide you with an alibi for your five month disappearance.

New Fall Event! Alumni Homecoming Dance Sat., Oct. 12, 2019 By Mary Cooke ’79

The QAHSAA wanted to do something new and different this year for our fall event.

I don’t know about you, but when I think of Fall and High School; I think of Homecoming.

The big game, the dance, the Mum-O-Grams….Happy memories of being back at school, settled in to the routine of a new year and knowing enough people you never really knew before to make a dance exciting.

This year we will be celebrating our Grizzly camaraderie on the shores of Shilshole at the spectacular Ballard Elks Lodge, 6411 Seaview Ave NW, Seattle, WA 98117.

We will start with a get reacquainted mixer (read as “put on our glasses and read each other’s names tags”) from 6 to 7pm. Then DJ Ron Bolin will take the mike and get the party started!

Tickets are $20 in advance; you can order online at www.qagrizzlies.org or use the coupon on page 14. Tickets will be $25 at the door. There will be a no-host bar (cash only) and refreshments will be provided.

Come on down! Hope to see you there, dancing the night away!

Recently, my wife and I went to New Mexico and a person told us about the Vietnam Memorial at Angelfire, in New Mexico (www.angelfirememorial.com). It is very impressive and I urge people to look it up. In their library they have bios on hundreds of service personnel that gave their lives during the Vietnam War. I, of course, looked up Jack O’Brien and his bio was not there. I am now seeking information and pictures about Jack to send to the memorial. If you know family members, friends or any other contacts that could help me locate information, please contact me. I would like to make sure that this Queen Anne Grizzly is given his due recognition at that memorial.

We alerted Nick to what little info we have in our alumni website www.qagrizzlies.org (click on “history” and look for “memorials”). Perhaps there are classmates out there who have more information they can share with Nick and with us, e.g. where did he get his 2nd Lt commission, what was his wife’s name, etc. ? It has been fifty plus years, yet our ties with our veterans will linger for the rest of our years. Please help if you can.
