Student Loans – is it possible to graduate without debt?
Average student debt in Canada is currently $30,000
It takes an average of 10 years to pay off debt after post-secondary graduation
Budget… Budget… Budget -> rent, phone plan, groceries, tuition, books, car sharing etc.
Ask your parents if they plan on contributing to your educationDo they have RESP’s?
Check out StudentAidBC.ca to see if you qualify for student loans
Government Loans vs Bank Loans Government Loans Private Loans (Bank loan, personal line of
credit) • Funding for students is based on
financial need and parents’ income • A personal line of credit that helps
students pay for their post-secondary tuition and student expenses as needed
• Must be paid back with interest afterstudent graduates
• Make interest payments while you are still in school
• Must re-apply and re-qualify every single year!
• Students can apply any time during the year
• More information available at StudentAidBC.ca
• A supporting borrower (parent) is usually required for undergraduates
Only Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada are eligible for these loans
Avoid Credit Card Debt !!
• Financial institutions make millions of $$$ in profit from credit card debts
• If you pay just the minimum payment, it can take decades to pay off
• Be careful that you're not overspending to live a lifestyle you can't afford
• Paying credit card balances in full each month allows you to avoid paying any interest at all
• Don’t fall into the credit card trap…
Studies show consumers spend more when paying with credit cards
