We strongly recommend that parents arrange a visit to meet the Headmaster and be taken on a tour of the school. This can be an individual appointment, or you may wish to attend one of our Open Events the details of which you can find on our website.

Your child must be registered with St Andrew’s Prep before you can apply for a scholarship. Please complete a registration form and pay the registration fee of £75. This does not commit you to take up a place for your child.

Deposits are required nine months before a child enters the school or just prior to a child joining if submitting a late registration. Only when the deposit of £750 is paid is a child committed to the school and their place confirmed.

This booklet, our scale of charges, application forms and registration forms can all be downloaded from our website.

    Scholarships

St Andrew’s Prep believes that excellence should be recognised and therefore scholarships are awarded to children who show outstanding potential either academically or in art, drama, music, performing arts or sport. These awards are not means-tested. For those children who are awarded a scholarship at the school, St Andrew’s Prep believes that the major contribution it can make to a scholar is the development of their specialism through a tailored provision and support programme throughout their time at theschool. Scholarships are offered to exceptionally gifted and talented pupils and the scholarships awarded are a public recognition of this excellence. They are prestigious awards made as a result of strictly moderated open competition and assessment and they carry with them privilege and responsibility.

Assessments are open to both external candidates and internal candidates (pupils who currently attend St Andrew’s Prep). External applicants must complete a registration form (downloadable from the Admissions section of the school website) and pay a £75 registration fee before applying for a scholarship.

The number and size of scholarships is at the discretion of the Headmaster and merit shown by candidates.

Academic scholarships are available for entry into Years 3 to 7 for external candidates and for entry into Years 5 and 7 for internal candidates.

Art, Music, Performing Arts and Sport scholarships are available for entry into Years 5, 6 and 7 for external candidates and for entry into Years 5 and 7 for internal candidates.

Drama scholarships are available for entry into Year 7 for external and internal candidates.

Scholarship awards for successful candidates will take effect from September 2020. Candidates will take part in the assessments in the spring term before the year of entry. The majority of the scholarships awarded will be between five and 20 percent, although in very exceptional circumstances, a more substantial award may be given. Where parental financial circumstances justify it, the fee reduction component of scholarships may be enhanced by means-tested bursaries* (see Bursaries section below). The funds available for scholarships and bursaries are carefully controlled by the Governors.

Candidates will be judged on their merits and St Andrew’s Prep reserves the right not to award any scholarships if there are no candidates of sufficient merit.

    Conditions of Scholarships

We expect scholars to set themselves high standards in the way they conduct themselves, both in and around the school. The example they set will make them natural leaders among their peer group and we hope that they will both enjoy and make the most of the responsibility. A scholarship programme is in place and all scholars will be closely monitored by either the Deputy Head, Head of Art, Head of Drama, Director of Music and Performing Arts or Director of Sport. A Record of Achievement will be kept and Scholars will be set aims and targets at the beginning of each term. Parents will receive a copy of the Record of Achievement at the end of a term. We will be holding a presentation evening for scholars and their parents early in September of the new academic year.

It is generally expected that all scholarships will be held for the duration of the candidate’s career at St Andrew’s Prep. However, all scholarships are reviewed annually and St Andrew’s Prep reserves the right to withdraw scholarships if, in the opinion of the Headmaster and after careful monitoring procedures, the pupil is performing significantly below expectations. The amount of any award is regarded as a confidential matter between the parents and the Headmaster. Parents are expected to respect this confidentiality and any breach of this understanding is likely to lead to the withdrawal of the award.

Scholarships are not transferable to Eastbourne College or any other senior school. Separate assessments take place in Year 8 (occasionally earlier) for entry to senior schools in Year 9. For more information on scholarships to senior schools, please contact the Deputy Head.

Within this booklet there is further information regarding each of the six types of scholarships and application forms. Parents of external and internal candidates should complete the relevant application form and external applicants should also send a confidential reference form for completion to the Head or teacher of their child’s current school. References from out of school clubs and organisations will be welcome from all applicants but, with the exception of sport, are not essential.

    Bursaries

It is important to distinguish between bursaries and scholarships as there is often confusion. Bursaries are separate from scholarships. Bursaries are offered in recognition of financial need and, in some cases, can be added to scholarship award amounts. In this instance, the deadline for bursary applications is Wednesday 20 January 2021.

All bursaries are means-tested according to the guidelines laid down by the Independent School Bursars’ Association and parents are asked to complete a comprehensive financial circumstances form which is available, upon request, from the Registrar. General enquiries should be made to the Registrar, on 01323 744820 or email [email protected], and specific questions regarding bursaries should be made to the Finance Director.

    Frequently Asked Questions...

Does my child need to be registered to apply for any of the scholarships?Yes.Your child must be registered with St Andrew’s Prep and the £75 registration fee received before the scholarship application closing date of Wednesday 20 January. However, only when the deposit of £750 is paid is a child committed to the school and their place confirmed. Deposits are required nine months before a child enters the school or just prior to a child joining if submitting a late registration.

What is a scholarship?A scholarship is the recognition of excellence and academic potential, or potential in another field such as art, drama, music, performing arts or sport, following assessment by St Andrew’s Prep, Scholars receive a reduction on school fees and benefit from the school’s commitment to excellence in all areas of school life. The assessments are open to both external and internal candidates in certain age groups.

Which scholarship should my son or daughter apply for? Some parents of external candidates take advice from their child’s current school, art, music, performing arts or drama teacher or sports coach. However, the Headmaster is happy to give general advice on this. Parents of external candidates can arrange either an individual appointment to visit the school or may attend an Open Event. Internal candidates should speak to the child’s form teacher/tutor, relevant staff member or the Headmaster. Candidates may apply for more than one discipline in the following fields: academic, art, drama, music, performing arts or sport with a maximum of three disciplines in total.

What is the difference between a scholarship and a bursary? Both may give financial assistance but are different in their assessment.

Scholarships are given to pupils who have demonstrated excellence and ability in their chosen discipline regardless of their financial circumstances and are not means-tested.

Bursaries can be given in recognition of financial need and can be applied for by the family of any prospective pupil regardless of ability. The amount of a bursary award is treated on an individual basis , based on the parents financial circumstances.

Bursaries are means-tested, so parents are asked to complete a comprehensive financial circumstances form which is then assessed by the School’s Finance Director.

How much can scholarships be worth? The majority of the scholarships will be between five and twenty percent of school fees although, in really exceptional circumstances, a higher award may be given. Should the fees still be unaffordable, a bursary can also be applied for although the larger of the awards will usually subsume the lower value award.

How many scholarships are awarded each year? There is no fixed number of scholarships given in any discipline each year.

How will my child’s progress be monitored? There is a tailored enrichment programme of support in place which is carefully monitored by the Head of Department or Deputy Head Academic. Records of Achievement are kept and teachers will discuss with a scholar their progress and targets at the beginning and end of each term.

If my child’s main sport is not one of the assessed sports, will this be taken into consideration?Yes, candidates are asked to supply written evidence of non-assessed sports in the form of a reference from the coach and evidence of achievements.
