Moreton First is the preparatory school of Moreton Hall, sharing not only its extensive facilities and subject specialist staff but also its commitment to nurture and celebrate the talents of each child.
We are proud that we offer boys and girls a unique start to their education, ensuring academic rigour goes hand in hand with encouragement to achieve success in all creative and sporting fields.
Pupils in Year 2 looking to join Year 3 in September and pupils currently in Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5 who demonstrate exceptional skills and abilities either academically or in a specific area such as sport, music, art and drama will be considered for a scholarship.
Our scholarship assessments involve children taking part in a variety of subject specific tasks and activities as well as completing tests in Maths and English. The assessments are conducted in an informal way to encourage children to do their best and demonstrate their talents and potential.
This guide provides an overview of the awards and scholarships on offer at Moreton First and key criteria in preparation for the assessment day.

At Moreton First we operate a Scholarship and Awards programme for pupils entering the school from the age of 7. Academic Scholarships are awarded to the top performing pupils in English and Maths.
Academic
As part of the Academic Scholarship pupils will join form classes and experience a day in Moreton First. During the day pupils will be required to sit age appropriate standardised English and Maths tests and will have an informal chat with the Head of Moreton First.
All pupils will be required to present a copy of their most recent school report as part of the application process.

SportMoreton First has a strong reputation for competing in a wide range of sports on a local, regional and national level.
We endeavour to attract boys and girls who have the potential to make a significant impact on sporting life at Moreton First.
To qualify for a Sports Scholarship pupils are requested to demonstrate a natural athletic ability in physical competencies across a variety of sports, and a good level of fitness and coordination. We would expect to see evidence of attendance at sports clubs outside of school and a genuine competitive willingness to improve their sporting skills.
During the assessment pupils will participate in a range of multi sports sessions and will be assessed on their ability and potential.
Candidates should bring their sports kit and necessary relevant sports equipment including gum guards and football boots.

Drama
Spoken English
Moreton First are looking for talented performers with an enthusiasm, commitment and energy for drama and those who are good listeners and are able to take direction. Pupils will be required to demonstrate their ability to take on different characters and roles and express clear diction when reciting text.
Older pupils will be requested to implement a variety of well-honed performance skills with facial expressions, physicality, vocal texture and clarity.
Pupils are required to prepare a monologue or a poem and will be asked to perform it on the day. Pupils will be encouraged to share their enjoyment and passion for the subject.
Please ensure candidates bring a copy of their monologue with them on the day. It is also recommended to bring any supporting certificates gained from past examinations.
At Moreton First the importance of the spoken word is truly recognised.Pupils who would like to be considered for a scholarship specifically in Spoken English will be asked to prepare to read from a page of text of their choice and speak on the topic of ‘My Favourite...’

If you are interested in your son or daughter applying for a music scholarship, we would be delighted to see them for an informal assessment. When we meet with prospective pupils, we would like to hear them play their instrument(s) as well as do some listening games and chat about their musical interests. It would be very helpful if you could let us know beforehand what instrument(s) they play, including voice, if they currently play or sing in any ensembles and give an indication of what level they are playing at, even if they haven’t formally taken grades. We are looking for enthusiasm and musical potential at this age, and offers will be made on this basis rather than on a specific grade needing to be achieved.
On the day pupils should bring their instrument(s), music and any piano accompaniment with them. We have our own accompanist who will play for the assessment and will also have a run through with your son/daughter before hand.
MusicDoes your child have a love of music? At Moreton First we are always keen to hear from pupils who love music, enjoy being part of choirs and orchestras and who are interested in spending time developing their skills.

ArtAs an Arts Scholar we are keen to see a developing confidence and enhanced skills with drawing from observation and imagination. An enthusiasm for using a range of materials and processes and a desire to experiment on a range of scales with both 2D and 3D materials.
During the assessment pupils will be required to demonstrate their creativity and flair with a drawing task by adopting their own preferred style where they will be able to showcase their interests and skills.
Pupils are encouraged to bring examples of their own work.

FAQsWhat are Moreton First Scholarships?Moreton First Scholarships recognise the exceptional potential and talents of particular children in specific areas of school life and provide a stretch and challenge pathway to allow those children to continue to develop their talents along their journey towards senior school.
Who can apply for a Moreton First Scholarship and when do they start?Any child, whether in Moreton First currently or another educational setting, who is currently in Year 2 and moving to Year 3 in September may apply. Also any pupil who is currently in Year 3, Year 4 or Year 5 may apply.
How long does a Moreton First Scholarship last?As long as your son or daughter is at Moreton First and as long as they are able to fulfil the requirements of their particular scholarship. Looking ahead to our Senior School, we consider all applicants for Remove, from Moreton First and other schools, on a level playing field. Therefore, assuming your daughter would like to continue to benefit from the opportunities afforded to her as a Scholar, she needs to apply for a Senior School Scholarship when she moves into Remove.
How does a Moreton First Scholarship help my son gain entry to a senior school of his choice?A comprehensive programme of support, guidance and scholarship preparation is in place for all boys in Moreton First and starts in earnest in Year 5. The Moreton First Scholarship programme sits alongside this to enable boys with particular talents to be considered for scholarships aligned with these. Our independence from any one senior school allows us to tailor our advice and guidance individually for every school a boy may apply for.
Do Moreton First Scholarships attract fee remission?We already offer a broad and generous programme of means-tested fee assistance through our bursary programme and direct parents there if fee assistance is required. Moreton First Scholarships are centred on providing an enhanced programme of support, stretch and challenge for our most able students in the areas where they shine. Fee remissions should, therefore, be considered the exception rather than the rule.
Can I apply for more than one scholarship?Yes, however do bear in mind that your son or daughter needs to be able to fully engage with the requirements of each Scholarship. It may be more advisable to focus on one at this early stage in their education.
