States. New York andNew Jersey were hitthe hardest. A yearlater, some areas
are still recoveringfrom the storm.
Thirteen-year-oldElizabeth Nies ofBreezy Point inNew York Cityremembers itall too well. The
storm destroyedmost of her neighborhood.

Point. But it wasn't untilElizabeth stepped out ontothe porch that she and herfamily knew they were introuble. A huge wave wascoming at them from anearby bay. The hurricane'spowerful winds had causedthe bay to overflow.
Water poured into thebasement of Elizabeth'shouse. It was too late toevacuate, so her familyheaded upstairs.
"I was really scared thatsomebody was going to gethurt," says Elizabeth.
From a window, she sawfurniture floating throughthe streets. She watchedneighbors escape theirhomes in boats.
But water wasn't the onlyworry. That night, a firebroke out in a house downthe street. Wind spreadthe flames to other homes.

Firefighters rushed to help."There were firemen up
to their chests with water,"Elizabeth remembers.
After the StormBy morning, the storm
had passed. Elizabeth's housewas still standing. But manyof her neighbors weren't solucky. More than 100 homeshad burned to the ground.Hundreds more had beenflooded.
"We didn't have anyelectricity or places to goget food," says Elizabeth.
For two months, she andher family stayed at hergrandfather's house.
A year later, the peopleof Breezy Point are stillrebuilding their homes. Thathas made the communitymuch closer. "We're allthankful for each other,"Elizabeth says.
