Keynote Speaker:Dean Shareski

Confessions of a ShareaholicIn 2012, we have now been given the ability to share and connect in ways not pos-sible 10, even 5 years ago. What does that potential mean for us as educators? How will it help us as individuals? How will it help our school district? How will that help our students? What’s my responsibility? Where might I start? All challenging and complex

questions. Let’s look at some possibilities together and develop a clearer understanding of our new roles as educa-tors.

Dean Shareski is currently the Community Manager for Discovery Education Canada. He taught grades 1-8 for 14 years and spent 9 years as a digital learning consultant for Prairie South School Division in Moose Jaw, SK. In addition, he teaches pre-service teachers at the University of Regina. His blog consistently ranks among the top educational blogs. Dean also blogs for Tech Learning and the Huffington Post. He won the 2010 ISTE Award for Outstanding Leader of the Year.

AninvitationtoaPerformanceofaNew Anti-Homophobia Play

This play is being written by Lori Mazey, based on interviews being conducted with students and recent grads from this District, so it will be fresh and local. It is part of an EmbraceBC funded arts engagement project, under the auspices of the Community Justice Centre. It neatly ties in with the recently adopted SD71 policy on Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation.

This play will take place in the multipurpose room at Isfeld starting at 12:45 – 1:15. We request that you indicate on the registration form if you will be attending.

AM SESSIONS

1. Inside The Tools Of Sharing:Presenter: Dean ShareskiAll

This workshop will explore in depth the tools that allow us to easily, quickly and effectively share and receive con-tent that is useful and relevant to a variety of audiences.

2. Reading Power - an Introduction and Overview Presenter: Adrienne GearGrades K – 8, teacher librarians, support teachers

This session is for any teachers who may not be familiar with Reading Power or who wish to have a “refresher” on the key concepts and classroom set up. Adrienne will introduce Reading Power for both fiction and nonfiction reading, discuss the importance of developing a “language of thinking” in your classroom and school and review the key concepts of meta-cognition and how it relates to reading instruction. She will model some lessons and share some great new books and lesson templates.

Adrienne Gear is a teacher, literacy consultant and author. She currently teaches two days a week in Vancouver and then spends time working in other school districts and classrooms around the province presenting workshops and giv-ing demonstration lessons. She is the author of two books on comprehension instruction: “Reading Power” and “Non-fiction Reading Power”. Her latest book “Writing Power” has just been released. Adrienne lives in Vancouver with her husband and their two boys.

3. Phonics Tools that Work - Beyond Jolly Presenter: Doreen StrideGrades 1 - 7

Did you know there are 71 letter combinations to represent the 42 sounds of English speech? Jolly Phonics covers the first 41 letter combinations, but what about the rest?

Knowledge of the advanced phonetic code has several practical applications including decoding and spelling. Struggling readers in both primary and intermediate grades often need explicit instruction in the area of phonics to enable them to become more proficient decoders of text.

The Funny Phonogram Forecast (primary/lower intermediate) and Sounds Like Greek to Me (upper intermediate) are practical, visual tools that organize the vowels and all multiple letter combinations in a fun and logical way. Also to be introduced is a fun easy to use Phonics RAP that really works to teach letter combinations. These tools are intended for both classroom and learning assistance use. Catchy and creative mnemonic devices are used to cap-ture the interest of students in both the primary and intermediate grades. Teachers who are familiar with the Jolly Phonics method can use these tools to both reinforce the letter combinations already covered by Jolly Phonics and teach their students the remaining phonograms.

Please join me for a session intended to demonstrate a number of practical tools and resources that can make your phonics instruction meaningful and interesting.

Doreen Stride is an elementary teacher with 18 years of experience. She has taught all grades Kindergarten through six. Currently she teaches Grade 2/3 at Miracle Beach Elementary. Her strong belief that learning should be fun has been a major motivator in creating teaching tools for the classroom.

4. Math: Using Literacy StrategiesPresenter: Cheryl AdebarGrades 2 – 7 math teachers

How can we use what we know about literacy strategies and apply them to our math classrooms, so that our stu-dents become better mathematical thinkers? Concepts in math are different from concepts in language, however cognitive processes underlie both. This workshop will begin to answer this question by examining mathematical thinking and concepts through the literacy strategies of asking questions, making connections, visualizing, infer-ring, determining importance, synthesizing and monitoring metacognition. Specific math examples across the grades will be used and applied to these strategies throughout the workshop. Handouts will be available in English and French.

Cheryl Adebar is presently the Numeracy Support Teacher for School District 71. She has taught math in classrooms (grades 2-10) for more than 15 years in Ontario and BC. She has recently worked as the Curriculum Support Teacher at École Robb Rd.

5. Successful Learners ~ A Framework for the 21st CenturyPresenter: Sue BannisterGrades K – 12 though most suitable for K – 7

Does fostering student success through the use of a limited and manageable framework that intersects allcurriculum interest you?

The Successful Learner Framework (SLF) represents 8 traits that are critical to a lifetime of success!

Consider 8 traits:• that powerfully impact student success• that are founded on a broad base of research, aligned specifically to the BC Ministry of• Education statements of mission• that over 1000 teachers have identified as key to student success• that become the central focus of teaching in all subject areas• that make up a framework aligned with:

AFL strategies, Positive Behaviour Support, 21st Century Learning/Personalizedlearning; Project/Play Based Learning; and the support of self-regulation and executivefunctioning skills.

If you are moving in these directions already, then the SLF offers a powerful way to simplify and focusyour practice, for any teacher K-12.

In this workshop you will:• get new ideas about re-orienting your teaching emphasis from a curriculum-based focus to a student capacity

focus• learn how to use the framework with the clear intention of bringing greater coherency to your practice using a

manageable framework;• be provided with materials to get you started … the following Monday!

Sue Bannister holds an MA in Student Assessment and Elementary Language Arts. She worked under thesponsorship/mentorship of Dr. Terry Johnson developing the Successful Learners Framework. Sue hasused the SLF in grades 1 through 8, as well as with her 3rd year university students; she reports theresults to be empowering and exciting, no matter the age!

6. Using iPods & iPads in the Classroom K - 7Presenter: Patricia HartK - 7, Learning Support Teachers or anyone who is fairly new to the technology. If you are com-fortable and are already using them, then this is not for you.

Are you wondering how to bring the latest technology into the classroom effectively? This workshop will focus on how we can incorporate iPods/iPad into the classroom for students to use effectively. I will show you how to use an iPod/iPad, which apps support the different subjects and topics in that subject area. Also, I will show you how to support students who have difficulty with written output, reading and focus, to succeed. There are so many dif-ferent ways we can incorporate this kind of technology and at the same time, teach the students how to use their own more effectively.

Patricia has been teaching for 7 years across the island, focusing on elementary. She has a specialty in special education, but focus on making kids engaged and independent learners. She introduced iPods 4 years ago, as a way to hook kids back into reading and from there it has branched out into different areas of learning. She is currently teaching grades 6 & 7, as well as learning support. Patricia finds iPods and iPads a valuable tool that reaches into children’s lives so that their learning will continue even after they leave school. She is still exploring and learning the endless possibilities that are available to us to meet new students and their learning needs.

These activities will help the students to express their understanding in a variety of ways: graphically, numerically, algebraically, and verbally. These activities also help the teachers to address the many different types of learning styles that can be found in any classroom. Many of these activities can be extended for use in the higher level courses.

Bernadette is the Head of Mathematics at Saint Michaels University School, in Victoria. She has been teaching for 29 years, in both public and independent schools, in Quebec, Manitoba, and British Columbia. Bernadette is teaching Foundations and Pre-Calculus 10, Foundations of Mathematics 11, Pre-Calculus 11, and Principles of Mathematics 12. She believes that if students get to “play” with the mathematical concepts, they will fully understand the concepts.

32. Designing Teaching and Learning…Presenter: Judy MartinGrades K - 12

Inquiry is a dynamic process of being open to wonder and puzzlement and coming to know and understand the world. As such, it is a stance that pervades all aspects of life and is essential to the way in which knowledge is cre-ated. Inquiry is based on the belief that understanding is constructed in the process of people working and con-versing together as they pose and solve the problems; make discoveries and rigorously testing the discoveries that arise in the course of shared activity.

This multimedia, hands-on/minds-on workshop provides an opportunity for participants to immerse themselves in the most current research related to designing teaching and learning. This session profiles the work of teachers in two different classrooms who have created 21st century learning environments to foster these competencies in their students. Technology enables us to glimpse inside these classrooms and view the teaching and learning in one elementary and one secondary school classroom. Here we will see how students were invited to undertake authentic intellectual work and the assessment practices that enabled them to take increasing control over their

33. Bringing Global Education Into the Classroom (in French)Presenter: Lucie FerrariK – 12

Are you looking for new ways to energize how you teach existing units? Introducing a global perspective into your classroom can be challenging, but exciting. Bring your existing ideas, a current unit, or theme to this workshop and let us show you how to integrate, infuse, and deliver it from a global perspective at any grade level. A global education approach activates student interest as it increases personal engagement and involvement in the class-room, the surrounding community, and our world. This workshop is beneficial for K–12.
