School Matters FROM THE HEADMASTER’S OFFICE
You were born a winner. A warrior, one who defied the odds …
The only walls that exist are those you have placed in your mind. And whatever obstacles you conceive, exist only because you have
forgotten what you have already achieved.
Extract from: Remember Your Greatness by Suzy Kassem
Our swimmers have already done us proud at the A-league inter-high on Monday by winning 11 medals, a record for us at this gala. To our athletes participating in the A-league for the first time on Friday, remember what you have already achieved, and regardless the results tomorrow, you are all winners. Our spectators will also have their first taste of this league, and although we are outnumbered, I am convinced that we will be remembered. To improve security measures within the estate and on the school campus, the gym gate (gate 11) has been permanently closed. Access from the estate to campus must now take place via the swimming pool gate (gate 12) or still via the Balmoral gate (gate 10). The turnstile has also been moved from gate 11 to gate 12. If your access has been affected at the gate reader, please report to Ms Dorothea Whittle at the school office for an access form. A word of thanks to all the parents who attended the two Coffee-with-Carel sessions, your input is always valued. Thank you for entrusting your children to our care with regard to the forthcoming grade 8, 9 and 11 camps. A salute to our teachers for keeping the Midstream College ship afloat amidst a busy start to the year. May they all inspire your children.
The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.
William Ward Suzy Kassem, born in Toledo, Ohio (1975) is an American thinker, poet, writer, film director, humanitarian, and philosopher (lover of wisdom). Her essays and poetry were
translated into many languages around the world. William Ward (1769–1823) was an English pioneer Baptist missionary, author, printer and translator.
UBER The Independent Schools Association of South Africa (ISASA) has advised schools to communicate the following to parents regarding the use of Uber:
Parents should familiarise themselves with Uber’s own Terms and Conditions which stipulate that the service is not available to persons under the age of 18 years, unless they are accompanied by an adult.
The school will not be liable for any incidents resulting from the use of Uber by learners.

INTER-HIGH ATHLETICS Thank you to all the learners going to the inter-high as spectators. Unfortunately, we are limited by the organisers regarding the number of spectators we can accommodate. Learners not going as spectators may remain at home. The school offers supervision for those learners who are unable to stay at home for the morning. Kindly inform Ms Jacolien Lüneburg ([email protected]) if you would like to make use of the supervision at school. The buses should be back at school at approximately 20:30 if all goes according to the programme.
CAMPS This year’s camps, which start next week, have already been paid in full. Should a learner now withdraw from the camps without a valid reason, you will be responsible for the total cost thereof.
Academics
LEARNER’S AND DRIVER’S LICENCES We understand that getting appointments for learner’s and later driver’s licences is not easy. However, we urge you not to make these appointments on days when scheduled tests are written. (See school diary for test dates.) Learners can therefore not be excused from scheduled tests for licence appointments.
APPLICATIONS TO SCHOOLS AND UNIVERSITIES ABROAD An ever-increasing number of learners apply for admission to schools and universities overseas. These institutions require what is generally known as a “transcript” as part of the application process. Please note that these “transcripts” will be issued at a cost of R300-00. Contact the Head of Academics in this regard.

Sport The summer sport season is drawing to a close with last weekend’s Finsbury Series cricket matches and this week’s inter-high swimming gala. Tomorrow we have the A-league inter-high athletics meeting at the Ruimsig Stadium. Good luck to all the athletes and spectators. The swimmers made us proud with their fourth place overall in the A-league and the cricket finished third in their group.
