Eleanor Roosevelt Welcome and congratulations to our 232 grade 8 learners who were inaugurated as fully-fledged Midstreamers last Thursday night. We believe that they will live their dreams, reach out for new experiences and seize all the opportunities the College has to offer. February will present many such opportunities, such as the Valentine’s Ball, the inter-high swimming and athletics meetings, as well as the grade 8 camp at the end of the month. They will also experience their first night school on Thursday, 20 February, the day before our inter-high athletics. We hope to see all the grade 8s at our first A-league inter-high at Ruimsig Stadium. We believe in an open-door policy at Midstream College and you are welcome to contact the relevant teachers if you have any queries or problems. Please take note of the communication channels, for example for an academic query: first contact the class teacher, if not satisfied then contact the subject manager, then the academic head and if you are still not satisfied, do not hesitate to contact me. Another example of our open-door policy is the Coffee-with-Carel sessions. A reminder to all grade 9 to 12 parents that your next opportunity is in our staffroom next Thursday, 13 February from 07:30 to 08:30. I would like to thank all the grade 8 parents who attended their first Coffee-with-Carel session this morning and I hope to see you there regularly during the next five years. Anna Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962) was an American political figure, diplomat and activist. She served as the First Lady of the United States (1933 to 1945) during her husband President Franklin D. Roosevelt's four terms in office, making her the longest serving First Lady of the United States. Academics ASSESSMENT PROGRAMME The complete assessment programme for each grade for the entire year is available on the website. (Follow the links: Academics – Assessment – choose grade.) Please read it in conjunction with the test timetable in the learners’ diaries. We trust that this will assist you in your planning at home. You are reminded that learners have to hand in a medical certificate to their subject teachers if they miss a scheduled test, before they will be allowed to write an alternate test.
