Principal’s Report Pamela Streete Dear Parents/carers,

Week 4 of Term 3 has come round quickly and before we know it we will be heading towards the end of term once again. We are working towards our PYP Authorisation on the following dates October 26th and 27th 2017. I hope you were able to attend one of our PYP information sharing sessions on Thursday 10th August,2017. If you were unable to attend for other reasons, please don’t hesitate to speak to Joelene Kowalski our PYP Coordinator or your child’s teacher.

Curriculum- IB PYP PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAMME The PYP presents schools with a comprehensive plan for high quality education, international education. It provides schools with a curriculum framework of essential elements- 1. Knowledge 2. Skills. 3. Concepts 4. Attitudes. 5. Action

School Mission- The community of Glenroy West Primary School works in partnership to inspire every child to do their best and encourages them to grow and achieve excellence

School Vision - Inspire, Grow, Achieve

Schools work with the five elements to construct a rigorous and challenging curriculum for international education. The PYP aims to create a curriculum that is engaging, relevant, challenging and significant for learners in the 3-12 age range. The PYP is organised into:-

1. Written curriculum- what students need to learn

2. Taught curriculum- how to teach the PYP

3. Assessed curriculum- principles and practices of effective assessment.

The curriculum is transdisciplinary meaning that it focuses on issues that go across subject areas. Stay tuned for the next update. Professional Learning At times your child’s teacher may be attending professional learning which is an expectation from DET and the school. In the course of any absence, your child’s teacher will leave a work program to ensure the learning continues. Thank you for your understanding. Book Week Celebrations Glenroy West Primary School will be celebrating Book Week between 21st and 25th August 2017. Book Week celebrates Australian authors and illustrators of children’s Books. It is a wonderful time to immerse children in literature and celebrate books and reading. The theme this year is ‘ESCAPE TO EVERYWHERE”. To celebrate this occasion we will be having a Book character Parade on Thursday morning of the 24th. The parade will be a whole school event with both junior and senior school showcasing their costumes. Students are encouraged to come to school dressed as their favourite book character, however, be creative and try to use items of clothing and /or props from home. Each grade will have an opportunity to parade their costume with the school community and enjoy participating in literacy activities during Book Week. We hope you can join us for our special day! A note will be sent home this week with the details. Book Week Committee.

EVERY DAY COUNTS- ATTENDANCE- IT’S NOT OK TO BE AWAY.EVERY DAY COUNTS We are presently reviewing our processes for daily attendance and ‘lateness.’ DID YOU KNOW YOUR CHILD’S BEST LEARNING TIME IS THE START OF THE SCHOOL DAY? THAT’S WHEN EVERY MINUTE COUNTS THE MOST! It is very important to receive notification from parents or guardians when children are absent from school as we have an accountability to the Department of Education. Please use the following methods to inform us and include your child’s name and grade, date and reason for the absence.

Written note

Speak directly to the Classroom teacher. Teachers have a Duty of Care to call parents if a child is absent

more than 2 days.

At Glenroy West Primary School we are committed to providing your child with an excellent education. The building blocks of an excellent education begins with all students coming to school each and every day. Regular school attendance is vital and missing school days can have a big impact on a child’s future. Missing one day a fortnight will equate to missing four full weeks by the end of the year. Each day a student misses school puts them behind and can affect their educational outcomes. Some of the reasons for student absence at GWPS

Staying home to celebrate a birthday

Going shopping

Looking after a sibling

Spending time with a relative

Extended weekends

Overseas travel

Dental and medical appointment

Illness

If for any reason your child must be absent from school, parents or guardians are required to provide written notification, stating the reason for their child’s absence. This information will be retained by the teacher and archived by the school. This is a DET requirement. Kind regards, Have a great week ahead, Pamela Streete. Principal
