"Freude am Lernen" Joy of Learning
School News March 1, 2016
School SafetyWe routinely comply with ASD mandated fire, natural disaster, stay
put, and lockdown drills. Our new facility has been designed to
enhance the level of security we are able to offer. At ASD schools,
the doors remain locked during school hours. At the end of the
day, our teachers escort their class to a prescribed pick up point.
As you know, kindergarten and 1st graders are picked up in the
gym while other classes line up outside. Teachers make every
effort to lead their students down early so that doors may be
opened at release time. If doors are opened earlier, it would make
it more difficult for students to get to their pick up location and it
would be more difficult for our staff to keep track of students. We
appreciate you for signing in when visiting and wearing a badge to
identify yourself as well. We would like to thank parents for their
understanding and for adhering to ASD procedures that were
developed with the safety of all students in mind.

Over the next two weeks, we will be assessing the level of German
language proficiency with our 3rd, 6th and 8th grade students.
Here are some specifics regarding these annual assessments.

short conversation and talk about familiar topics that have been
covered in class. Their listening skills are assessed along with
reading and writing simple sentences in German.
A2 Prüfung (6th graders) Represents the approximate level of
high school 3rd year German. Students can carry on a normal
conversation on a variety of topics and make a presentation on the
subject of their choice. They can understand native German
speakers well and can write a cohesive essay in German.

everyday topic. They make a presentation and are able to

German junior college.
The Alaska Measures of Progress (AMP) is Alaska's
summative assessment for students in grades 3 through 10. The
purpose of the large scale summative assessment is to provide
parents and schools an overall picture of a student's progress in
meeting standards at their grade level.
Students taking AMP will be tested on Alaska State Standards in
the content areas of English Language Arts and Mathematics.
Students in grades 4, 8, and 10 will also be tested in science. The
assessment is taken on the computer and is not timed, but each
content area can take approximately 90120 minutes. Student
have access to universal tools to help them on the assessment,
with additional accessibility tools and accommodations, if
applicable.
This year, revised score reports for AMP will include more
information on the areas in which a student is making progress and
areas in which they might need more help. Parents can locate
resources for the AMP assessment, including directions
for technology practice tests, on the ASD website at
www.asdk12.org/ae/amp.

testing. Please avoid scheduling appointments on your child's
testing days.

Thanks for Supporting Our Dress Code
On Jan. 22nd, School Messenger was used to announce that a
concerted effort to enforce our dress code policy is being made by
our faculty and staff. We asked that you do what you can from
home to support our efforts. We wanted to thank you for helping.
We have seen a marked decrease in the number of out of
compliance notices. We celebrate this positive change. Review
the policy at http://rilkeschule.asdk12.org/policies/dresscodepolicy/.

Let's Welcome Our Newest Intern!
Our latest and last intern to arrive this year is
Bettina Schraufstetter. She comes to us from Neumarkt in der
Oberpfalz in Bavaria, a small city of approximately 40,000 people.
Frau Schraufstetter is attending the Universät Augsburg and is
studying to be a primary school teacher, grades 1 4. Currently she
is working with Frau Radke and her students in 3rd grade. She
states she is impressed with the level at which the students are
able to express themselves in German while working on a tree
project.
She finds Alaskans to be very friendly and often willing to offer
help. She is staying with the Hess Family and is grateful for their
hospitality. She is impressed by the majestic beauty of The Great
Land and hopes to see as much of it as possible during her stay.
So far, there are plans to visit Fairbanks and Homer.
Please join me in extending a hearty welcome to Bettina
Schraufstetter!
We are very grateful for the responses we received from families
interested in hosting an intern next school year. We simply couldn't
make it happen without your generosity. Please contact Ann
Weese at [email protected] to find out more about hosting an
Amity International intern.
Applications for the lottery system are currently being accepted.
Please go to http://www.asdk12.org/welcome/lottery/ to learn more.
Parents/guardians of current Rilke Schule students also need to be
sure to submit the lottery application for their incoming
kindergartener.

Spring Break InstallationsThe sound panels for the gymnasium have arrived and will be
installed in early during Spring Break. During that same week, a
folding soundproof wall will replace the temporary plywood
barrier between the gym and Herr Downie's music room. This will
facilitate Drama Club in the production of plays as well. The
students will be able to get ready and transition from back
stage instead of having to put up screens off to the side.
Other installations include basketball hoops and anchors for
volleyball in the floor. We are excited to see improvements to our
new facility!
Please Refrain from Cell Phone Usage While inthe Pick Up Lane Safety is a Priority. Thanks!

Volunteer Night GratitudeBefore Volunteer Night took place, a list of specific tasks was sent
out to the community. We're thinking that was helpful since several
families showed up to meet those requests. Our staff would like to
recognize the families of the following students for giving up their
Saturday evening to meet the needs of our school:
Esme Golden
Ilsa Golden
Ian Langerman
Hatcher Larson
Mia Mulder
