School Newsletter Term 3 Week 5 2017 Welcome to this edition of the newsletter. Already we are over half way through Term 3 - the year is rushing by and it is encouraging to see signs of spring as the temperatures are slowly warming up. However, our grounds are still water logged so we are hoping for a dry windy week to sort them out. Last week we had some of the Year 7 and International pupils attend the Mt Hutt Ski Day. This ski trip was a success with great weather and wonderful parent help. We saw a change of weather developing at the end of the day, which created a wee bit of a scare when the access road closed due to snowdrifts. However, the buses got through and we did not have to spend the night in the Mt Hutt café again. Winter sport at Hagley Park is now over. We have had a lot of help this year from people outside our school with coaching: Football - Jeremy Aitken; Hockey- Kate Bayliss and Lizzie Minish; Rugby- Caleb Aperahama and Jordan Jackett; Basketball - Dave Strange, Tania Jones, Renee Sharp, Nathan Baltista and Vincent. Thank you very much to these people. Our children have thoroughly appreciated your expertise and skill. We have had a busy time with visitors from China. Another big thank you to the Kirkwood families for hosting these children over the last few weeks. Several of these pupils spoke at our assembly last Friday and I was really impressed with the delivery and planning of their speeches. It is amazing that people so young can have such a grasp of English as a second language. We currently have an inter class Korfball Tournament which is being held at lunchtimes. Korfball is reasonably new for us; our children are finding that it is great fun and really competitive, however, in a non-threatening way. Year 8 classes are competing now and the Year 7’s will take over when they are finished. This week has been a busy one with the Hockey and Rugby Sevens Tournament which was played last Tuesday. We also had a team of four take part in a chess competition (social grade) and gained first place. It is great to see these activities happening in the school. There are so many opportunities for our pupils; they just have to make sure they take advantage of them. All of our Year 8 pupils should now be enrolled at a high school. Even if you are attending your in-zone school it is important that you are enrolled. If you have won places at more than one high school, could I encourage you to make your choice and then to inform all schools of your decision. If you are not going to attend a high school, letting them know early will allow another child to be given that place. Thank you for your on-going support of our school. We look forward to working with you and your family as we do the best we can for each and every child at Kirkwood. Best wishes Peter Aitken Acting Principal

Celebrating our Pupils Success Congratulations to Ryan J and Jacob H who both play in the U13 Rolleston Gold rugby team. Their team went through their season undefeated and won their final on Saturday against West Melton. They are the holders of the Southbridge RFC Cup and Hardwick Family Trophy as well as the Totalspan Shield for their age in the Ellesmere Rugby Sub Union. This is an outstanding achievement. Well done boys. Congratulations also goes to Jemma of Year 7 in Room 8 as she has been selected for the Selwyn 12th Grade Football Girls’ rep team this year.

Fruit Trees Last week, Brayden, Josh and I helped Ms Anderson and Mr Von Hagen plant trees in the school grounds. We planted plum, pear and apple trees that were generously donated to the school from the Canterbury Heritage Fruit Archive. We are also very grateful to Living Earth for donating the compost.

The trees look fantastic and should grow well. This will then mean that in a few years’ time pupils from the school will be able to enjoy picking and using the fruit. . By Jak

Farewell and Safe Travels Twelve of our short-term International Students from China left last Friday and the final three will leave us this coming Friday. It has been such a great experience for everyone learning about the different cultures and enhancing our cultural awareness. The Chinese students learnt many new skills with the ski trip being a definite highlight for the group. We wish all the students safe travels back home to China. Mrs Climo Thank You to the Homestay Parents We would like to take this opportunity to say how much we have appreciated our homestay families who have hosted our International short-term students. Thank you for opening your homes to our visiting students and making them feel welcome in your families. We have been very impressed with the wonderful support you have given them. Thank you also to the school staff for all the hard work you have put in to create educational experiences with a Kiwiana theme. Alison Xie & Phil Tappenden

Modern Learning Enviroments Thank you to everyone who has responded to my short survey on Modern Learning Enviroments. I have found it very interesting to read your thoughts, and I appreciate you sharing them with me. It is obvious that some of the changes happening in education are being made quickly, and not necessarily with the support of the school community. I am finding my research fascinating, especially the opportunity to go into different schools and see what is working and why. I can assure you that if any changes are to be made at Kirkwood, they will be made with full consultation with our Board, and with our parent community. I really appreciated the number of parents who were very positive in their thoughts on our school as it is, and I tend to agree. Any change would absolutely need to be driven by research that shows improved student learning outcomes for all students. I have yet to find any research that can show this, but I have seen some very interesting classroom set ups, some good use of technology (especially laptops and chrome books) and some very dedicated teachers. Whilst I am enjoying this opportunity, and I am very grateful to the Board for allowing me to do this, I am very much looking forward to coming back to Kirkwood next term. Best wishes Phil Tappenden

Feedback from our Hockey Coach

I have to give all the credit to the children, they were awesome and performed to high standards every week. I was most impressed with how, even when we started in the harder grade, they persevered and did an awesome job in winning the B grade, which I am incredibly proud of. Five wins from five games, (50 goals for and only 12 against) and they cleaned up and took the whole 50 points that were up for grabs.

I do want to comment that Marcus was an awesome captain for the team and I am very proud of him for leading the team to success. Even when we were winning by a large number of goals, the children stayed humble and worked hard and together.

The children were just awesome and I would do it again.

Thank you for the opportunity.
