1st XI Cricket A heavy reliance was placed firmly on the shoulders of Russell to get the bulk of the runs and to be regularly amongst the wickets. He didn’t disappoint, racking up a total of 351 runs at a mightily impressive average of a touch over 50,coupled with finishing as leading wicket taker.Instrumental with 57* in the only success of the season, an 8 wicket victory over Bishopsgate, Russell proved he will certainly be a player to watch in his final year. The other highlight of the season was a battling draw against quite possibly the best side we played.Hall Grove set an improbable target of 183 from 34 overs but a surge of resilience raced its way to the forefront of the match.Teetering at 81-5 with plenty of overs remaining, the usual late order collapse seemed to be on its way and an early conclusion to the match would be had. However, Hawkey and Boer put together a remarkable rearguard action against some hostile bowling to inch their way closer and closer to a most unlikely draw. It was left to number 11, Zakhir ma. to see out the final over and complete what was an astonishing escape from defeat.Hopes that this result would lead to a further upturn in fortunes quickly evaporated when outplayed in successive matches against Ludgrove, Woodcote House and Milbourne Lodge where Russell’s well complied knock of 72 was in vain. A final day defeat against Horris Hill completed what will go down as a forgettable season. At times, the boys showed that they could be capable of competing. However, on too many occasions, when some real quality was needed to pick up a key wicket, snaffle a half chance, or dig in and put together a score, we often fell a little short. CampingThis summer has provided some fantastic conditions for school camping, apart from the rather stormyfirst weekend for forms I to III! The boys who have attended have really enjoyed sleeping out in theschools commodious bell tents, near to the Orchard. The boys have constructed basic survival sheltersout of natural materials, built fires, played capture the flag, toasted marshmallows and told ghost storiesaround the fire. The most popular event however has been the air rifle 'tin can' shoot to win theirprecious marshmallows! It has been great fun and hopefully will continue to be a popular feature of thesummer term.

Gardening ClubThe boys have been busy at the Gardening Clubthis term, watering the plants and weedingduring break or their free time. They have grownradishes, lettuces, tomatoes, courgettes, strawberries, potatoes and broad beans.

House SingingCompetitionThe House Singing Competition on June 25thwas a lovely evening with the standard of entrieshigher than ever before. We were pleased towelcome Mr Richard Coppack, the Head ofMusic from Ashdown House School who gavesome very valuable comments to each of thesoloists, and judged the competition for us. Hesaid it was a very close call with the standardbeing so high, but the overall winners of eachclass were Coen for the Junior Solo class, andHopton mi for the Senior solo class. The HouseSong class was a close run affair. This year'stheme was 'Songs from the Shows' and thehouses had been practising hard in the weeksprior, but on the night the prize went to Girdle-stone for their version of 'Circle of Life'. Welldone to them, but also to the other three houseswho all gave very creditable performances.

S.J.L

Parents ChoirThe Parents Choir met this term on May 17thwith an afternoon rehearsal before joining theboys for the evening service. We were able todistribute music before the day, so everyone waswell prepared, and the evening service was a realfeast of music. We sang the Pentecost anthem'Come Holy Ghost' by Attwood with T.Arthursinging the solo verse. The sound is becomingmore balanced and confident every time thegroup meets. It is a valuable experience for theboys to be able to sing music supported withtenor and bass parts, and the good humour andenjoyment the parents bring with them makesthe occasions an event to look forward to.

S.J.L

House CompetitionWhat a great term for the house competition! One point separated Girdlestone and thewinners Crabtree in one of the most excitingcompetitions for a long time.We celebrated witha delicious meal of duck pancakes, butterfly lamband melting chocolate pudding. House elderMalhame gave a soulful last speech urging thehouse on to more victories in the terms tocome. Thanks to Darren and his team for such awonderful meal and to the boys in the Housefor their outstanding efforts throughout theterm and for making sure to show their showups, it always makes such a difference.

Sunningdale Pigs and BeesSunningdale School has Pigs!At the beginning of May we welcomed three small Gloucestershire Old Spotpiglets to the school. This is a very exciting venture and everyone couldn't wait for them to arrive. Theyhave been with us for just over two months now and they require feeding twice a day and making surethey have fresh water to drink and clean bedding to sleep in.The boys have really enjoyed feeding themand caring for them. They will be with us for the SummerTerm. We then plan to make lots of sausages. The boys are aware of this and I believe this is the most important reason for having the pigs.

We are too quick in today's society to think all food just comes straight from a supermarket. The pupilsfirst hand can feed and care for an animal they know they will eat in the future. We are also 100% surethat the meat we will eat lived a happy existence and was able to live life the the full by being able toexpress all their natural behaviours such as digging and bathing in the sun. This is unlike the vast majorityof commercially raised pigs for our supermarkets which never even the see the light of day. I want thepupils to get closer to the natural world and the systems that sustain us.

As well as pigs we also have our very first Beehivefilled with 60,000 bees working hard at producingdelicious golden honey which will be extractedlater on in the term. The boys have had theopportunity to put a bee suit on and get up closeand personal with the beehive, looking inside anddoing inspections.

Brookwood CommonwealthWar Graves Commission Cemetery

On Saturday the 27th June, forms IV and IVA visited the Brookwood Commonwealth War GravesCommission Cemetery. It was a fitting culmination to the term, during which they have studied the Firstand SecondWorldWars. The cemetery is the largest one of its kind in the UK and is immaculately main-tained. The boys visited British,Canadian,US,Polish,Czechoslovakian and other plots and memorials. Par-ticularly poignant were the graves of soldiers who had died in the recent Afghanistan campaign.

2nd XI CricketI can't remember the last time a cricket season wasso much fun. This team really bonded and gelledand worked together as a genuine team should. Wewon only the one game against Milbourne Lodgeand managed a draw versus St George's early in theseason, otherwise we lost our matches. The difficulty

at this standard is never the bowling, most can turntheir arm, it's finding depth to the batting and genuinelasting partnerships that can sustain defendablescores over the one hundred mark. Sadly we onlymanaged one score above a hundred which gives agood indication as to our batting weakness. Never-theless there were some wonderful cameos fromIglesias (40 v Hall Grove), Hagg-Davies andCartwright. Behind the stumps Cartwright provedan excellent, fearless keeper and at mid-off withIglesias diving for every catch the two made aformidable pair. There were some great spells ofbowling from Marshall-Lee, Davenport-Thomas,Arthur and, most impressively, Delikatntyi.Crewe-Read captained well with Delikatnyi to takeover the helm when it was needed and a mentionmust be made for Boam who made the numberone spot his own and those other two stalwarts ofthe teamTreacher and Seal.

3rd XI CricketThe 3rd XI cricket team have made excellent progress this summer term. The boys benefited hugelyfrom the brilliant training sessions set up by the visiting Hampshire County coach, Paul, early in theseason. The boys repeatedly rehearsed bowling, batting and fielding drills and these early sessions werekey in laying the foundations for future success. Of the first four games the team achieved an impressivethree wins. The improvement of the team led to our better players deservedly moving up to the secondXI and subsequently our last two games did not go our way. The penultimate game at Ludgrove was ademonstration of resilience and endeavor and in a nail biting final over, the team narrowly fell short of adraw by two balls. Aside from the positive improvements made I have been particularly impressed by theteam spirit displayed that has made this season so enjoyable.

Under 11A CricketPLAYED 11WON 11 - UNBEATEN SEASON

Talent alone does not make a great team.Without talent it becomes more difficult but what makes agreat team is hard work, enthusiasm, enjoyment and togetherness. This group of boys displayed all ofthese qualities and then some.We got off to a great start and although it was a little closer at times, theyjust got better and better.

We started with a comfortable win against Lockers Park with Buxton leading from the front with the batand an entertaining cameo from Coen. Ashdown were next and although we did not field that well, Buxtontook key wickets and Senior ma and Hopkins got us off to a great start with the bat. Bishopsgate andWoodcote were held to fairly modest totals by two five wicket hauls by Senior ma. who then startedsmashing the ball to all corners of the ground with 4 sixes in his innings. It was Buxton's turn to take fiveagainst Hall Grove and Hopton mi. , Lewis ma. and Senior mi. got their chance to show what they coulddo with the bat. This was fast becoming an all round team.

Ludgrove was next. A run out by Senior mi., the most deadly fielder in the side, removed their best batsmanbefore he had faced a ball and we then never looked like losing. This was also the game that Hinchcliffereally found his rhythm with the ball. Milbourne Lodge simply did not make enough runs and Lewis ma.batted well to help secure a comfortable victory.

AgainstWoodcote, away, the top three all scored 50 in a total of 216 of 20 overs! We used ten bowlersback at them and it was good to see Davies and de Carlos in the wickets. Senior mi.made three run outs!

With three games to go Brambletye gave us what looked like a sterner test with a total of 150.With runsfrom Senior ma.,Hopkins ,Buxton,Hopton mi. and Hinchliffe, though we got through in only 15 overs withthe loss of 3 wickets. Our closest game came against St.Andrew's, Pangbourne. We did not bat well andwithout Senior's 53 and a very good performance from Lewis ma. we would have struggled. It was closeall the way in their reply but an outstanding team performance in the field kept our record intact.

The final game of the season was a celebration of all we had achieved. We batted first and declared at195-7 with 64 for Buxton, 63 from Senior ma. and 33 from Hopkins. They were never going to get closeto this and another fivefer from Buxton wrapped up was what an amazing term.

This seasonwill live long in thememory;not just for the fact that theywon but also for how they played the game.

Under 9A CricketThe Under 9 A's this year has been a real rollercoaster of emotions. I, for one, am certainly one yearcloser to an acute myocardial infarction. We startedoff the season with stunning victories over LockersPark,Dorset House, AshdownHouse and Bishopsgate. With theWoodcote House fixture just around thecorner, we knew a victory there would put us oncourse for an unbeaten season. Though weperformed with valor, it wasn't quite enough and weended up losing by 12 runs. Ludgrove, MillbourneLodge and St Andrews were all too strong in a veryfrustrating middle period. The season finished with fine victories over Horris Hill and Brambletye. The teamwas captained fantastically by Boscawen. His batting and keeping were not too dissimilar to a young Jos But-tler. I couldn't have been prouder of this group of boys.

Under 11B CricketThe boys have made such huge improvementsthis term and should be proud of how far theyhave come. They won all three of their homematches, against Ashdown House, WoodcoteHouse & St Andrew's Pangbourne but the boysweren't so lucky away from home, only winningone. They came incredibly close to beating bothHall Grove and Brambletye, just losing by 1wicket and 2 runs respectively in the matches.Special mentions must go to the leading runscorers Mueller Ansar (87) and Crewe-Read mi.(86) and the leading wicket taker Field ma. al-though all the boys played very important roles.

Under 11C CricketDespite best efforts and unfailing enthusiasm theC's season ended in harsh neatness of fact:played four; lost four.Although we learned a lotabout ourselves on the way, the winning feelingwas not one of them. However, our team didboast a selection of multiple wicket takers whooften caused the opposition an uncomfortablepassage of play: namely Avakayan, Le Nagard,Caddy, Hagger and Khan. Avakayan, especially, was dangerous with the ball and against HorrisHill found himself on a hat trick after someunerringly accurate pace bowling. Le Nagard wasan industrious newbie to the game who showedgreat spirit and fight even in a lost cause. Caddyand Khan shared the keeper's gloves and provedadmirable in the role. Hagger has a future in thesport once he turns his eye to ball coordinationinto confident punches of willow on leather.Others such as Kuanyshev ma, Van Heusden,Burn, Preston mi,Wallace and Horton ma allplayed their parts and contributed to a veryenjoyable season. Good effort all round.

20/20 Trip to Surrey vKent at the Oval CricketGroundThe 20/20 cricket trip to watch Surrey play againstKent at the Oval was brilliant fun. This was my firstever cricket trip and I hope to go to many more.I loved watching the créme de la créme cricketersplaying and see how to really hit a six! Theatmosphere and the buzz of a packed ground wasawesome! I and the other boys learnt so much andwe were all really inspired by the action andexperiences gained. Firsts like this are ones whichyou will always remember. My favourite moment ofthe trip was watching a professional batsman playthe famous Dilshan scoop!Thank you to Mr Guestand MrTidd for taking us.

Tirado (FormVI)

Under 9B CricketThe boys started the term with excitement and anticipation. The lack of fixtures and subsequentcancellations left us with only 3 fixtures for the term which is never enough to have a fair crack of thewhip. We never got going but with a few more games I feel a win was just round the corner. We camevery close in an exciting game at Ludgrove. They scored 71 and we fell just short with 62. It was a game

the boys took a lot of confidence from after a heavydefeat to Bishopsgate a few weeks earlier. Manyweeks past before we played our final game, our firstat home, against Horris Hill. We were hit hard bychicken pox but we managed to get a team outhowever we didn't really do ourselves justice andlost heavily. Our concentration was not on thegame and all the boys would agree we should havedone a lot better. Stand out performances thisseason would include 25 scored by Dawson andBhardwaj at Ludgrove and Guest-Gornall’s bowlingwhich was accurate and hard to pick up by theopposition all term. The team has enjoyed trainingand practising and I hope they go into next year withthe same attitude and enjoyment for the sport.

20/20 Trip toHampshire v Essexat the Rose BowlCricket GroundThe first of two trips to watch live professionalcricket meant a road trip to the Rose Bowl,Southampton to see Hampshire play Essex. The20/20 match was great fun with lots of 4’s and 6’sbeing hit! It was terrific for the boys to study howthe professionals hit the ball so far as well as seethe energy that this popular form of cricket hasbrought into the game. Hopefully it served to in-spire the boys as they stepped back out onto ourown cricket fields!

Fathers Match - 1st XISelect versus Fathers XI(with some staff!)

This was tremendous fun.The Fathers XI, expertlycaptained by Mr Hopton had first use of the balland set about serving up a concoction of rathergenerous bowling combined with the odd wickettaking delivery! Some late lusty blows fromMalhameand Kim saw the boys reach a competitive total of91. In reply, the Fathers lost wickets at regularintervals before scrambling their way to within twoof victory, thus giving the boys their secondsuccessive victory in the annual contest. The gamewas played in marvellous spirit. The boys and Iappreciate the efforts of the Fathers who were ableto attend and take to the field! We lookforward to another competitive outing next year!

Mothers and Sons TennisDespite an unwelcome spattering of rain whichmade the courts a bit slippery and the balls a littlewoolly, the mothers and sons tennis competitionwas a great success and a lot of fun. Full marks mustbe given to MrsArthur,Mrs Lamb,Mrs Cemlyn-Jones,Mrs Senior, Mrs Dyachenko and Mrs Hawkey, forbraving the elements and playing some highlycompetitive matches with such good humour andskill.Mrs Cemlyn-Jones and Hawkey were crownedas rightful champions, seeing as they were unde-feated; and the runners up, perhaps surprisinglygiven the hard-fought nature of the Dyachenko'splay, was Miss De-Mestre and Hopton mi. Manythanks to all involved, it is very much hoped thatwe might see you again next year!

AthleticsTwo district champions, three national finalists, five district placings.Overall victories in four out of five matches.

SeniorsVs. Hall Grove lost,Vs. Bishopsgate lost,Vs.Woodcote lost,Vs. St.Andrew’s Pangbourne lostVs.Papplewick drawn.

This was always going to be a tough season for the seniors as we were not blessed with a particularlystrong group. However, to their credit they improved significantly over the season and there weresome notable performances from the team captain Beckwith-Moore, who remained unbeaten allseason in the hurdles and went to the nationals. Hawkey also ran beautifully in the 800m and Efemuairecorded some good times in 100m races.

JuniorsVs. Hall Grove won,Vs. Bishopsgate won,Vs.Woodcote lost,Vs. St.Andrew’s Pangbourne wonVs.Papplewick won.

But for a very poor day at the office againstWoodcote this would have been a sublime season. As itwas, the Under 11s were hugely successful and led in their efforts by Hinchliffe who was imperious allseason, winning the district athletics in the hurdles (12.50s) and also qualifying for the nationals in the1500m. Something we think was last achieved 18 years ago. Lewis ma jumped beautifully and was a handysprinter in partnership with Hopton mi and Jackson ma won the district championship in an astonishingrun, setting a new school record (2.38.03s) only for it to be beaten in the last competition of the season.

Under 10Vs. Hall Grove won,Vs. Bishopsgate won,Vs.Woodcote lost, ,Vs. St.Andrew’s Pangbourne won,Vs.Papplewick won.

A superb season from the Under 10s was led from the front by Lewis mi and Boscawen, the formerremaining unbeaten in the 600m and the latter breaking two school records in the 100m and 200m.Motala-Evans, Berridge and Field mi also showed much promise for the future

Declamation 2015We were extremely fortunate this year to have thefinals of the Declamation judged by Mr Barber, former Headmaster of Ludgrove. It was wonderfulthat the boys were able to provide such animpressive and entertaining evening of memory, oratory, and performance. Particularly accom-plished, I thought, and perhaps unlucky not to claimfirst prize, were Davies and Crewe-Read mi whospoke with real clarity, measure, and variation. Butthere was no denying that Jackson ma and Delikatnyiwere worthy winners. Both performed flawlessly, giving real weight to their readings, especiallyDelikatnyi, whose performance of LordTennyson'sUlysses was genuinely electrifying and will go downas one of the great Declamation performances, anda measure by which to judge future years.

TennisRacquet to ball, ball to racquet, the Sunningdalestrings fizzing with strength and skill. And for themost part, they have! Up until our final fixtureagainst Ludgrove, our Senior and Junior pairshave been almost invincible. The Seniors won alltheir engagements and the Juniors won them allbut one: a fiercely contested match against HallGrove where they eventually went down 4-5.The teams have been fairly consistent withBeckwith Moore and Hopton ma as the firstsenior pair, followed by Hawkey and Russell, andeither Maldonado ma and Dyachenko orGavrilov and Preston ma.The juniors have beenlead by Hopton mi and Senior ma, with DeCarlos and Maldonado mi as the second pair, and Le Nagard and Lewis ma or Buxton andSenior mi as the third pairing. For the most partour serving and base-line play was solid: wetended to aim to wear the opposition downfrom the back, as generally we were less assuredat the net. With all systems firing, perhaps wegrew complacent, maybe we were guilty ofresting on our laurels, or perhaps it was the factthat Mr Smith-Bingham knew our game insideout from previous years, but against Ludgrovewe were convincingly out-maneuvered and outplayed. This hard loss aside, the team should bepretty proud of itself for beating some teamsfrom much larger schools.Well played all!

MusicThe life of the Music department has continued on with its usual energy this term, and we have achieveda great deal in terms of performance and exam results in addition to the day to day work that goes onin the classroom. We had an Informal Concert on May 28th which was well attended and the standard ofperformance by all the soloists was of a high level. We are pleased that the concerts are now streamedlive online so any parents who are not able to make the concert can watch from home. Following LongLeave the focus was on the Summer Concert on June 27th which was a fantastic evening of musicfollowing on from theArt Exhibition in the Sports Hall. All the ensembles that meet weekly had a chanceto play their pieces:The woodwind group, String Group,Brass Duo, and the Band, and it was the first timeour Training Choir sang in public, with the Chapel Choir concluding the concert. There were someexcellent solos and centre stage were our Leavers Hopton ma and Malhame who played and sang withconfidence and skill way beyond what we would normally expect of boys of their age. Both these boyshave achieved an exceptional amount this year and we wish them well in their next schools and hope theycontinue to progress as they have been with us.

We have had 17 entries for music exams this term, includingTrinity Drum kit and Guitar exams, and wewere very pleased that Hopton ma scored a merit in his grade 8 piano at the end of last term. The Choirhave continued to work hard, singing at every Sunday Chapel service.

Thanks must go to all our peripatetic staff who are such a lovely team of people to work with and giveso much time and effort to encourage the boys. There will be some staff changes this term: we are sadthat Mrs Pakenham (piano and singing) ,Mrs Frost (piano) and Mr Bryant (drum kit) are moving to otherposts, and I will be off to pastures new in my new post at a school in Malvern in September.A very bigthank you to all who have supported the work of the Music in the school since I have been here, and tothe boys for their efforts and hard work. It has been a pleasure to be part of Sunningdale, and I have lotsof very fond memories to treasure.

Leavers 2015

The Leavers had three weeks packed with activities after Common Entrance. They went to France for afew days where they enjoyed sand yachting along Omaha Beach. Back in England they had a tour ofSandhurst Military Academy, jumped on board Concorde at the Brooklands museum, built rafts onhorseshoe lake and competed in a scrap challenge at school resulting in a kart race on Charlie Brown'sfield. The leavers supper in the cricket pavilion on the last night of term was spent reminiscing about theiryears at Sunningdale and brought tears to many.We will miss them hugely.
