I am grateful to the professors and lecturers (with many years of experience in the maritime industry) for providing me with valuable shipping insights. All of us had a chance to go for a semester of exchange in Oslo, Norway. The school has given many learning opportunities as well, such as the (1) Singapore-Sino Undergraduate Exchange programme, which I went to Beijing and Harbin, to understand the Chinese education system, (2) Keppel Subic Shipyard internship in the Philippines, and (3) the MPA Global Internship Programme in Denmark with Norden Shipping Singapore.  The perks of being an undergraduate in the Maritime Studies programme are aplenty. There are many opportunities for personal development too, through interactions with our lecturers and networking at the industry visits and talks, organized by the CEE Club and the Maritime Business Society. These events are strongly supported by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the maritime industry. Therefore, if you wish to have a dynamic and fun-filled school life, the Maritime Studies programme is definitely for you. TAY KAIXU FREDDIE Maritime Studies Year 4 (2014)

Why MAritiME StUdiES?

The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) was one of the pioneering three engineering schools when the university first started as Nanyang Technological Institute in 1982, offering the Bachelor of Engineering programme in Civil Engineering. The Bachelor of Engineering programme in Environmental Engineering first began in 2003.

The School launched the Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Maritime Studies in July 2004. The Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Maritime Studies with Business Major was introduced in August 2008.

The programme focuses primarily on tertiary education in shipping, business, management, and maritime science and technology, to build up the expertise of the local shipping industry as well as on working towards establishing Singapore as a centre of excellence for shipping business, research and development.

The BSc degree in Maritime Studies and the BSc degree in Maritime Studies with Business Major are conducted jointly by Nanyang Technological University and BI Norwegian Business School, Norway. These programmes are supported by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). BI is one of the largest business schools in Norway and in Europe. It has 6 campuses with the main one located in Oslo. BI was the first Norwegian institution to receive the EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System) accreditation.

NTU has been at the forefront of teaching, research and consulting in the areas of business and technology. With support from the College of Engineering, Nanyang Business School; and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, students enrolled in these programmes will complete courses in various disciplines, thereby developing different skills in a holistic and comprehensive learning environment.

MPA and the maritime industry have identified having excellent human resources to be the key to Singapore’s further development as a global maritime centre. MPA also provides an Endowed Professorship (Shipping Management) in NTU. The Maritime Studies programmes provide high level and high value education for professionals in shipping and related business. The programmes produce graduates who are well versed with the maritime industry and strong in business knowledge. They will be the future leaders in the global maritime industry.

CUrriCULAThe Maritime Studies curricula aim to provide students with both depth and breadth. The programme structure is flexible and broad-based. Students will complete one semester in the third year of their studies at BI. The curriculum also includes Industrial Immersion where students will be attached to organizations in the shipping and related industries.
