aGricuLtureWorld wide populations are increasing and economies are booming; producing an increasing demand for top quality food, produced by sustainable methods. Agriculture is likely to play a key role in the production of biomass and biofuel to help reduce CO2 emissions and counteract global warming.

Dedicated and skilled professionals are needed to grow crops, look after animals and to manage production, processing and distribution to the point of sale. The individuals who will be responsible for future changes and developments in British agricultural practice will be graduates with a sound understanding of the industry as well as technical and practical expertise. The agricultural industry is relying on a workforce that is getting older, but has many good opportunities. new entrants will bring a fresh new impetus to the agricultural and ancillary industries.

resources

135 hectares of the College estate are devoted to farming practices and production. The presence of these commercial enterprises make a vital contribution to the teaching of realistic farming practices and gives students valuable ‘hands on’ experience. Modern farming practices must be sensitive to the need to manage threatened wildlife habitats. Conservation is now an integral part of the College farming practice and of agricultural studies. in 1996 the College farm achieved Support Farm Status of LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming). Recently the College farm has entered the Higher Level Stewardship Scheme (HLS) which enhances the environmental aspects of farms.

the agricultural industry has undergone dramatic changes in recent years. as well as producing food for the uK and for export, farmers are increasingly becoming more environmentally aware. “organic”, “traceability”, “food miles” and “local” are important concepts for food production today.

cropsThe main crops grown are winter wheat, winter barley, oilseed rape, and beans on a five year rotational basis. Set-a-side is on fixed designated areas of land. A number of cereal varieties are grown demonstrating the production of malting and feed barley together with milling and feed wheat. Winter beans or spring peas are grown as a break crop depending on the fields. The arable unit is part of the Assured Combinable Crops Scheme.

pig unit The Pig Unit consists of 90 sows, with all progeny sold as bacon. The pig herd also belongs to the ABM Accreditation Scheme (Assured British Meat). A new 24-place farrowing house with environmental control was opened in 2004 and a new weaner house in 2006.

sheep unitThe College runs a small commercial flock of north County Mules and Mule x Suffolk ewes. The flock lambs in March (lambs are sired by high-index Suffolk rams) with the progeny sold off grass in June/July as prime lamb.

suckler beef unit The herd consists of Pedigree Red Poll cows. Their offspring are marketed as either breeding stock or through the Rare Breeds Meat Marketing Scheme. The cattle are all recorded using Signet Beefbreeder Services.

Both the sheep and beef units belong to the FABBL Accreditation Scheme (Farm Approved British Beef and Lamb).

dairy A link has been established with Terling Hall to ensure that all the needs of dairy husbandry and associated modules, including practical calf tasks and milking classes, are met. The Terling Herd consists of approximately 500 pedigree Holstein-Friesian cows. These are managed on a three times a day milking system. Feeding is based on the TMR system using forages produced on the farm and pre-mixed ingredients.

Business ManaGeMentWrittle College’s comprehensive Business Management provision offers a range of courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The Business Management team are actively involved in delivering a Management Development Framework for the whole College, affording the team the opportunity to focus on current management issues as they develop.

Today’s managers need to keep one step ahead of the rapid changes in the business environment. The wide ranging skills possessed by well-trained managers are in high demand across all commercial, service and not-for-profit organisations. Successful managers are equipped with people management and communication skills, a good grasp of financial planning techniques, the ability to manage change and a sound understanding of marketing and product development.

The College offers a wide range of business services, which attract employers from far and wide for conferences, courses and seminars. These close links with businesses allow students access to a wide range of materials for visits, case studies and applied project work. Students use a range of dedicated business and accounting software for lectures and projects.

Writtle College works with a number of professional bodies such as the institute of Management, the Chartered institute of Purchasing and Supply and the Chartered institute of Marketing. These links enrich the learning environment and study opportunities for all our management students.

resources

A recently resourced business management suite of rooms are the central location for management studies. The interactive boards and internet access in the business suite brings the world of industry and commerce into the learning and teaching environment. Current management issues can be discussed as they develop. Supply chain and marketing scenarios can be demonstrated with the use of technology as well as visits to the physical sites.

research activity

Business Management research projects have been working closely with local businesses to investigate consumer behaviour and develop markets, to improve business strategies and enhance performance management. Work has been conducted nationally to develop and implement the balanced scorecard as a focus for strategy and performance measurement.

Research and consultancy is also ongoing in the areas of rural business development and entrepreneurial activity, market research, supply chain relationships, international trade, business strategy and performance management. This activity is closely linked to the work of the College’s Centre for Environment and Rural Affairs (CERA).

One particular study examined best practice in building trust in food supply chains. Another project is looking at institutional economics in agricultural transition in international situations. Collaboration with international partners in Ukraine, Spain, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Sri Lanka is yielding academic exchanges and conference activity.

conservation and environMent in recent years there has been a growing awareness of the potential environmental problems associated with land use. The conservation of rural landscapes and ecosystems are now an integral part of rural management. The Conservation and Environment Scheme has been developed in close association with countryside bodies and employers and as a result has a focus on sector relevance, resulting in a highly contextualised programme of study. Students will develop a broad understanding of the ecological principles required for effective management of our wild flora and fauna. Combined with a sound scientific underpinning students will gain hands-on experience in the techniques of biological surveying, habitat management, collecting, analysing, and interpreting data for the conservation and sustainable management of our natural environment. Historically, food production has been the main focus of land use. However, with the advent of food surpluses and a greater understanding of the environmental effects of modern agricultural and industrial practices, the countryside needs managers able to make decisions which balance commercial acumen and environmental discernment.

resources

The College’s 220 hectare estate has been the focus of continuing environmental work which reflects the growing interest in areas of countryside management. This work is carried out in association with students, both as part of practical coursework and as voluntary members of the College conservation group - the ‘Green Machine’.

Wildflower meadows have been created, orchids preserved and there is an ongoing strategy to increase and improve woodland habitats, including a plantation of rare Black Poplar (Populus nigra). There are a wide variety of habitats ranging from wetland to chalk grassland. The conservation effort continues around the commercial farmland, which is included in the Higher Level Scheme. As an integral part of the experience offered on rural management and conservation courses, students practice traditional countryside management techniques.

The conservation and stewardship areas form the base for staff and student research projects, looking at the bio-diversity, flora and fauna of the area.

centre for environment and rural affairs (cera)

One of the Centres of innovation at Writtle College, CERA delivers sustainable rural development through project management, research, consultancy and training. CERA supports research linked to the College’s environmental courses, as well as serving as a conduit for obtaining and facilitating work on a regional, national and international level. CERA’s work feeds directly into the rural agenda, giving students and staff opportunities to interact with the real world at all levels. For further information, visit www.cera.org.uk

sustainaBLe foodDuring recent years the general public has developed an increased awareness and knowledge of the food that they eat. Partly this is in response to a plethora of television programmes about the source of many of our foodstuffs (traceability), but also more individuals are showing an interest in what happens to food before it reaches the plate. Coupled with an improved knowledge of the content of food and the effect of diet on health (typified by the adoption of terms such as ‘globesity’), opportunities to work within the food industry are increasing rapidly.

in response to this improved awareness and in acknowledgement of the environmental issues caused by transporting food around the globe, the ‘local food’ business has grown. Whilst the supermarket and the global food market will continue to dominate (and maintain the need for a well-qualified employee), there are increasing opportunities for those seeking employment within food-based Small-Medium Enterprises.

The Food industry as a whole is multi-faceted, covering primary producers, food analysts, packaging & processing technologists, marketing specialists, regulatory bodies and those with a specific interest in aspects of food culture. Of course, we all like our food; the opportunities for well-qualified individuals to enter the food industry as a profession are becoming more widespread as interest and awareness improves.

90 schooL of sustainabLe environments

“In my job I enjoy making decisions about the business and seeing their result (good or bad) and learning from it. I advise you to make the most of your time at college both socially and academically. If you put the work in it can bring about some great opportunities for the future. Try to get a range of experiences in the industry by working on different types of farms, also take on positions of responsibility and join clubs such as the Young Farmers.”

“The most memorable event was of course the graduation ceremony. It was so nice to see the smiles as all of us graduated and I was even more pleased at having got a First Class degree and scoring the highest ever marks in the course. I wasn’t looking for a big university in a big city. I was looking for a College that took pride in being personalised, was multicultural and had a good faculty. To me Writtle is a hidden Gem.”

“At College I was able to look at a habitat to create an understanding of its ecology and how certain management practices can affect the ecological unit. Since College I have put forward habitat management proposals on a reserve, basing them on my knowledge gained from my studies. Eventually I would like to go on to be site manager for the RSPB and be involved in the strategic issues involved in reserve management.”
