What is a violin? The violin is a type of string instrument,

played by rubbing across the strings with a “bow”.

It is about a foot and a half long and is typically made of wood. The strings are usually made of metal.

The bow is also made of wood, but its strings are usually tightly strung horse hair. They are rubbed with hardened tree sap (rosin) so that they make a nice sound when rubbed across the violin's strings.

Bowed Strings Family

There are three other major bowed string instruments that are almost identical to each other, save for their sizes: the viola, the cello, and the double bass, with the double bass being at the biggest at around six feet tall.

The bigger the instrument, the deeper the sound. Bowed strings from smallest to biggest

Playing the Violin To play, a violinist presses

his or her fingers against the fingerboard (the black part around the top of the violin) while rubbing the bow's hairs across the violin strings. Which note this creates depends upon where the fingers are being pressed.

The violin plays in the treble clef, meaning its notes are high. It is the only instrument in the bowed strings family that plays in the treble clef.

Compare the violin's playing rangeto that of the piano's

Violin Applications The violin is one of the

most versatile of all instruments. It can be used in genres like folk, classical, rock, and more.

And the weird black box to the left is playing Spring “Largo” from Vivaldi's famous “The Four Seasons”!

This beautiful cover of Let It Go shows off the violin's versatility
