Learning at your Museum Calling all classrooms! The Royal BC Museum and HSBC want you to take advantage of Your Museum’s unique learning environment. Thanks to the HSBC, K-5 school groups can visit for only $10 per class. Experience docent guided, curriculum-based and interactive programs. Book your group early to secure your spot! Maximum 30 students unless otherwise noted. Program times are flexible and we may be able to accommodate special requests. DECEMBER 4 – 21, 2012 Helmcken Family Christmas Grades K–2 In the 1880s, Dr Helmcken’s family would have been getting ready for Christmas celebrations, including some typical Victorian traditions. How did they decorate? What did they eat? What gifts did they give? Students will also visit St Ann’s Schoolhouse. JANUARY 22 – APRIL 26, 2013 Fins/Feathers/Furs Grades K–1 Introduce students to the great diversity of animals in BC and compare characteristics of some of the major groups including mammals, birds, fish, insects and other invertebrates. Curriculum Connections: Life Science, Earth and Space Science Tue 1 – 2:15 pm | Thur 10:30 – 11:45 am Maximum 25 students Wolves Grades K–2 Discover how wolves adapt to their environment, how they communicate and their importance to the First Nations of BC. Curriculum Connections: Life Science, Earth and Space Science, Process of Science, Dance Tue 1 – 2:15 pm | Thur 10:30 – 11:45 am Maximum 25 students This Old Town Grades 2–3 “Time Travel” back 100 years to a small town in BC. Using a map, find your way around Old Town to the movie theatre, the livery, the pharmacy and the train station. Using material from our collections and archives, discover how communities met the needs of their residents and how they have changed over time. Curriculum Connections: Social Studies Tue & Thur 10:30 – 11:45 am Living & Learning a Century Ago Grades 2–3 Look at a child’s work and ‘play’ a century ago. Explore household activities and objects as students learn what chores they would have been expected to do. How similar are they to those in modern life? Held in Helmcken House and St Ann’s Schoolhouse. Curriculum Connections: Social Studies Tue & Thur 10:30 – 11:45 am Limited wheelchair and stroller access. NEW! Stones, Bones & Pit House Homes: BC’s Ancient Underground Grade 4 Before hardware stores and shopping malls, First Peoples made tools to produce everything they needed. What materials did they use? What objects were made? How did they make them? Follow the clues from objects unearthed during BC’s archeological digs to this creative and innovative time. Curriculum Connections: Social Studies Wed & Thur 10:15 – 11:45 am Our Changing Climate Grade 4 Introduce students to the causes and consequences of climate change. Look at weather forecasting, weather maps and clouds. Past and present climates of BC are examined as well as human contributions and possible solutions to climate change. Curriculum Connections: Earth and Space Science Tue 10:15 – 11:45 am Space Invaders: Alien Adventures in our own Backyard Grade 4 Journey through the wet and wild habitats of our province to explore new species and their effect on our ecological balance. Aliens (no, not that kind) are among us … in the ocean, in our estuaries and in our forests. Curriculum Connections: Life Science Tue 10:15 – 11:45 am Simon Fraser: Explorer and Fur-Trader Grades 4–5 Simon Fraser, BC’s ‘founding father’, is best known for his daring exploration of the river that bears his name. Explore a variety of artifacts that were traded between the Europeans and First Peoples, and learn the importance of bartering during that period. Curriculum Connections: Social Studies Wed & Thur 10:15 – 11:45 am Self-Guided Visits September 2012 through June 2013 There is no charge for self-guided school visits of the permanent galleries or Wildlife Photographer of the Year. In order to be eligible for complimentary admission, BC schools must pre-book with a minimum of two business days notice, and have a minimum chaperone ratio of 1 adult for every 5 students (grades K – 8) and 1 adult for every 10 students (grades 9 – 12). $14.40 for additional adults. Self-conducted visits to Race to the End of the Earth will be subject to an admission fee of $9.00 per student, adult supervisors are free at the chaperone ratios noted above. $19.44 for additional accompanying adults. Capacity Limits Large numbers of visitors at one time can hamper the learning experience. For this reason, we reserve the right to restrict the number of booked groups allowed per day. Please contact the museum well in advance of your visit to ensure that we can accommodate you. Teacher Previews We welcome teachers to preview the exhibitions and galleries. Shackleton’s Antarctic Adventure Opening May, 2013

The extraordinary true story of polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton’s now-legendary 1914-1916 British Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. While never accomplishing its goal of the first crossing of the Antarctic, this expedition has become a testament to heroism and human endurance, with all 28 men surviving nearly two years in the barren, frigid Antarctic.
