Welcome

There is an impressive drive for improvement underpinned by a relentless focus on the core business of improving learning and teachingNACE

Page 3: School Prospectus

We would like to extend a warm welcome to all.

It’s official – Woolwich Polytechnic is an Outstanding school! In our most recent Ofsted report we were graded as ‘Outstanding’ – which is the highest possible grade. This means that our school provides an education which rivals the very best schools in the country. Furthermore, we gained the top grade in 21 out of 24 categories – an achievement of which we are extremely proud.

Shortly before Ofsted we also gained the NACE Challenge award, (National Association for Able Children in Education) which recognises the outstanding work that teachers do with our Gifted and Talented children.

Our exam results have risen consistently over the past four years and we are once again well above the national averages. Indeed, in 2010 and 2011 we were the most improved boys’ school in the country and in the top 1% of all schools. Through early entries in

2012 we have already beaten our previous records. However, we never rest on our laurels and we are doing everything to ensure that this year’s results will be even better than before. In September 2011 we were granted our own Sixth Form and we are delighted to see more of our students securing places in the top universities throughout the country. We are very fortunate to have so many dedicated teaching and associate staff who go the extra mile to ensure that all our boys achieve their potential. Whatever your interest in the school you will always be welcome to visit – contact us and see what makes us so special.

Lastly, we would like to take this opportunity to share with you some very exciting news – we are in the process of being one of the first schools in the country to gain the Exceptional Schools Award, so watch this space!

Partners for success

Being a prefect gives you a sense of meaning and responsibility. It makes you proud

M Boyer, Year 11 Prefect

We believe the success of Woolwich Polytechnic School is based on the thriving partnership between parents and carers, pupils, staff and governors. We encourage parents and carers to take an active role in their sons’ studies and often invite them into school to share subject knowledge with them. Our award-winning Learning Gateway enables

the entire school community to access information and to share our common vision of excellence. This sharing of information gives our stakeholders ownership of the school.

We hold many events that bring our entire school community together to share in your son’s success.

Lessons for success

The curriculum has the breadth and flexibility to ensure that every student has the pathway and support required to make significant progress

Ofsted

We offer an exciting, innovative and personalised curriculum that changes in response to national requirements. All stages of our curriculum are designed to inspire and challenge students at all levels of their education. Our technology college status stresses the importance of information and communication skills in underpinning and empowering your son’s independent learning, which will put him at the forefront of technology. In our most recent Ofsted inspection it was noted that we have “an unusually high proportion of Advanced Skills

Teachers and Lead Practitioners” who encourage creative, responsive and effective approaches to learning and teaching.

Academic, personal, social and leadership skills are developed through our varied curriculum that includes artistic, spiritual, musical and sporting opportunities.

More detailed information on the curriculum can be found in the information leaflet enclosed.

Our spacious and well maintained sports field and astro-turf are used daily in lessons, in addition to inter-school competitions and extra-curricular activities. Your son will be encouraged to take part in the various sporting activities on offer during breakfast, lunch and after school which include: football, basketball, cricket, rugby, table tennis, badminton and athletics. In addition, if your son loves to be creative, he may want to be part of the school choir or band or tread the boards in our annual school production. Walking around the school, you will notice the outstanding talent our Art department has unleashed in our

boys, so if your son wants to be the next Picasso or Michelangelo, he will want to join the Art Club and have his work proudly displayed in our corridors. Our extra curricular activities stretch further than the school grounds – into the local community and beyond. Our school is the first school in the country to receive a Gold Award for its Work Related Learning activities. We have close links with business, both local and national, which supports our Enterprise activities. Moreover, our excellent Work Experience programme helps your son with his career choice and prepares him for the transition from education into the world of work.

Beyond the curriculum

Page 10: School Prospectus

Our Sixth Form is co-educational, meaning that girls as well as boys can benefit from an education of the absolute highest standards.

We are a sixth form that prides itself on high expectations which had led to series of outstanding results and an ever-increasing number of students gaining places in the top universities.

Sixth Form students benefit from two modern study areas, both with state-of-the-art IT facilities. We encourage and support students to develop independence in their study skills and in their general attitude to life. Our outstanding pastoral care system extends to Sixth Form students and is the foundation upon which their success is built upon.
