Kerni is a small village of 18,000 inhabitants in the mountains of Pakistan side

of Kashmir. This village is situated in a very difficult terrain near Indian

border. Life is not very easy up there in these mountains. There are very few

medical and educational facilities available in this area. Most of the people

in this area are small farmers and laborers.

Government Boys Secondary School is the only outlet in this area provid-

ing education facility up to grade ten. The building of this school was dam-

aged in 2005 earthquake and even after eight years it was not repaired.

Teachers were conducting classes in open ground. In snowfall or rain it

was diff icult to open the school for studies.

When DM-AID decided to support this school, the school building was in

dangerous condition. Over the past few years, hundreds of students left

this school due to unavailability of basic facilities. Upon the request of

head master, the KDF team visited this school and conducted its initial

assessment of most urgent needs. DM-AID immediately decided to sup-

port this school and transfer funds to KDF for reconstruction of the school.

The basic reconstruction and renovation work has recently been complet-

ed. The details are as under:

Community MobilizationKDF team involved the local community in the school improvement process and

conducted various sessions with the community members. The community not only

showed interest in sending their children to school but they also decided to

contribute resources for the development of school in their area. Free labor, wood,stone and some other resources were contributed by local community.

Features of New Building: Construction of five new class rooms is completed.

Teachers Chairs & mats for the students have been provided.

Principals office and staff room has been constructed.
