House Groups and Points

Joll HouseJoll House (and also Joll Road) was named after John Joll.At age six John Joll emigrated with his parents from Calstock (Cornwall, England) to New Plymouth. The family was soon farming in Pukahu (on the outskirts of Havelock North – Scott’s Strawberry Farm is part of the old house) and then around the Joll Road area.  John Joll’s son, J.H (Henry) Joll, donated land for the present bowling green and Croquet Lawn Club. The colour green is associated with the land.

Campbell HouseCampbell House was named after General Colin Campbell, Commander in Chief of the British Forces in India and also after Hugh Campbell, a local land owner. Mr Hugh Campbell was a very successful farmer in the mid 1800’s, eventually owning several large properties around Havelock North. Around 1911 he gave eight acres of land for Iona College, a Presbyterian girls school also based in the village. The colour gold for Campbell House comes from the medals the General wore.

Duart HouseDuart House was named after a colonial homestead on Duart Road. This historic wooden house was built for Allan and Hannah McLean. Allan was a Scot who took up land on the banks of the Tuki Tuki River and accordingly became known as ‘Tuki’ McLean to distinguish him from other McLeans in Hawke’s Bay. He married Hannah, the eldest daughter of John and Margaret Chambers of Te Mata. The colour blue is linked with the colour of the Scottish National Flag.

Chambers HouseChambers House (and also Chambers Street) was named after John Chambers. The Chambers family were one of the first families to settle in this area and owned most of the Havelock North Primary School zone.  John Chambers and two of his sons gave 242 acres in Trust to the people of Havelock North for a park and recreation ground in 1927.  This is Te Mata Reserve around Te Mata Peak.  The colour red is associated with vineyards.

All children at HNPS are allocated a house. Children do activities with their whanau groups which are made up of children from their house. For all school sport events, such as cross country, athletics, swimming sports, triathlons and duathlons children earn points for their house and are asked to wear house colours for the event.

HNPS Sports Flash & Blue Star awards

At HNPS, we have many ways to celebrate the success of our children in many areas including sport.

One way that we celebrate contribution and achievement in sport is by presenting children with a Sports Flash.

The Sports Flash can be achieved by collecting points for participating in sports events, representing the school at interschool events or in our top teams to name a few.

Sports Flash points can be collected by children from Year 4-6. Children are to record their points and then upon reaching the set number of points to receive a flash (30 points) children submit their flash criteria to their teacher. This will then be checked and signed off by management and in return the child will receive their Sports Flash in a whole school assembly. The Sport Flash is one of 4 flashes children can work towards here at HNPS.

Here at HNPS we also have a Blue Star. This is a new award and is for those who have already gained their Sports Flash. The Blue Star is worth 20 more points on top of the 30 earnt for the Sports Flash. This Star gives our consistent sports child something to work towards once they have received their flash. As with the flash, children need to keep a record of their points, submit their completed criteria to their teacher. This will then be checked and signed off by management and in return the child will receive their Sports Flash in a whole school assembly.
