Breakfast (HR) • You are expected to pick up and eat breakfast

in the cafeteria each mornings prior to coming into homeroom.

• Food is not allowed to leave the cafeteria unless you have a late bus.

• You must first get breakfast- no dropping off your book bag or materials- and then come to class after you have eaten. There is NO a returning to the cafeteria once you come into homeroom.

Morning Homeroom• You are expected to read a book

or work on homework.

• You may study for an upcoming test!

• You are not allowed to talk or socialize during this time.

• If you need to use your personal device to complete an assignment or study, you must get teacher approval prior to using your device.

• You are expected to visit your locker and get needed materials for the day.

TARDIES/ABSENCES (HR) • If you enter class after 9:20, you must have a slip

signed by the front office. This is whether you have an excused or unexcused tardy.

• EXCEPTION: If your bus is late it will be announced. You then do not need a pass.

• Student Tardy Policy- Students are expected to be on time for school and all classes. Failure to do so will result in consequences: 1st-3rd tardy = warning 4th tardy= Referral (Administrative Detention) 5th tardy= Referral (Saturday School) 6th tardy= Referral (Admin. Detention & Sat. School) 7th tardy= Referral (suspension of school activities) 8th tardy= Referral (ISS/OSS)

Daily Schedule• There are 7 class periods on a daily schedule

• 01 – ELT (your homeroom teacher’s name will appear here, but you will be told where to report each day)

• 02 – 1st Academic Class

• 03 – 2nd Academic Class

• 04 – Connections A

• 05 – Connections B

• 06 – 3rd Academic Class

• 07 – 4th Academic Class

Absences• You are expected to be at school every day. However, illness

and emergencies happen.

• If you are absent, you must give your homeroom teacher a note or have a parent email within 2 days.

• Absent notes must have… your name student id number homeroom teacher name.

• Notes must explain why you were out… sick, family death, out of town for _______.

• You will have one day for each day absent to make up your missed work.

• All work from an absence will show up as an ABS (calculated as a zero) and until you make up time expires at which time your grade will change to an NTI (Not turned in = calculated as a zero)

HELP DAY• Every Wednesday at 8:15 is help day. All teachers

are available on this day from 8:15 until 8:50. Students can visit any teacher during this time.

• This time is to be used for make up work, make up tests/quizzes/projects, help and tutoring, or for homework or class questions.

• This time is not for….. Playing Hanging Out Socializing

• If any of the above are observed you will be asked to leave.

• If you need more help- speak to your teacher about an additional time/day.

HALL BEHAVIOR• All students are to walk in a straight line. There is no

turning to your friends to talk. No talking to other students from other classes.

• Hall transitions are SILENT

• Students are to stay in a straight line and face forward at all times.

• You do not stop for water or the restroom without permission from your teacher.

• You do not touch, write upon, or rip any thing posted on the walls– be respectful.

• Students from our hall should not be on the other 6th grade halls or short cuts (short halls) without teacher permission (Exception- Health)

LOCKERS

• You will have two opportunities to use your locker- in the morning and afternoon.

• It is YOUR responsibility to learn how to open your locker. You will be given a combination and it is your job to keep it safe.

• You will NOT be allowed to go to your locker during any class times.

• Any locker usage outside the designated times will result in consequences.

• Lockers are the property of Berkmar Middle School and may be inspected and searched by school officials.

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)

• BMS is a BYOD school– you may bring your laptop, tablets, smartphones, or other devices to school for Instructional Purposes only.

• Devices are not used for any other reason.

• Student who use a device without teacher permission or for an instructional reason are subject to disciplinary action.

• Students are responsible for their own devices– the school is not responsible for any lost, stolen, or damaged devices.

• To avoid interfering with instruction, parents/guardians should not call or text their students during the school day.

School Property• Every student is issued an agenda book.

Students are expected to have their agenda with them at school daily.

• No student should permit another student to use his/her agenda or to deface or damage his/her book.

• The cost to replace an agenda is $5.00 and can be purchased in the Media Center.

• When using a school textbook or computer/tablet, students are to treat the materials with care.

• Any destruction of any school property will result in an administrative referral.

FOOD, WATER, GUM

• There is no food in any class. No chips, no muffins- NO FOOD. Food is not supposed to leave the lunchroom. If this is observed, you will receive consequences.

• Water bottles are allowed in class. Only clear water is allowed in the school/ outside the cafeteria.

• Gum is strictly prohibited at Berkmar Middle School.

DRESS CODE • * ALL requirements can be found on the GCPS website

• Headwear is prohibited– includes but not limited to hats, hoods, bandanas, wave caps, sweatbands, sunglasses, or any other head covering. This includes wearing your ear buds through your clothing.

• No halter tops, strapless tops, tops with spaghetti straps, low cut tops, see-through tops, or backless tops. Shirts that expose any portion of the waist, hips, midriff, ribs, or undergarments are not allowed. Boys are not allowed to wear sleeveless shirts.

• Shorts and Skirts must be mid-thigh length or longer. Slits cannot be above the mid-thigh. No underwear is allowed to show (including boys). No rips or holes above the knee. No leggings, spandex pants, see through tights, or yoga pants should be worn alone with an appropriate outer garment.

• Trench coats and blankets are not allowed in school.

• Proper footwear must be worn at all times (no house shoes)

• No clothing shall depict words or symbols that depict violence, drugs, alcohol, sex, illegal gang affiliation or other illegal activity expressed or implied.

• No chains, no spiked bracelets or neckwear, no oversized belt buckles.

• Any student dress/appearance not specifically stated which the faculty or staff deems distracting will not be permitted.

• If you break any of these rules, you will first be warned and then you will be subject to disciplinary action.

SCHOOL-WIDE DISCIPLINE PLAN• Assertive Discipline Plan- school-wide discipline

plan.

• Rules: Follow directions the first time asked by any

GCPS employee. Come to class on time and prepared to learnKeep hands, feet, and objects to yourself. Raise your hand and wait to be recognized

before speakingFollow all GCPS rules and expectations at all

times.

School Consequences

• 1st offense= Warning

• 2nd offense= Silent Lunch or Time out

• 3rd offense= Teacher Detention and Parent Contact

• 4th offense= Administrative Referral and Parent Contact

• Severe Clause- Students who threaten the safety or well-being of others will be immediately removed from the classroom by an administrator.

Code of Conduct• Fighting- the use of force or violence is strictly

prohibited. Causing or attempting to cause physical injury or behave in a way as could reasonably cause bodily injury to a person is prohibited.

• If you engage in any behavior which could result in physical harm of another person is prohibited (even if you are “playing”)

• Bullying or making fun of another person is subject disciplinary action and possible disciplinary panel. If a student feels he/she is being harassed by another should report it immediately.

• Cheating or plagiarism (copying) are acts of academic dishonesty and are subject to disciplinary action.

End of Day• Students are to report back to homeroom for

the end of the day dismissal.

• Students will stack chairs in the back of the room and pick up any large pieces of paper off the floor.

• Students are to sit/stand at their desk and maintain silence while announcements are given.

• Students will listen for their bus to be called and leave only when their bus load has been dismissed.

• Any student who leaves without their bus being called will be considered AWOL.
