The dawn of a new school year is an exciting time. Kids may not want to say goodbye to days spent lounging by the pool, but such disappoint-ment is often tempered by the prospect of returning to school with friends.
For parents, getting kids ready for a new school year is about more than updating their wardrobe or organ-izing carpools with fellow parents. Reacclimating kids to the routine of school after a relaxing summer is a significant undertaking, and the following are a handful of ways for parents to get a head start as the school year draws closer.
• Establish a routine over the last few weeks of sum-mer. Summer vacations typically lack the structure of the school year, and that lack of structure can help kids unwind and make the most of the freedom that summer vacation provides. But as summer starts to wind down, parents can begin to rein-troduce some structure into their kids’ lives to make the transition back to school go more smoothly. Plan morn-ing activities so kids can readjust to waking up early each day. In addition, serve breakfast, lunch and dinner at the same time you typical-ly serve it during the school year so kids’ bodies can
begin to readjust as well.• Take kids along when
shopping for school supplies. If you plan to buy your child a new computer or other supplies for the upcoming school year, take him or her along on your shopping trips. Kids who get to choose
their supplies might be more excited about returning to school than those youngsters who are given what they need without offering their input.
• Monitor or assign sum-mer reading. Many students are given summer reading
lists to keep their minds sharp over the summer and prepare them for upcoming course work. Parents should monitor kids’ progress on such reading lists and even discuss the books with their kids when possible. Read the books along with them if
you think it will help en-gage them. If kids were not assigned summer reading lists at the end of the school year, assign your own books, rewarding kids when they finish a new book. Kids who read throughout the summer may be more likely to start the school year off on the right foot than those who don’t crack a book all sum-mer.
• Encourage kids to sign up for extracurricular activities. Many school-aged athletes get a head start on the new school year by trying out for sports teams. Such tryouts often commence a week or two before a school year is scheduled to begin, and this can help kids ease their way back into the school year. But even nonathletes can begin pursuing extracurricu-lar activities before the first school bell of the year rings. Theater programs may begin auditions or encourage inter-ested youngsters to attend orientation meetings before the dawn of the school year, and such sessions can be a great and pressure-free way for kids to ready themselves for a new school year.
The arrival of a new school year can be both exciting and daunting. But parents can help their youngsters read-just to school in various ways after a relaxing summer.
How to help kids transition back to the classroom
As a new school year draws nearer, parents can employ several strategies to help their kids readjust to the rigors of the classroom.
Preparing for a new school year often involves providing updated physical health information to the school administration.
Some physical examinations need to be conducted annually, while others may only need updating at certain intervals, such as when kids transition from ele-mentary school to middle school or middle school to high school. Updated physical forms also may be required at the start of a sports season.
Health screenings are intended to detect problems that may inter-fere with learning. Physical exams may indicate issues that can hamper progress or shed light on undiagnosed problems that may require further assessment and necessitate customized learning plans to help students succeed. Physical exams are also a way to ensure students’ immunizations are up to date.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, physical
exams typically are completed by students’ primary care providers. Some school districts offer free or low-cost health assessments through school providers as well.
Students who will be traveling for school may be required to meet the health requirements of their destination country. For ex-ample, medical students admitted to a Canadian university may be required to get a medical exam, according to the Government of Canada.
Visiting the doctor, nurse practi-tioner or a school-provided med-ical professional may not make school-aged children too happy. To make the process go smoothly, consider these suggestions.
• Work with physicians who have access to electronic health records. EHRs are secure tech-nology that provides easy access to vaccination records, health history, appointment reminders, and even prescription information. Some providers even make it pos-
sible for patients to directly access their health information through a secure login, helping save time.
•Make appointments during school hours. After-school appoint-ments are peak times for pediatric offices and medical clinics. Sign students out of school early to visit the doctor for medical exams. The staff likely will be less harried, and you can spend more time asking questions and completing forms. Schools may not count the absence if a doctor’s note is provided.
• Don’t forget the forms. Bring the right paperwork so that the staff can fill out what is necessary for the school, camp or sports league.
• Know your insurance guide-lines. Physical exams may be part of routine well visits. Insurance companies institute their own policies regarding how frequently physicals can be conducted (usu-ally annually). Be sure to schedule the appointment accordingly.

School is not always easy, and some students struggle as they transition from grade to grade. As students get older, some who may have experienced smooth sailing as youngsters may find they need some extra help grasping the material as course work be-comes more complicated.
Those who need some extra clarification and reinforce-ment may first turn to their parents. But parents may not be familiar with certain subjects or capable of explain-ing certain concepts in terms kids can understand. In such situations, tutors can prove to be valuable resources to get kids back on the right academ-ic track.
One-on-one attention from a tutor can benefit all types of learners. Students who discov-er new-found success under the guidance of a tutor may
have more self-confidence in the classroom. Parents won-dering if a tutor can help their children may want to consider the following indicators that students may need tutors.
• Consistently falling grades: Tutors may be necessary for students whose grades are gradually on the decline. First, speak with your child’s teachers, who may recom-mend tutors that specialize in certain subjects.
• Confusion in and out of the classroom: Some kids struggle to grasp certain concepts, and such confusion can sometimes be remedied with the kind of intense study available in tutoring sessions.
• Low confidence: Some kids’ confidence wanes when their grades suffer. Kids whose grades have been on the decline may feel a sense of defeat even before they take
a test or work on an assign-ment. Tutors can help restore confidence by creating small victories that slowly build up to larger successes.
• Indifference to course-work: No student will be cap-tivated by every subject he or she studies, but there should be some subjects that stu-dents find engaging. Students battling indifference toward their course work may benefit from a dynamic tutor who can present subject matter in new ways and revive students’ interest.
Students who are struggling in the classroom may need some extra help outside the classroom, and many tutors are adept at reviving interest in subjects kids are studying at school. Some teachers may recommend certain tutors, while others may do some tutoring work themselves.
Signs a tutor might
be necessary
Back to school season can be as expensive for parents as it is exciting for students. Once the initial letdown of the end of summer vacation wears off, many kids are excited to return to school, where they can see their friends, study their favorite subjects and participate in extracurricular activities.
Parents of school-aged youngsters may share in that excitement while also knowing that back to school season can stretch their budgets. One of the ways to salvage those budgets is to save on school supplies. For-tunately, there are several ways parents can do just that.
• Be patient. Shopping early can save shoppers money in many instances, but parents may benefit by exercising patience when it comes to buying school supplies for their children. Teachers often give students lists of supplies they will need for each class, and parents who wait to receive such lists can avoid spending money on items their kids won’t need. Even if you wait it out, you may be able to get a head start, as some teachers may post supply lists on school websites, while others might email lists
to parents before back to school season hits full swing.
• Take inventory. If you have more than one child, chances are you already have lots of school supplies around the house. Dust off kids’ backpacks and study areas from last
school year to determine which supplies you need to buy and which you already have. Going forward, encourage kids to store their supplies in a prede-termined area once the school year ends, as this will make next year’s inventory that much easi-
er to examine and assess.• Spend more now to save
later. While inexpensive supplies can be hard to resist, such items likely won’t withstand the test of time, forcing you to spend time and money each year buying replacement supplies. Paying
more now for certain items, including stronger backpacks and more highly rated calcu-lators, may end up saving you money in the long run, even if the initial pill is somewhat tough to swallow.
• Use technology to your advantage. Department stores and businesses that sell school supplies, such as pharmacies and office stores, may or may not discount too many items once back to school season hits full swing. But savvy parents can still find deals by using tech-nology to their advantage when shopping for school supplies. Download apps like Retail-MeNot to your smartphone and enable its updates so your phone essentially notifies you of any discounts the moment you walk into a given store. If you don’t receive any updates, search for discounts via the app or the Internet as you shop. Chances are strong that there are deals to be had, even if you don’t learn of the deals until you arrive at the store.
School supplies can be expen-sive, but parents can employ several strategies to save on school supplies now and in the future.

How to make school lunch healthier
The benefits of a healthy diet are clear and well document-ed. In addition to providing the nutrients a growing body needs, consuming a balanced diet helps children maintain a healthy weight. Obesity continues to be a growing problem among school-aged children and can contribute to the onset of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, and many other adverse medical conditions.
Children attending school will eat at least one meal away from home each day. A healthy lunch provides sound nutrition to give students energy to do well in school and for the rest of the day. Children who do not eat a good lunch may have difficulty concentrating, while others may feel sluggish or tired.
As part of the 2010 Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, the United States National School Lunch Program was revised to guarantee healthy, nutritionally sound choices, as established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, for lunch. America’s school menus were altered to be healthier than ever, including more fruits and vegetables while limiting calories. Despite some controversy through the years, including some students saying the smaller portions and food choices aren’t always satisfying, states suffering from high child obesity rates have seen marked improvements.
Canada is one of the few lead-ing industrialized countries that does not have a national nutrition strategy to implement healthy school lunches. It’s estimated that only 10 to 15 percent of Canadian children have access to school meals. These meals are not provided by a well-fund-ed national program, but by a patchwork of individual volunteer efforts, some provincial gov-ernment funding and corporate donations.
Whether students purchase lunch from school or bring lunch from home, there are ways to guarantee a more diverse offer-ing and better nutrition. Here are some guidelines to follow.
• Offer nutrient-dense foods. Foods should contribute to the daily recommended amounts of protein, iron, calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin C. Provide a selection of foods, such as lean protein, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, that will give children the nutrients they need. Nutri-ent-dense foods also help kids feel fuller, longer.
• Limit fat intake. Avoid foods that do not get their fat from poly-unsaturated and monounsaturat-ed fats. Saturated fats can lead to
obesity and clogged arteries. The American Heart Association rec-ommends kids get no more than 25 to 35 percent of their calories from fat. Fish, nuts and olives are healthy fat sources.
• Let kids choose some of their food. Allow kids to pick some of the healthy foods they will be eat-ing. Giving kids a say in their di-ets will make them more likely to enjoy their lunches and cut back on snack foods. Eating meals regularly will keep energy levels up during school and make kids less likely to reach for unhealthy snacks to fill hunger gaps.
• Make small changes that add up. Switching from white bread to whole grain breads, and opting for low-fat dairy products instead of full-fat dairy products can make a world of difference. Kids
may not notice a change in tex-ture or flavor, and many of kids’ favorite foods, such as chicken nuggets, pizza and macaroni and cheese, can be made with health-ier ingredients.
• Remember, beverages count, too. Giving children a healthy lunch and then packing a sug-ar-filled, high-calorie drink ne-gates your efforts. Calories from beverages can quickly add up. Water is always the best option for a healthy drink. Low-fat milk and real fruit juice consumed in moderation also make healthy alternatives to sugary beverages.
Offering healthy school lunches is an important step to raising healthy kids. New guidelines and offerings make it easier for kids to get the nutrition they need for their growing bodies.
This school lunch can be made more healthy by swapping the white bread for whole grain bread and choosing low-fat milk over a sugary juice pouch.
Warning signs
of childhood
vision troubles
Adults know when they are beginning to experience trouble with their vision. In such instanc-es, men and women will book appointments with their eye doc-tors to determine what’s causing their problems. But whether it’s a fear or eyeglasses or simply feeling their symptoms are normal, kids might be hesitant to tell their parents about any vi-sion problems they’re having. As a result, parents must learn to recognize certain warning signs that indicate their children are experiencing vision problems.
Vision problems in youngsters can be especially problematic, as many of the lessons kids learn in school still begin on a chalkboard. The following are some potential indicators that kids might be dealing with vision problems that require medical attention.
• Reading habits: Vision problems may be most notice-able when kids are reading. As youngsters learn to read, they might use their fingers to keep their place while they figure out the pronunciation of certain words. But kids eventually grow out of that habit. Kids who are still doing so long after they have learned to read may be having trouble seeing words on the page. In addition, kids who pull their reading materials very close to their eyes may be strug-gling to see the words.
• Viewing habits: Peculiar viewing habits may also be indicative of poor vision. Kids who sit too close to the television may be struggling to see what’s on as opposed to just being overexcited to see their favorite shows. Kids who prefer to watch programs on tablets they can hold as opposed to televisions
may also make that choice because it’s easier for them to see on their tablets than on the television. In such instances, ask why they prefer tablets to tele-vision. When kids watch TV, ask them to move further away from the television. If they complain moving back makes it hard to see, book an appointment with an eye doctor.
• Eye rubbing: Many kids, and even adults, rub their eyes when they are feeling fatigued. But kids who seem to rub their eyes frequently and at times of the day when they should not be tired may be experiencing vision troubles and feeling frustrated that they cannot see very well.
• Eye activity: Some kids begin to close one eye when reading, watching television or attempt-ing to read signs. That may be indicative of a refractive vision disorder, in which the eye strug-gles to focus, or refract, light correctly on the retina. Such problems can often be corrected with eyeglasses or contact lens-es, but some refractive disorders may require surgery.
• Squinting: Kids who squint a lot may be finding it difficult to focus on words on a chalkboard or even television programs. Squinting may also be brought on by a corneal abrasion. Par-ents who notice their youngsters are squinting should consult the child’s eye doctor to determine the cause of the problem.
Vision problems can be espe-cially harmful to children, who rely on their vision to perform their schoolwork. Parents who learn to recognize the various warning signs of vision troubles can nip problems in the bud before they have too great an impact on youngsters.
