Building a Brand New Classroom During our January visit to Kafefwe Community School, we discovered that the teachers and the pupils had some very exciting news! One of the new government trained teachers, Aubrey, had supported the community to approach Zambia’s Constituency Development Fund (CDF), which provides communities with money for projects that help to reduce poverty. With Aubrey’s help, Kafefwe community put together a funding application for the school at the end of last year and submitted it to the CDF and then waited, with their fingers tightly crossed! In January, they found out that they had been successful and the school has now been given 10,000,000zmk (this is the equivalent of £1300) to help them build a proper school classroom. The community is so excited that they have started digging the foundations for the new building already and they are hoping to have a completed classroom by August 2012. Hopefully, as Kafefwe Community School continues to expand, this will be the first of many new school classrooms for the school. We’re hoping to be able to send you a lot more photos of the progress of this project, so watch this space! WINTER 2012 New Teachers! Recently, Kafefwe Community School has been lucky enough to receive not one, but three, qualified teachers to help their school. The teacher now in charge of the school is Aubrey, a government certified teacher, who is really passionate about helping to take the school forward. Aubrey is really excited about the Schools of Good Hope Project and when asked what he thought about the programme, he said: “The world is not as it was twenty years ago. Fields and cattle are not enough and when people are counted it will be those with education that stand above the rest. By helping with our school you are investing in people’s lives and their futures.” Schools of Good Hope Newsletter Registered charity number: 1140353 (incorporating 1093039)

Latest News So what has been going on in the Schools of Good Hope Project so far? Read on in this

section to find out!

Training Begins! The New Year at Kafefwe Community School started with the in-role school teachers and community members getting their first teacher training session! Getting to Kafefwe to deliver the training was eventful in itself: it is surrounded by rivers and streams and due to it being the rainy season, many of the rivers had burst their banks. Vincent, who is delivering the training for PEPAIDS, had to get off the motorbike and wade across, Indiana Jones style! The training session focused on how to plan and structure lessons, learning styles and modelling (not the catwalk kind!). On the day both in-role teachers and community members turned out in force and in total 20 people attended the session. Vincent delivered the next training session on Literacy in early February and he will be going back to the school later in the month to observe the lessons being taught by the in role teachers and see how much of the training they have taken on board. We’re really hopeful that we’ll be seeing big improvements in the teachers’ skills and we’ll report how they’re getting on in the next newsletter.

This year the rainy season in Zambia started very late: usually the rains arrive in mid-November, but this year it didn’t start raining properly till January. Understandably everyone was very worried, as this lack of rain really affects the crops that are grown in Zambia. A lot of the children who attend the community schools we work with come from rural areas, and their families rely heavily on farming for their own food and for income and so we’re crossing our fingers and hoping there’ll be rain for the next few months at least.

Something to Write On… During the training sessions we were really struck by the poor quality of the blackboard that the teachers are using at Kafefwe and we decided that we should do something about it. Kafefwe has only one blackboard (which is actually a cork board painted black) and the teachers cannot teach lessons at the same time, as the board has to be moved from one classroom to another. The existing board is also in bad shape – it was falling apart and literally crumbling before our eyes. We asked Loxford if we could use some of the money they have fundraised to buy some blackboards for Kafefwe School and the answer was yes! Blackboards cost around 50,000zmk each (about £7) and so we’re going to buy the school two for them to use – hopefully it will make a difference!

Stop Press! A Fundraising Challenge! In December, PEPAIDS embarked on a fundraising challenge - our Great Big Christmas Card campaign - to raise money for our Schools of Good Hope Project. The challenge was part of a competition run by GlobalGiving UK: if we raised £2000 in 30 days and from 50 unique donors, we’d gain a permanent spot on the GlobalGiving fundraising website. At PEPAIDS we like to aim high, so we decided to set ourselves a target of raising £10,000 in 30 days! Sounds impossible? Well, with immense support, and donations from all around the world, we managed to raise just over £12,000! We ended up winning the whole competition and so we then won a further £2000 bonus prize from Global Giving! Thanks to everyone who supported the campaign – we have now been able to fund the running of the Schools of Good Hope project for a whole year.

Celebrity Snapshot! When Helen was invited to the very swanky Red Magazine’s Hot Women Awards 2011 in November, she decided to take full advantage of the situation and took along our Great Big Christmas Card! Celebrities like Louise Redknapp, DJs Jo Whiley and Lauren Laverne and fashionista Brix Smith-Start all posed with the card and pledged their support for our campaign. They even plugged us on Twitter! Go Helen!

Great Testimonies from Our Teacher Training Project Although our teacher training project only started in January, we have already had some glowing feedback from the seven schools involved. For instance, the head teacher from Matimbia Community School said: “I have seen the ZATEC [Government] training course – this [PEPAIDS] course covers the same important content but in delivery is much more enjoyable…You have brought out the best in people by engaging them.” It’s amazing that already the project is making a huge difference!

Helping Vulnerable Children In November 2011, SAPEP, PEPAIDS’ Zambian partner charity, ran an outdoor camp for orphans and vulnerable children in Monze and Mazabuka. Over 60 children attended and spent three days getting involved in outdoor activities, teambuilding games and competitions and they also learn new skills as well! These children rarely get the time to relax and have fun and so the outdoor camp was a great opportunity for them. The camp was so successful that SAPEP is now looking for funding to run further camps in 2012!

PEPAIDS is a UK based charity whose mission is to alleviate poverty and HIV/AIDS in Africa and to raise awareness,

internationally, of the issues surrounding HIV/AIDS.

In Zambia, we work with our local partner organization SAPEP, based in the Southern Province of Zambia, in the districts of Monze

and Mazabuka. Together we work to support young people and their communities to fight poverty and HIV/AIDS.

Our Schools of Good Hope partnership programme aims to give

some of the most vulnerable children the chance to access free education and also enables Zambian community schools to have better resources—such as books, toys and writing materials for

their pupils. The support provided by schools like yours is amazing and really makes a huge difference to your partner school so,

THANK YOU!!!

Kafefwe Community School has come a long way: the community is so passionate about education that they have come together and turned the dream of having a community school into a reality. However, Kafefwe School is still desperately lacking a range of resources that prevent the school from providing the best education possible for their pupils. Your school’s support will go towards making sure that Kafefwe Community School pupils will have:

• Exercise books, pens, pencils, crayons and other stationary • Toys and games • Clothes that fit the pupils and shoes on their feet

But the support that you provide doesn’t stop there. The pupils and teachers at Kafefwe School have bigger dreams, such as the school having proper facilities.

• Kafefwe School needs some extra support to build their first proper classroom, so that some pupils can move out of the makeshift building they are learning in. They also desperately need a water point and more toilets for the school.

So as you can see, all your support is really important and will make a huge difference to all the pupils at Kafefwe School!
