Introduction
This report outlines all changes to the Schools Online Thesaurus (ScOT) between July 2011 and June 2012. Selected ScOT project activities are also highlighted, including website changes and introduction of multi-lingual reference structures. ScOT is owned and managed by Education Services Australia Ltd.

Highlights
All changes over the preceding 12 months are detailed in separate sections that make up the bulk of this report. In addition to this document, users may generate reports of new, modified or deprecated concepts over a defined period (see ‘Website’) below.
Vocabulary alignment ScOTv6.7 is the result of alignment with significant education resource collections. Curriculum frameworks are themselves a significant source of warrant for ScOT updates.
Australian Curriculum
ScOTv6.7 aligns closely with the Australian Curriculum while retaining reference structures and word stock built up over 10 years of consultation with the school sector and via application to many substantial content projects. In turn, ScOT has been applied to the Australian Curriculum itself and continues to be the mandated subject vocabulary for tagging machine-readable descriptions of the Australian Curriculum.
By assigning ScOT to curriculum resources, inferences between specific curriculum elements and resources are enabled. Significant resource projects that apply ScOT concepts include Supporting the Australian Curriculum On-Line (SACOL) project and Schools Catalogue Information Service (SCIS).
Resource projects
New concepts and modifications often arise from cataloguer feedback. ScOT continues to develop as it is exposed to significant content projects including SACOL and SCIS. Reports from metadata creation and retrieval systems are used to identify cataloguer feedback and end-user search behaviour. These content projects are an important source of user and literary warrant and form strong cases for additional concepts and other modification to ScOT.
Language alignment Initially to support alignment of metadata for National Asian Languages and Studies in Schools Program (NALSSP), ScOTv6.7 includes expanded reference structures and translations of labels into non-English languages. This represents a substantial opportunity for ScOT to support users who are learning or who have a background in languages other than English.
Online environments can be designed or adapted to take advantage of standardised language encoding and character support. The example concept “Algebra” (en) includes labels for the NALSSP priority language of Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese and Korean, as well as Arabic, Māori and some European languages:

ScOTv6.7 represents early steps towards multi-lingual thesaurus structure. Productive integration of the new language facets within education resource collections and systems is integral to an ongoing case for further development in this direction.
ESA is especially grateful to expert contributors who have helped to develop these preliminary reference structures. The language experts were sourced from following institutions: The International Study Program at Mount Clear College, Vic (Chinese); School of International Studies, Flinders University (Indonesian); Melbourne Centre for Japanese Language Education, Monash University (Japanese) and the School of International Studies, University of New South Wales (Korean). Rolling out changes to ScOT resulting from these projects is a work in progress that will continue into 2012-2013.

Appendix
Proportion of terms by level A common issue for thesaurus management is “how many levels” should be in the hierarchy. This, together with the number of ‘top terms’ together indicate the depth and breadth of concepts covered. Thesaurus dimensions should match the breadth, specificity and complexity of concepts located in user content. User interface issues are also a consideration; the ten ScOT Top Terms are a good starting point for top-down browsing both in the public thesaurus interface and within vertical navigation or breadcrumb systems1. Targets for hierarchy depth are sometimes arbitrarily assigned in thesaurus management guidelines (e.g. “between 5 and 7”). An alternative approach is to manage and report the proportion of terms at each level.

Non-preferred term rates Non-preferred terms2 (also called entry terms or see references) increase entry to concepts by managing ambiguity between synonymous or near-synonymous concepts. In v6.7, the proportion of non-preferred terms continues to increase and is accounted for mainly by addition of new non-preferred terms. v5.0 v6.0 v6.3 v6.4 v.6.5 v6.6 6.7 Top Terms 8 10 10 10 10 10 10
