This is the third year that Perth Concert Hall has presented its celebration of the life and music of Franz Schubert in the company of great musicians. This year, the emphasis is very much on getting back to the spirit of Schubert’s own ‘Schubertiads.’ These music parties were often fairly informal gatherings featuring a mixture of music serious and light, song and sonata, quartet, quintet, octet… whatever was possible with the musicians available. (There was also food, games, dancing, talking and drinking until the early hours of the morning – these you may provide for yourself!)

So most of our concerts this year do something similar - you might have song in the first half and chamber music in the second; or a soloist first then an ensemble.

Mixing things up like this gives a stronger and more authentic sense of Schubert’s musical experience than our modern concert programmes– and it also means that we can include some of those pieces which are less often heard. For instance, on Saturday night we will have a distinguished horn player and clarinettist performing in the Octet, and they have agreed to play the solo obbligato parts in two of Schubert’s greatest songs too - Der Hirt auf dem Felsen and Auf dem Strom.

The musical proceedings are led by three Perth regulars, Paul Lewis, Llŷr Williams and Alexander Janiczek, creating a close-knit sense of ensemble for the whole occasion. I hope you can join us!

Perth’s third Schubertiad gets underway with a sharply contrasted pair of masterworks: a dramatic and turbulent Sonata and the genial Trout Quintet. Any of Schubert’s late string quartets makes for a fantastic lunchtime concert - and the extra bonus of hearing it in a concert like this which lasts just one hour is that both performers and audience can really get the most out of just the one big piece.Gannochy Auditorium | £12; concessions £10 (unreserved seating)

Schubert’s Octet was composed in a white heat of creativity - friends that visited him reported that he was distracted and distant, not at all the usual genial fellow they were used to. The music has moments of sheer uplifting delight, but plunges into deep abysses of despair; a dramatic and turbulent journey.

A special ensemble has been created for this performance, led by Alexander Janiczek. As we have wonderful singers also in attendance we have paired them up with some of the players for some of Schubert’s songs for voice and instrument: the delightful Der Hirt auf dem Felsen (featuring Maximiliano Martin on clarinet) and the dramatic Auf dem Strom (featuring Stephen Stirling on horn).Gannochy Auditorium£25, £18, £12, £8; concessions £21.50, £15, £10

Paul Lewis has appeared at every Perth Schubertiad and we’re delighted to welcome him back both as soloist and as partner to the young tenor Allan Clayton in Schubert’s heartbreaking tale of lost love, Die Schöne Müllerin.

Lewis pairs this magnificent drama with piano music which reveals Schubert in more informal but no less great form. The Impromptus are a delight - as a set they offer rich contrast and variety of intensity and invention.
