Phonics Communication Activity

Overview- Below are summaries of what we will be covering this week, in the different areas of learning. At Nursery, these are ideas and themes, which we would cover, either at adult led group times or through the children’s play within our continuous provision. Literacy/ Communication & LanguageThis week, we will be focusing on the Chinese New Year story. We will support children to recall events from the story in detail. This week, we will also be finding out more about the Chinese tradition, we will be supporting children to use new vocabulary and to recall information.

Maths- Children begin by using language to describe length and height, e.g. the tree is tall, the pencil is short. When making direct comparisons, they may initially say something is bigger than something else. Encourage them to use more specific mathematical vocabulary relating to length (longer, shorter), height (taller, shorter), and breadth (wider, narrower). Linked to this week’s theme of Chinese NY, draw dragons of different length for children to measure. Phonics-Children are tuning into the sounds around them. To support access online phonics games. (www.Phonicsplay.co.uk) (www.phonicsbloom.com) Phonics 30 min lesson each day select Phase 1 or 2 games

RE: Gathering-This week, Nursery will be talking about the joys of gathering.

Understanding the World- People and Communities- Linked to this week’s story of the Chinese New Year, the children will be finding out about how the event is celebrated. Children will be supported to explore and find out more about different ways of life. Valentine’s Day is at the weekend, support children in talking about people they love. They may want to make a special card.

EAD-Children could try creating a beautiful Chinese blossom tree. This could be the front a card that they want to make for someone that they love (Valentine’s Day)

In this table, there are suggested adult led activities that you could complete with your child at home. At Nursery, we would be doing these activities during carpet

and group times. We would carry out the activity for around 20 minutes. We would then follow on the activity within children’s free play.

C&L MathsMon This week, we will be focusing on

The Chinese New Year story of the animals. Listen to the story "The Great Race: The Story of the Chinese Zodiac" by Dawn Caseyhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4WlzNrpUCs. Following the story, ask children what they can remember.

This week, we will be exploring length and height. To introduce this listen to the story Titch by Pat Hutchins https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgoihSunrfQing During your day support children to talk size where possible.

Tues Explore Chinese New Year traditions. Show children a selection of items which are used to celebrate Chinese new year. If you do not have these items at home, search ‘Chinese New Year celebrations’ on google. Talk to children about that they can see. Draw their 1attention to the different colour- red and gold, the Chinese dragons, the lanterns.

Show children a selection of everyday items, of different heights/lengths. Support children to describe and make direct comparisons. They may initially say something is bigger than something else. Encourage them to use more specific mathematical vocabulary relating to length (longer, shorter), height (taller, shorter), and breadth (wider, narrower)

Wed Enjoy one of your favourite stories together, possibly a story about love and family e.g. Guess how much I love you. After the story explain that there is another celebration coming up, Valentine’s day. Talk about who children love. Follow this on by completing a calm craft activity. Support children to make a special Chinese blossom tree piece of art for someone they love.

RE Gathering Show children the above RE image. Ask children questions about the picture

Q What can you see in the picture?Q Where are the people going to? Q What are the people doing?

Talk about how people are welcomed, as they gather in Church and how they listen to the Word of God.

Thur Remind the children that this week we have been finding out all about Chinese New Year. Today, children will find out more about how the NY

Remind children that this week we have been learning about length/height. Ask Children to make their bodies ‘tall’ and

is prepared for and celebrated. Show children the Chinese NY celebration picture PowerPoint. Talk to children about what they notice, talk about the colours and decorations. Then watch Cbeebies clip, Preparing for Chinese and Lunar New Yearhttps://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/watch/chinese-new-year Compare the video and the PP, what can the children recall.

‘short’. Using building resources, you have available (duplo blocks, plastic cups, cardboard boxes) Explore building tall and short towers. Explore measuring using objects, e.g. blocks. Measure pre-drawn dragons of different lengths. Support children to talk about the measurement ‘the dragon is 3 blocks long’.

Fri Watch Cbeebies clip, Celebrating Chinese and Lunar New Year. https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/watch/chinese-new-year Can children help to create an information poster all about Chinese New Year. Record children’s comments onto the poster. Prompt children by asking questions about the Zodiac story, the decorations, special colours and what they represent. As today is Chinese NY, why not celebrate with some food (noodles, crackers).

Ask children, do they know the names of the days of the week? Explain that this week there are two celebrations, on different days. Chinese NY on Friday and Valentine’s Day on Sunday. To help us to remember the order of the days of the week we are going to learn the days of the week song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXMofxtDPUQ
