RISK OF CONTACT WITH BATTERY ACID. BATTERY ACID IS A HIGHLY CORROSIVE SULFURIC ACID.

Ifitisnecessarytoremovethebatteryfromthevehicletochargeit,alwaysremovethe3.1 groundedterminalfirst.Makesurealloftheaccessoriesinthevehicleareofftopreventarcing.Besuretheareaaroundthebatteryiswellventilatedwhilethebatteryisbeingcharged.3.2 Cleanthebatteryterminalsbeforechargingthebattery.Duringcleaning,keepairborne3.3 corrosionfromcomingintocontactwithyoureyes,noseandmouth.Usebakingsodaandwatertoneutralizethebatteryacidandhelpeliminateairbornecorrosion.Donottouchyoureyes,noseormouth.Adddistilledwatertoeachcelluntilthebatteryacidreachesthelevelspecifiedbythe3.4 batterymanufacturer.Donotoverfill.Forabatterywithoutremovablecellcaps,suchasvalveregulatedleadacidbatteries(VRLA),carefullyfollowthemanufacturer’srecharginginstructions.Read,understandandfollowallinstructionsforthecharger,battery,vehicleandany3.5 equipmentusednearthebatteryandcharger.Studyallofthebatterymanufacturer’sspecificprecautionswhilechargingandrecommendedratesofcharge.Determinethevoltageofthebatterybyreferringtothevehicleowner’smanualand3.6 makesurethattheoutputvoltageselectorswitchissettothecorrectvoltage.Ifthechargerhasanadjustablechargerate,chargethebatteryinthelowestratefirst.Makesurethatthechargercableclipsmaketightconnections.3.7

Checkthepolarityofthebatteryposts.ThePOSITIVE(POS,P,+)batterypostusually7.1 hasalargerdiameterthantheNEGATIVE(NEG,N,-)post.Attachatleasta24-inch(61cm)long6-gauge(AWG)insulatedbatterycabletothe7.2 NEGATIVE(NEG,N,-)batterypost.ConnectthePOSITIVE(RED)chargercliptothePOSITIVE(POS,P,+)postofthe7.3 battery.PositionyourselfandthefreeendofthecableyoupreviouslyattachedtotheNEGATIVE7.4 (NEG,N,-)batterypostasfarawayfromthebatteryaspossible–thenconnecttheNEGATIVE(BLACK)chargercliptothefreeendofthecable.Donotfacethebatterywhenmakingthefinalconnection.Asstatedin7.4,faceaway7.5 fromthebatterywhenconnectingthenegativecliptothecable.ConnectchargerACsupplycordtoelectricaloutlet.7.6 Whendisconnectingthecharger,alwaysdosointhereverseorderoftheconnecting7.7 procedureandbreakthefirstconnectionwhileasfarawayfromthebatteryaspractical.Amarine(boat)batterymustberemovedandchargedonshore.Tochargeitonboard7.8 requiresequipmentspeciallydesignedformarineuse.

Thisbatterychargerisforuseonanominal120-voltcircuitand8.1 hasagroundedplugthatlooksliketheplugillustrated.Thechargermustbegroundedtoreducetheriskofelectricshock.Theplugmustbepluggedintoanoutletthatisproperlyinstalledandgroundedinaccordancewithalllocalcodesandordinances.Theplugpinsmustfitthereceptacle(outlet).Donotusewithanungroundedsystem.

AmmeterTheAmmeterindicatestheamountofcurrent,measuredinamps,thatisbeingdrawnbythebattery.Asabatterytakesonacharge,itdrawslesscurrentfromthecharger.Correspondingly,themeterwillshowlesscurrentbeingdrawnbythebattery.Whenthecurrentstopsdecreasing,thebatteryischarged.Thestartareaofthemeterindicatesahighrateofcurrentbeingdrawnfromthecharger.Whencrankinganengine,themeterneedlewillbeattheextremerightsideofthestartarea.The2ampchargeratemayindicatesomeactivityonthemeter,althoughthemeterdoesnothavetheresolutiontodisplaythislowrate.Forthe2ampchargerate,atrianglehasbeenprovided.Itsaccuracyhasbeencalibratedforusewithsmallbatteries.

Percent of Charge• Thepercentofchargescaleisintendedasavisualaidtohelpsimplifyreadingthestateofcharge.Itisscaledforusewiththe6,10,12,15or30ampchargerateonly.Forthe2ampchargerate,usethetriangle.Thepercentofchargeisbasedonthecurrentdrawnbythebattery.Forthisreason,accuracywillvarywiththesizeandbatterytype.Typicallya28amperehourgelcellbatterywilldrawlesscurrentattheendofthechargecyclethana140amperehourwetcellbattery.Thismeansthattheindicationforafullychargedlargebatterymaybeslightlylessthan100%.

Battery Type Switch Usethisswitchtosetthetypeofbatterytobecharged.

SLI• –TheseinitialsstandforStarting,LightingandIgnition,whicharethethreebasicfunctionswhichabatteryhastoperformonallnormalvehicles.Thisbatterytypeisusuallyusedincars,trucksandmotorcycles.Thesebatterieshaveventcapsandareoftenmarked“LowMaintenance”or“Maintenance-free”.Thistypeofbatteryisdesignedtodeliverquickburstsofenergy(suchasstartingengines)andhaveagreaterplatecount.Theplateswillalsobethinnerandhavesomewhatdifferentmaterialcomposition.MostMaintenanceFreeBatteriesareSLI,otherwiseknownasFlooded,RegularorStandardBatteries.Regularbatteriesshouldnotbeusedfordeepcycleapplications.Deep-Cycle• –Deep-cyclebatteriesareusuallymarkedas“Deep-Cycle”or“Marine”.Deep-cyclebatteriesareusuallylargerthantheothertypes.Thistypeofbatteryhaslessinstantenergybutsomewhatgreaterlong-termenergydeliverythanregularbatteries.Deepcyclebatterieshavethickerplatesandcansurviveanumberofdischargecycles.AGM• –TheAbsorbedGlassMatconstructionallowstheelectrolytetobesuspendedincloseproximitywiththeplate’sactivematerial.Intheory,thisenhancesboththedischargeandrechargeefficiency.Actually,theAGMbatteriesareavariantofSealedVRLA(valveregulatedleadacid)batteries.Popularusesincludehighperformanceenginestarting,powersports,deepcycle,solarandstoragebattery.AGMbatteriesaretypicallygooddeepcyclebatteries,andtheydeliverbestlifeperformanceifrechargedbeforethebatterydropsbelowa50percentcharge.IftheseAGMbatteriesarecompletelydischarged,thecyclelifewillbearound300cycles.ThisistrueofmostAGMbatteriesratedasdeepcyclebatteries.GEL• –TheGelCellissimilartotheAGMstylebecausetheelectrolyteissuspended,butdifferentbecausetechnicallytheAGMbatteryisstillconsideredtobeawetcell.TheelectrolyteinaGELcellhasasilicaadditivethatcausesittosetuporstiffen.Therechargevoltagesonthistypeofcellarelowerthantheotherstylesofleadacidbattery.Thisisprobablythemostsensitivecellintermsofadversereactionstoover-voltagecharging.GelBatteriesarebestusedinVERYDEEPcycleapplicationandmaylastabitlongerinhotweatherapplications.IftheincorrectbatterychargerisusedonaGelCellbattery,poorperformanceandprematurefailureiscertain.

Whenantimonyisknowntobeoneofthematerialsusedinthebattery’sconstruction,thatbatteryisconventional/lowmaintenancetype.

Somelowmaintenancebatterieshavearelativelysmoothtopwithout

anyapparentbatteryfillercaps.If,however,thebatterymanufacturer/distributorrecommendsperiodiccheckingoftheelectrolytelevelandprovidesaccesstothebatteryforwateradditions,thebatteryisprobablyaconventional/lowmaintenancetype.

2A Slow Charge Rate• –Intendedforchargingsmallbatteriessuchasthosecommonlyusedingardentractors,snowmobilesandmotorcycles.The2Aratecanbeusedtowarmortricklechargelargerbatteries.6A, 10A, 12A, 15A Fast and 30A Rapid Charge Rate• –Useforchargingautomotive,marineanddeep-cyclebatteries.Notintendedforindustrialapplications.Engine Start• –Providesadditionalampsforcrankinganenginewithaweakorrundownbattery.Alwaysuseincombinationwithabattery.

Voltage Selector Switch Usethisswitchtosetthechargertochargea6volt,12voltor24voltbattery.

LED IndicatorsFull Charge• –Whenlit,thisLEDindicatesthatthebatteryisfullychargedandthechargerhasstoppedchargingandswitchedtotheMaintainModeofoperation(Automaticchargersonly).Power On• –Whenlit,thisLEDindicatesthatthereisACpowersuppliedtothebatterycharger.Check Battery• –Whenlit,thisLEDindicatesthereissomethingwrongwiththebattery.ChecktheDCconnectionsforanimproperconnection;otherwisethebatterymaybebad.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS11.

Thisbatterychargermustbeproperlyassembledinaccordancewiththeassemblyinstructionsbeforeitisused.

OverviewConnectthebatteryfollowingtheprecautionslistedinSections6and7.1. Selecttheappropriatesettingsforyourbattery.2. ConnecttheACpowerfollowingtheprecautionslistedinSection8.3.

Automatic ChargingIfthechargerhasanAutomaticChargeMode,itcanperformanautomaticcharge.WhenanAutomaticChargeisperformed,thechargerswitchestotheMaintainMode(seebelow)automaticallyafterthebatteryischarged.Forabatterywithastartingvoltageunder1volt,usetheManualModefirsttopre-chargethebatteryforfiveminutestogetadditionalvoltageintothebatteryforthechargertoanalyze.

Manual ChargingIfthechargerdoesnothaveanAutomaticChargeMode,youwillbecharginginManualMode.Amanualchargerwillcontinuetochargeandwillnotshutoff.Youmustkeepavisualcheckontheammetertodeterminewhenthebatteryischarged.Besuretomonitorthechargingprocessandstopitwhenthebatteryischarged.Notdoingsomaycausedamagetoyourbatteryorresultinotherpropertydamageorpersonalinjury.
