OPTICAL QUALITYRequires Accurate Alignment

* Accurate microscopic observations-fields clearly defined over the entirearea-with the finest details resolved, demand precise alignment of the lenselements, as well as exact surface curves and spacing, determined by opticaltests. Each lens, after being mounted, is tested for alignment while rotating on alathe.

A point of light reflected from the rapidly revolving lens surface shows inaccu-racies in the lens, by moving as the lens is rotated. In a perfectly mountedlens, there is no motion of the point of light.

Many other tests, by Spencer scientists, insure that the traditional policy of"Optical Quality First", is maintained in every Spencer instrument. Examina-tion of a modern Spencer Microscope will show you many other reasons forits superior performance.

FOR A CLEAR UNDERSTANDING OF THEELECTROLYTIC - RESISTANCE PRINCIPLE

With this equipment the student can make allordinary measurements of electrolytic resistance. In addition, he can determine molecular conduc-tivity, the purity of water, dissociation constantsand the degree of dissociation, the basicity ofacids, dielectric constants, titration end-points,chemical constitution, etc. Professors also findit useful for some experimental work, though ad-vanced research requires more accurate equipmentsuch as the Grinnell Jones Bridge.

The Students' Slidewire is of the exposed wiretype, 40 cm. long and with 100-division scale, ac-curate to better than 1 division. Resistance is

approximately 30 ohms. Two switch-controlledend coils are adjusted to 4.5 times the resistanceof the slidewire.

The 4-dial box of 9999 ohms total suppliesresistance, and the buzzer provides bridge current. The 2000-ohm telephone receiver has ample sen-sitivity for detecting balance. The "U" typeconductivity cell has a constant adjustable overa wide range, to accommodate practically all solu-tions encountered in educational work. Its elec-trode area is approximately 1.4 sq. cm. and theplatinum weight is approximately 1.3 g.
