Safety in the Chemistry Laboratory Working with chemicals, even household
products, can be dangerous if not handled properly.
Before you work with these, you should understand the safety procedures.
Two systems used to Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
Material Safety Data Sheets This includes important information about a
chemical Physical and Chemical Properties How to handle, store and dispose the
chemical. It contains First Aid Procedures http://www.mallbaker.com/Default.asp http://www.coleparmer.com/catalog/Msds/11
482.htm
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System Informs workers about chemicals in three
ways Controlled products must have informative labels, in
both English and French on their containers Each Controlled products must have a Material
Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) Workers who handle chemicals must complete an
education program provided through their employer
